Hopefully the start of a sensible, liberal, pro-business, pro-Europe, modernist, progressive, eco-friendly party of the centre ground.
Perhaps at last a party that someone vaguely sensible could actually vote for?
If they could get it right it would be the perfect antidote to the nut jobs on the hard right of the Tory party and the deluded Corbyn mob of the far left.
But it will all be a few years away if it happens I guess.

So it’s going to be the SDP or a rehash of New Labour?

They should trigger bye elections. They are now in parliament under false pretenses.

It had the effect of dragging the Labour Party in to the centre ground and the Conservative Party away from their extreme nationalist agenda. Politics was fought in the centre ground and Britain was a big player on the world stage.

It looks as if they will be ‘New Labour’ mk2, or Tory light. They may appeal to the south east but I can’t see them making much headway much north of Watford once all the euphoria has worn off.

It had the effect of dragging the Labour Party in to the centre ground and the Conservative Party away from their extreme nationalist agenda. Politics was fought in the centre ground and Britain was a big player on the world stage. I think the SDP was ultimately a great success for the Labour Party. People forget the SDP was pretty popular and Labour leaned towards their position paving the way for the successful Blair elections. At first glance it looks a little bit like Blairite 2.0 but a pro-EU, centre party is the Lib Dems. I can't for the life of me think way they haven't tried to try broker a deal with Cable. A reboot and reform of an existing party is so much easier than starting a new party. Maybe they have big enough ego's to stand as independent's at the next GE. Maybe, just maybe they're hoping to start the removal of Corbyn et al and return to Labour for the next GE. Can't see it though with mongmentum electing any future leader.

Nigel Farage suggests this is part of the realignment of UK politics which I take to meaning realignment of political parties. Labour party needs to split in two, has done for a long time Conservative party needs to spelt in two, has done for a long time Should all that come to pass there wouldn't be any more point in a Liberal party leaving Greens & nationalists
Would imagine all that would take at least ten years (& easily 30)
however suspect it won't come to pass at all.

The Conservative Party are now guaranteed to win the next 3 general elections. Well done Chuka. If you really believe that, and you may be right, you are at least tacitly accepting they are the remaining sane voice of Labour, or at least they were. Hopefully the net effect will be to pull Labour to the centre and the Tories away from the hard right as they both haemorrhage votes to the new party in the centre ground. Whether the new party succeeds in its own right or not hardly matters. I don't suppose it will. Elections are generally won on the centre ground and at the moment centrists are having to lurch to left or right in a way that is not pleasant at all.

My beliefs is that there should be bi elections but the rules allow against that. I accept that
You cannot call a second referendum if you don’t have the bollocks to put yourself up against the electorate as an independent
Hypocrisy at its finest
Well done chuka
