London Mayor Sadiq Khan has criticised John Cleese after the Fawlty Towers legend said the capital was "not really an English city any more".
The former Monty Python star tweeted: "Virtually all my friends from abroad have confirmed my observation. So there must be some truth in it..."

Sadiq Khan "We are proudly the English capital, a European city and a global hub."

I've worked and lived in London very recently....My honest opinion?... It's a cesspit... Build a wall around the M25 and leave it to rot

London is one of the great cities of the world, as close to a capital for the world as there is, only New York is in the same stratosphere.
As Steve Earle said "Ain't no need to go travelling, open the door and the world walks in"
It helps this country punch above it's weight and it pays a shit load of tax.
Something we should celebrate I would suggest.

London is a bloody dump that, architecture aside, becomes less recognisable as our capital as each year passes. Itโs a snap shot of what the country will be as a whole in less than fifty years time.

I noticed a critic of John Cleese's comments on Twitter was Dom Jolly.... Who happens to reside in The Cotswolds
London is the very image of what the UK will look like in a few short years.

I like London more and more as I get older. Once you come to terms with thing being a bit more expensive, and there being really nowhere to drink after 11.30pm it's a great place to visit.

I lived in London for a bit and on the whole it's like any European (or major US) city in that it's culturally brilliant but the disparity between the have's and have not's is noticeably more pronounced. When I moved from Stoke to London my annual salary jumped by 20k yet still that was not enough to live 'comfortably' in that metropolitan hell-hole. In my opinion it's not viable to live in London if you're on less than 65k per year (which is why you have people with what you'd consider decent jobs and salaries living like fucking students and sharing with a bunch of schleppers at the age of 40). In short, London can suck my fucking balls.

Mind you, I also heard on the same channel that a lot of the knife crime was caused by Somalian gangs, so I am a bit confused.

I'm sure someone as bright as he his, isn't immune to the utter hypocrisy of complaining that there are too many immigrants in London from his home in the Caribbean?! Surely a wind up? And if the Caribbean became more white than black, wouldn't it be fair to say it wasn't the same anymore? If Jamaica was suddenly overrun with Danes, Swedes, and Dutch, and they outnumbered the indigenous population, would it be fair then? I think it's a perfectly fair comment, but I knew where it would go as soon as I heard it. "Which random white guy can we have a go at this week?". I suppose the silly walk was a sign of his racist tendencies? ๐

Cleese laments the internationalisation of the capital, changed from his youth populated by cocknies and Londoners to one where foreign influences have altered the culture beyond recognition.
I don't think he is being racist, merely feeling nostalgia at the passing of time and the erosion of what once was, the dilution of Britishness. Of course he has a point and to dismiss him as racist misses it.
I for one detest cities and would never visit, let alone live in one by choice: far to busy, aggressive, an assault on the senses, truly overwhelming, a sea of faces, a myriad of voices, utter confusion

They came over as slaves to work on he sugar plantations , The caribe Indians have disappeared to be replllaced by the Africans
