This has been nothing but a disaster for the British taxpayer. A few who were in a position to profit from they sale did so but the vast majority missed out. Since then bills have just gone up and up and despite switching numerous times the underlying price has increased year on year. Now I have just seen a news report that each household in the UK has had to pay an extra £6each 172 million to pay for the 11 suppliers who went bust last year, this is on top of our all ready inflated bills. Roll on the next election so we can take back control. Do you really think that the same investment in energy suppliers, BT, water suppliers etc etc would have been made by being funded by the tax payer?? Saint Maggie was right to privatise and also vastly curtail union power that was bringing the country to its knees. Incidentally were you around in the mid 70s and the Winter of Discontent? Yes I was, my dad was a miner and in those days they were poorly treated and poorly paid, we as a family lived on the breadline, rented a telly because we codnt afford one, no car, holidays were a week in torquay if we were lucky. That's why the miners went on strike for a better living and they were 100% right to do this. So bear this in mind next time you read some right wing shit in the daily mail

Something that Maggie finished when she came to power but got the full blame. But this isn’t the point is it as we were discussing the privatisation of public services that were unsustainable given the amount of modernisation that was needed. Bear this in mind next time you read some left wing shit in the Guardian. BTW I don’t read DM or DE. My go to online news paper is the Independent who report truth Without a left or right wing bias imo.

Your wrong on so many counts yes pits did close under labour but they were nearing the end of their life and had become unprofitable, thatcher closed pits for nothing other than spite. Good profitable pits but she was determined to wage a war on the miners that's why she gave the police massive pay rises and it still leaves a bitter taste today. Most miners I know are sensible level headed people and deep down they knew it was a fight they couldn't win but they had to make a stand for what's right. Most galling is we shut our pits and steel works and then had to import coal and steel from third world countries. Idiotic Imo we are still paying the price for thatchers regime today, in her quest to shorten the dole queue she moved them all on to sickness benefit a cynical move so she could claim ti get people off the dole, now we have whole families relying on benefits they don't know any different. My parents brought me up to pay my own way and not rely on handouts this is how it should be.

Absloutely correct and the reform of overstaffing all on final salary pension schemes funded by the taxpayer. Yeah, that’s why we all saw miners driving Bentleys & wearing Ra-Bans I was working for british coal in the 80's, and up at Selby there were some miners driving porches. There was pay inequality due to productivity bonuses, which were easy to get in Selby with seams you could drive a car to, but impossible in south wales where you had to crawl through a four foot damp tunnel.

For anyone interested there is an excellent book called “Private Island: why Britain now belongs to someone else” by James Meek which charts the privatisation of practically all of our state owned industries, the sale to foreign owners and the consequences this has had from increasing energy prices to the housing crisis.
It is very well written. A thoroughly depressing read (and quite frankly frightening) but a very important one.
For anyone on here saying privatisation was the right thing to do please read this book.

Brilliant idea 3P. Buy it back. For Billions, but hey, Jezza loves his cheque book. Unfortunately to buy it back is illegal under EU law...
