Looks decent to me. I take it Allen and Etebo are the box to boxers? What do you make of the diamond as a formation? Do it's strengths outweigh it's weaknesses? Guess we'll find out! But the important thing is he seems to be totally convinced by it and associates all his success with it. He describes the full-backs and the deepest midfielder as "key" in lots of his interviews, so it'll be interesting to see who he targets there. You'd think it'd be the Luton bloke he targets for left-back, but the bloke he used most as the sitting midfielder is 34, so no chance of him coming on board. He was only 5' 8" though, so maybe it won't be some big beast. I must admit I am not totally sold on it. All the width comes from the full backs, who need to be ridiculously fit, and it seems pretty easy to counter due to lack of said width? Be interesting to see who he gets in, though.

We know Nathan is settled on this system as evidenced by Hart this week. So how many are we short to really play it and be successful? Butland Bauer......jury out re defensive capability? Batth Indi Clucas.....only real option for now needs a run to see? Adam or Woods....doubts with Charlie re can he go on much longer and Woods doesn’t seem to have the long pass range? Etobo Allen Both have the energy to be the wide midfielders in the diamond? Bojan his only role for me where it plays to his strength and he has to have a run....we will know after a few games whether he still has it? Just don’t think Ince fits but for this season could try him in place if Bojan if he fails? Afobe Vokes Got to give them a run.... Phew....... Next season.... 10 i'd say. ??? Edwards Batth ??? ??? ??? ???? Etebo ??? Vokes ???? Subs: Fed, Shawx, Woods, ????, ????. Verlinden, ????

Diamond ? Please advise me on the difference between 'a diamond' and the current 'scrum down on the left hand side of the pitch' ?

I think Butland and Allen will go to help pay off the lazy wasters (Imbula, Ndayie, Afobe, Wimmer, Berahino) and I think Bojan, McClean, Diouf, Adam, Fletcher will go, so I think this would leave us with: FIRST CHOICE (Sub): NEW GK (Federici) EDWARDS (Bauer) BAATH (ShawX) NEW (Indi) NEW (Tymon) WOODS (Clucas) NEW (Verlinden) NEW (Sorensen) NEW (New) INCE (Campbell) VOKES (New) So I make that 12 to ship out, 6 to get in. But those 6 are critical positions to the diamond.

I don't think Afobe will come good - and any hope that Ince can succeed in the No.10 role seems pretty wishful thinking. Looks like Woods and Bojan are as good as gone. Clucas could start as one of the central 2 maybe? He seems to really like him for some strange reason.

I really think if we are playing the diamond we need a ball playing centre half, watching Shawcross & Batth carrying the ball forward last week was painful.

I really think if we are playing the diamond we need a ball playing centre half, watching Shawcross & Batth carrying the ball forward last week was painful. I agree. The Diamond relies on specialists in key positions (and requires everyone on the pitch to be super-fit). The two full-backs, and the base and the top of the diamond are crucial to making a success of this. At the moment we only have possibly one of those sorted (RB). These 4 positions have to be our priority for recruitment imho if he’s going to make a success of it.

That’ll leave us with four. Beyond that he’ll need at least one full back, a DM, no. 10 potentially and a creative mid. There will be no wingers so I am not sure where Ince and McClean fit in. Ince hasn’t played as a ten for a while so I think that experiment is done.

If he keeps hold of the 3 we currently have and can blood the two youngsters then he might not need or prioritise another CB. McClean and Ince can both go for me. I’m unconvinced that Ince can play that ACM role in a diamond (although I’ve mentioned previously that I think he could play as a second striker) and I have no idea how McClean would fit in full stop. The fact that Jones has played JM as a second striker - and persisted with it for a little while - was quite a head scratcher tbh. We will need a ‘Plan B’ though so I still think there’s space for a winger or two to knock around in the squad, I’d just rather that be Verlinden and another youngster than Ince or McClean.

