High energy teams like holland who press us into our own third are going to get a lot of joy from ball dwellers like stones and barkley. Especially if there isn't an easy pass available from the other midfielders (rice was a big disappointment for me). Whilst Pickford is not half as good a people make out with the ball at his feet either.
Southgate got it wrong but hopefully he is good enough to learn from it. We do have the nucleus of a good young side, especially with the double barrelled trio of callum ho trent ao and ruben lc added. The obvious problem is we don't have a dominant midfield leader. We looked lightweight last night, and i don't see the dutch as world beaters either, their own ball retention wasn't great, a tidy player like pre-injury Affelay would have improved it.

Holland didn't press that well. England made progress AFTER the world cup in the 4 games v Croatia and spain when we played an extra ball playing midfielder rather than a delph type. We were much more competent playing it out in those games apart from the last half hour in Spain when we defended the three goal lead. Last night was a huge step back. He picked an awful midfield but that in itself showed that after Winks and Even Henderson, we have no technicians in midfield to beat the press. It was an awful performance throughout

We massively need a midfielder who can put his foot in and play ( a Steven Gerrard an nzonzi, a johnny eustace)
There used to be a lot of players like this, but they seem to be getting very rare.
The nearest to it, is probably Jordan Henderson
If nzonzi was English and eustace was about 15 years younger, they would both walk into this team
A bit worrying really.

I think Foden needs to come in sooner rather than later, but his lack of game time at Citeh is a concern. I'd also like to see Grealish do well in the Premiership and force his way in. I think he's better than Barkley myself. You mention the Foden, Winks and Loftus Cheek triumvirate as an option, but they all need more games under their belt don't they? Winks has a bit more to do for me before I'm convinced. Alexander Arnold is now far and away the best right back so play him. Left back is a little flaky and Chilwell was a bit ropey in defence at times but good going forward. Stones was wholly responsible for that third goal too and if you add his non-marking of De Ligt for the first, then it really was a complete masterclass in how not to be an international centre back. I'd even see how Mings progresses next season and Tomori, as something needs to change. These two have ability on the ball, pace and intelligence. Any squad with Michael Keane hovering round is a weak one. The whole side looked knackered to me. Where was the mercurial Sterling from this season? Kane is half fit and Sancho still finding his feet. I can excuse last night for a number of reasons, but if we don't learn from it we'll walk blindly into the next tournament. Good analysis. I am going to summarise it. "We'll walk blindly into the next tournament".

England should definitely hoof it.. it's what brought them success in the past... Might of been penalty heartbreak if they did instead of laughingstock humiliation 😊 Less likely with Butland not on the pitch. Worst penalty saver ever.
