Appears that Crewe's strategy is to be aggressive towards the victims in fighting their corner and admitting liability, be interesting to see how that pans out as the media circus surrounds them in the coming months.
They claim they never sanctioned staff having young boys stay with them, even though Bennell's expenses account suggest otherwise according to the investigative journalists who made "Wall of Silence:

Doesn’t surprise me.
Crewe is a festering shithole full of diseased rednecks and should be fenced off from the rest of the civilised world.

I doubt this comes directly from Crewe.
This is more likely to be the position of their insurers and Crewe will not be in a financial position to pay any damages if they do not follow their insurers lead.
The insurers will say whether or not the case is to be defended and rightly or wrongly Crewe will take any criticism for the insurers decision.

As you say the fall out will only effect the club though they must be bricking it......

Did I read that Crewe will be expecting a huge amount of compensation from British Rail when the new link station is built as they will be forced to move?

I doubt its huge, as the compensation would have to bear some resemblance to the loss they would be likely to incur. And on the basis they are not and never really have made any money then I doubt they could claim huge loss.

Thought I read in the 10-13 million bracket but could be wrong. The high speed rail link is a billion pound operation and for Crewe to have obtained the link station it involves moving businesses to the West of the station including the stadium .Was talk of them moving to the Sandbach by-pass area of town but not sure if anything ever came of it. Chances are the new stadium will have to be outside a certain radius of Primary schools at this rate

Wouldn’t it just be easier for them admit they had a scumbag work for them who used their name and reputation for his gains in abusing children and they are disgusted that the club did not act in the children in their academies best interests under previous management and chief executives. I think a bit more respect and sympathy for Crewe as a football club would come their way, as it is with the stance they are taking and the belief that they are absent of blame I don’t think I’m alone in saying I hope they are taken to court by the victims sued for record damages and have to fold as a football club 🖕to them.

I wonder if the directors will be dragged into this sordid affair, wasn't their former manager on that board of directors ? my son was at the academy for a short while before been lured away by the opportunity to join the Stoke school of excellence as it was then, Burnell had already moved on by then but the rumors were rife about young kids been encouraged to have sleep overs before games, I didn't have first hand experience of witnessing it but it seemed common knowledge at the time. I always found it to be a nasty little club living off the reputation of bringing kids through which was pretty much BS as most were taken from bigger clubs when released at 15-16 years of age, at the time DOG was widely tipped for the England Youth job by the press which suddenly unexpectedly went to HW I think it was who was a rank outsider

At least the current ground is on the edge of town with ample parking and exit traffic roads and a ground on the Crewe Green area would make more sense or even near the new A500 bypass

They should be taking the lead of Man City(yes I’m aware they are cash rich and they can use that to help the situation ) but they are handling this appalling situation with dignity and an attitude of righting wrongs that happened at their club.
Crewe’s stance seems one of it was never their fault and we will sweep it under the carpet..

In the early national news reports on the story and in the national press we were called out along with Man City and of course Crewe. However it seems our interactions with Mr. Bennell were minimal and unofficial and since we are no longer in the Premier League we don't exist at all in the eyes of the press and consequently we have blipped off the radar altogether so far as this sorry story goes.

Can't see any charges against him in his time with us- was he at Stoke very long does anyone know? Are accusations in Florida, Man City and Crewe which might explain no mention of Stoke. Nice to not be making headlines on this one

Crewe’s stance seems one of it was never their fault and we will sweep it under the carpet.. I'm no fan of Crewe but you've already answered your own question when it comes to the difference between the responses of both clubs. Money. City can afford whatever level of compensation the courts decide and can pay it off their own backs. Crewe will be completely reliant on their insurers and their insurers obviously want to minimise their liabilities. Historical allegations are full of inconsistencies, evidential gaps, lack of forensic evidence etc and insurers seize on this and try to use every gap and everything that can't conclusively be proven as an excuse not to pay out. Crewe can't afford to pay out themselves and would go bankrupt so they are forced to make the public statements that their insurers tell them to make or else they'll lose their cover and face certain bankruptcy. They're stuck between a rock and a hard place so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt with this. Do the 'right thing' and probably go bust. Or do what their insurers say and face a PR disaster. Hobson's choice.

I think the majority of the victims are after Crewe recognising their abuse and apologising, as well as ensuring that the probability of this happening again is pretty much 0, more than taking them for the money. But the more Crewe deny it the more if it was me I would want take them for every penny they had

There's an awful lot who have been around since the 80's still involved with the club. So it did happen more or less directly on their watch. With the defence Crewe have gone for, you have to suspect that whether innocent or guilty, Dario Gradi could well be thrown under the bus to save the club. Surely there no one at the club knew and authorised kids staying at their homes is if they also portray it as Gradi doing it without permission as well. Or, even that Gradi was doing it underhandedly as a rogue director because he knew the club wouldn't agree and therefore it shifts more attention onto him. Putting the pieces together it does look like with the Chelsea stuff as well in past for Gradi he could well be an easy target to shift the blame to. It's strange just how ingrained Gradi is though, and it could perhaps count against him in this. He's involved with/got shares in etc almost the entire operation at Crewe. Not just the club, but the company that owns facilities and a few others besides. Companies House has him listed as a director since before 1991. To me that suggests that Crewe could well pitch a defence entirely around Gradi manipulating his position on the board and as the club manager to authorise whatever Bennell wanted/needed.