Both the Luton centre-backs are old school defenders. Could be that's what he likes there.
Matty Pearson (6' 3") Jones, who has already signed one centre-half with Sonny Bradley arriving from Plymouth, told lutontown.co.uk: “Matty’s versatility is a big plus, but the main thing for us is that he’s a natural defender – an out-and-out defender.
“He loves doing the ugly side of the game, he’s a big character, a warrior, a real leader on the pitch – and that’s something that we earmarked. We feel that with the way that we play, we need that and we’ve strengthened very well.
Sonny Bradley (6' 5") "he’s a proper old school centre back but isn’t the most gifted footballer"

Yep, lots of consensus with a few differences round the edges with people here. Consensus is that we have to fill at least 4 really really pivotal positions for the first team, and maybe 8-10 for the squad and do it very well. The challenge with the diamond over, say, a more standard 442 or 4231 is that I feel in those systems, you could get players more able to play a couple of systems or positions; or play the systems in slightly different ways based on personnel. However with the diamond, you absolutely need your full backs to be fast and able to both cross and defend (almost quasi wing backs), your CAM needs to be highly creative and mobile, your midfielders need to be capable of sustained lung busting performances, and you are effectively recruiting a squad without a winger or wide forward. A nice article here on the diamond, called the "dying formation":- footballbh.net/2018/02/27/4-1-2-1-2-diamond/. Funny that in this article it suggests the diamond means more attacking through the centre and so less reliance on forwards who can head: Question-mark over Vokes signing! Lots of the emphasis on the CAM. Question mark: Who the hell is that going to be? So what next? We might hope to recruit say 35m from Butland, Allen and then whoever we can shift out of Maclean, Pieters, Bauer, Woods, Bojan, BMI, Diouf. Can't see we can shift Afobe or Ince as it would mean taking a 5m hit on either i'd say. Berahinho needs to be out the picture. I really think NJ should reconsider his position on loans. Its almost a necessity to use the loan system and use it well: For a starter, its access to young athetic players. Secondly, loanees are generally key for promoted or challenging teams (particularly last season). Thirdly, it means we can focus our more modest (15m-20m?) investments on the 4-5 or so critical players we need to get right. For the same reason, we also need to be aggressive in the market for freebies. There are a few useful ones kicking around this summer, not be just for the first #11, but squad players e.g. Klose at Norwich (CB), M Olsson at Swansea (LB), Knudsen at Ipswich (LB/CB), Gunarrson at Cardiff (CDM/CM), Fer at Swansea (CDM), Browne at Preston (CAM), Henrickson at Hull (CM), McGoldrick at Sheff Utd (CF).

So, in the same way he had 2 old-school head-it, kick-it centre-halves, it does kind of fit if he's trying to re-create his Luton template. As for the No.10 type, who knows? www.lutontoday.co.uk/sport/football/luton-town/lee-happy-his-striking-instincts-are-still-sparkling-in-the-diamond-1-8722601Used a converted striker, Elliot Lee, there in his last year

League 1 is pretty primitive!

Jones seems like Ince though and seems to think he has been playing very well if he is to be believed ...

The key role is the deep-lying MF who will be the one who acts as a third CB in many ways and is the playmaker from a defensive position. The question marks around Ryan and Batth from a diamond perspective is not their distribution but their pace and athleticism; you are very vulnerable to quick counter attacks when playing it. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Batth in that regard.

All sorts on here presenting almost scientific analysis of players and formations
BUT conveniently forgetting or, ignoring the elephants in the room namely:-
1) our squad is now incredibly unbalanced and in truth - shit really 2) We've recently paid top dollar again for - very, very ordinary players 3)After some years of heavy investment -The Academy, has come up with pretty much fuck all to help this unhappy circumstance (apart from 1 maybe 2 right now, that might just scrape a living in the EFL) 4) Our biggest transfer investments whilst remaining on the books - dont even play for us anymore ( GO FIGURE) 5) And, the few really decent ones left in the team actually - don't wanna be there anymore 6) ALL THIS - Whilst the utter crap and the fraudsters polluting our club, are happy to sit on their remaining fat stupid wasteful contracts, happy to wring the very last drop out of the club 7) And for the life of me - Why hasnt a certain member of the playing staff been sacked yet ?
and lastly and most importantly
8) Persons directly responsible at least in part, if not in totality --- remain at the club ?
in short - its a fucking nightmare
few could've predicted as recently as 18 months ago
And I would respectfully ask the entire Coates family - during recent times - what on earth were you thinking ?
Very lastly - an away win today means absolutely nothing --- thats how bad its got - and its unforgivable

That's bad news. It isn't bad news if you have a big lad up front as you can mix it up. Jones had Collins at Luton. Pretty certain we signed one in January in readiness...?

Vokes will be fine and score goals for us next season in a Diamond providing we get a lb in a similar mould to Edwards who can provide good crosses. Vokes needs a strike partner and bodies around him, next season we'll see that hopefully.
