Never visited Walkabout, nor DownUnder before it. Presuming that's where we are, the old The Antelope building, though I never went in there either {shut as I became old enough}. Not sure what to make of Hanley at the momeent, maybe a kind of transition/re-adjustment around Piccadilly/Cult Quarter. The new Woodman, Bottlecraft, Mart's etc. And The Exchange, Sugarmill and Underground putting plenty of stuff on. Not brilliant and perhasps not a lot for the younger folk {I don't know}, but better at the moment than it has been for a while is the feedback I'm getting. I wouldn't go on a night out unless I was up there to see a band anyway.

Been dodgy times at the Coach since the threat of demolition but I've heard that it's recently had new ownership and a new injection of life. It went really shite for a while, couldn't even rely on good ale. But apparently it's back.

Never been the place. The only boozer I used to go in down that area was The Antelope, but that's long been demolished. Went in there after work once (when I was working at Staybright Windows just down the road) and after a few pints Robin van der Laan walked in. Sat there chatting with him for a some time. Didn't punch him though.

Had some cracking nights out in there, much like Hanley though it’s been on the decline since around 2013.
Hanley is a fucking doghole, full of 16 year olds and roided up cunts who want to start everyone in sight because they can’t handle their Charlie.
The only time i’ll go there at night now is if there’s a Move night at the Sugarmill, the place is a toilet.
Newcastle isn’t the greatest but it’s night and day compared to Hanley now, personally I’d prefer to get on the train to Manchester or Liverpool, or even drive to Derby and stay over.

I used to drink in a pub called the Black Lion, which used to be on road from Shelton into Hanley (I think it was on Broad Street) but appears to have been redeveloped long ago

There's a building along Marsh St towards Burslem that looks like it might have been a pub, I can't remember it tho, anyone any ideas? Near the Mind place I think.
Or wasn't it a pub at all? I usually frequented the Flickers end of town, can't ever remember going there.

At the Museum end there was the Jovial Forresters' which was closed from the 50/60's until a brief resurrection late 90's. Dead now I presume. There was a downstairs biker bar along there for a bit too. In the Burslem direction, now a takeaway was The Dew Drop. A great boozer of two halves, old school and pre-Stage gig crowd combined. Shame.

In Hanley, for us it was always The Black Horse, The Zoo, The Stage Door, The Woodsman, Chicos, the one opposite the old Argos/Albion (was it called Harpers?) and on occasion The Borough Exchange.

Shame. Jovial Foresters was open until 2006 at least. I know that for sure as I watched England vs Jamaica World Cup 2006 warm-up game (of Crouchy robot dance fame) there. Dew Drop was a great pub and as you say, the designated pre-gig boozer for most. Sadly gone but BottleCraft and Mart's have proved more than adequate alternatives in recent years.

I remember using the The Stage (as the Sugarmill was). It had the ambiance of a village or school hall with wooden chairs stacked on the side. I remember Chris Jagger playing in the audience to hear what his band sounded like. I always liked the revolving door in the Albion, just so you could spin around in it and see what side you got flung out on. Glad to see the Golden Cup, Unicorn and the Coachmakers doing ok.

The building on that corner of Marsh St. I thought was a Gallery now. It was Swinton Insurance/Age concern and the local authority had it for a while. Lovely ornate type of building {Georgian?}, I've checked with my Hanley Pub oracle, he doesn;t remember it ever being a boozer going back to the sixties, and doesn't think it ever was. He said it was some kind of Chambers: of commerce or law he wanna sure. That's about all I've got mate.

Yes, always liked Birdcage walk, I think I misled you with my directions tho', I'm talking about walking up Trinity St from Tescos then taking a left at the traffic light junction, building is on the left about 100 yards down towards where Go Outdoors was.

Oh.. A bit disorientated now and can't think of the bldgs along there. There was the former Granville Hostel, that was once The Three Crowns... but that's more Century Street. There was also the Farrow & Firkin, but that was Foundry St I think. Tak a picture.

Bird Cage Walk used to be rich pickings for finding money on the floor, due to it being a prime location for various late night 'exchanges'.

The general decline is behind it as its now finding its feet again in regards regeneration and the pub scene Seriously it’s now a superb night down Piccadilly with more than enough bars and restaurants to cater for the new breed of Hanley nightlife pursuers and somewhere I’d take my wife too If you don’t use it how do you know?....give it a bash you’ll be surprised and this is from someone who used to think like you
