It is sometimes all about timing.
We were going through a massive downward spiral up to the point Lou arrived. For me I was 11 years old, so just starting really, and it's the start of all my memories of beginning to follow and love stoke.
That period of time with Lou was simply amazing for me. I don't think I'd be so passionate about my club if it hadn't of been for that period.
Loved it, loved the team, loved the atmosphere, loved the ground, loved the kits.
Happy birthday Lou

Remembering Peterborough away early in 91-92 and Vince Overson's debut. I thought then this is just the captain we need and he was Lou's best signing other than Stein. We were off and running and our club was picking itself off the floor. Thanks Lou and happy Birthday. Still doing good things for the city too.

Lou, Lou, skip to ma Lou Macari Macari’s Red army!
Still find myself singing these songs in the shower. Great days, great team, great atmosphere. Oh for the old Boothen End in the Macari era.
Foghorn, Stigger, Bertie, Vinny, Cranny, Rooster, Sandford, Ronnie, The Golden one, Johnny Butler, Regis and the puddle at fail park. I could go on. This was the era I fell in love with Stoke City
Happy Birthday Lou.

It was already hard enough for Stoke battling the glitz of Liverpool et al for the support of local school kids, imagine what it would’ve been like without the Lou years... Happy bday Lou

Warey's goal in the Autoglass Trophy.
Third division team in a Mickey Mouse tournament, but I can't think of many more iconic goals in our history.
Brings a lump to my throat everytime I see it. Started welling up as I typed this. Daft bugger.

swapped keith scott ( stoke city to Norwich ) for Mike Sheron ( Norwich to stoke city ) That was some deal ! was MON brought the deal to us. He wanted Keith Scott as managed him at Wycombe and Sheron still lived in the NW and was looking for a move away nearer to home,

Was many good times but how it was the best ever have no idea as 3rd tier football. I think it relates to the culture, mentality and sheer optimism that was present in Stoke on Trent at that time, in a period when the city and the football club had been on the skids for much of the previous decade. Football's football, it makes you feel good whether you play in the 1st tier of the 101st. For some, it's a crystalised moment in time that defines their experience of supporting Stoke and I'm not gonna sit here and take it away from them because it was the third tier. We set many a club record in that season too, that still stand.

We also set a record of our worst ever away spell of form , 8 straight defeats without a goal. Was a revival in form and mood and brought fans back, can't argue with that but comparing that to beating the top teams in the country and saying best ever is nonsense. I guess the past always looks better the further away it gets.

It's a personal preference I guess, I wasn't born yet so I can't relate. I just know plenty of the certain age will say their most enjoyable time watching Stoke was 91-93 under Macari as a default. I think there's an admission it wasn't the best quality as such within that.

You know your getting old yourself when you remember Lou Macari as a player aswell, cracking little player with a great left foot.My Stoke supporting days started during the Durban era but can honestly say the Macari era is still my favorite, better than the Premier League decade. The 92/3 season i was in my early 20's,single and lived for Stoke City.Managed to go every game during the title winning season, from Foghorn's late winner at Hartlepool to Stigger's late equaliser and un-deafeted record setting goal at Brighton.Loved every minute of it. One of my most treasured possessions is a picture of Lou holding my then 8 week old son,Liam, at Newcastle Town in a pre-season friendly in July 1995.Liam has himself become a massive Stokie and is proud to show the picture to his fellow Stoke mates. Thanks Lou for all my best memories from being a football fan.

Got us out of a huge rut and we started winning games again but we were still competing with the Stockports and Brentfords who more often than not got the better of us. Wasn't all huge crowds and electric atmospheres but some games were. We were pretty much where we are now when Macari left but with a squad that was a cert to struggle the next season. Our form end of the season was absolutely dire.

I didn't think I needed to qualify it by saying the comment was personal to me, because sometimes that sort of thing seems obvious. Happiness and pride aren't dependent on what league you play in or who the opposition are. I've seen enough comments on here over the years to know that there are quite a few people who feel the same about those days. There's no really viable explanation for it. It's just how it is.

People always romance the past though. We were a top team every season with a steel tight defence in the 70s if you believe all which of course we weren't. Were more a mid table to bottom half side in reality.

If I tried to make out they were a better team than we had in the Premier League years (well most of them anyway), then I'd be setting myself up for ridicule, and your 'nonsense' comment would be justified. I and I think those of a similar mind are just talking about how that Macari team made us feel. For me, it was the best feeling I've ever known as a Stoke supporter. I have no problem accepting that other people will feel that way about Waddo, Durban, Pulis or Hughes' teams.

Few raised eyebrows when Lou splashed the cash on Steino after an average loan spell. What followed though was a great time we had home or away watching the little fella!. Lou knew though didn't he and I thank him for that and all the good times. Happy birthday wee man.
