We've probably got some of the best youngsters in the country coming through. Campbell, Collins, Bursik and Souttar are pretty much all guaranteed to be Premier League footballers. Add Edwards, Sorenson and Verlinden to that and then you've got a very successful academy output over the past few seasons. And that's only the current crop. I don’t disagree that we’ve got some good young players coming through but don’t credit our academy for them all. Campbell - signed from MCFC Bursik - signed from Wimbledon Souttar - signed from Dundee (actually played in their first team before coming to Stoke) Collins - signed as a young lad so can credit our academy in part. Sorensen looks ok, he’s not ripping up any trees at Milton Keynes. Verlinden never plays. Nobody has ever really used him. Edwards is ok. Will probably have a career like Dickinson, minus the Premier League part. Our recruitment of youth is good but not sure the academy is that good. Crewe bring players through from the age of 8 into the first team.

I'm talking about players from a very young age coming through the academy and playing for the first team on a regular basis. Crewe had 7 players who are products of their own academy and had been with the club way before they were 16 in their starting eleven against Rochdale on Saturday. They have also fielded a full 11 of homegrown players not too long ago in a league match.

If and it's a big if, we sign Doughty and loan him back to Charlton, wouldn't it make our left back issue more pressing?.

I think these two deals were separate. Doughty, although he has played full back, looks to be a left sided winger/midfielder/wing back and would replace Matondo if Rabbi doesn't stay, or add to the squad if he does. I'm so confused now though that I can't even remember if we've been linked with Pickering

Can he defend? This is the most important for me when it comes to a defender! After that we can speak about his attacking skills/contribution!

Never seen him play, but sounds like every man and his dog is after this lad.

Which is why it would be a coup if we could land him.

Not withstanding the deficiencies up front, the left hand side of our team is shocking and has been for years. If this lad, Doughty and the recent loan signing all come off we look to have addressed this area which is long overdue.

He has played left back on occasion according to Transfermarkt - but you are correct, he is mostly a winger or left footed midfielder. So we need a left back whether or not Alfie is loaned back to Charlton. Pickering and Fox would be a decent pair of left backs with Fox the more defensive option (and also able to play as a cb if needed) and Pickering the more creative/attacking option.

The 7 players against Rochdale and the 11 not too long ago are playing in League One and probably will not be required to adjust to anything higher whilst at Crewe. We could possibly adjust our Academy thinking to providing players for League One butnot sure Stoke fans would appreciated that. Running an Academy to produce Chapionship and Premier level players is far removed from somewhere like Crewe where the requirements are not immediately high. Sure they might sell one now and again but it's an assembly line geared to provide players for wherever Cewe are situated NOW.

Odd quote from the Crewe manager they don't have to sell Pickering unless its the right deal for the club, but the right deal might not be as expensive in the current climate which kinda of reads to me as they do need to sell.

IF true then this suggests: Stoke dithering or: Stoke have other options or: Stoke waiting to see that Rovers bid is before gazumping then

I don't think you can accuse Stoke of dithering this window to be fair.

www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/19002829.rovers-lodge-bid-crewe-alexandra-left-back-harry-pickering/Rovers had made a bid for Crewe Alexandra left back Harry Pickering, the Lancashire Telegraph can confirm.
The club have a long-standing interest in the 21-year-old left back who is also attracting the attentions of Stoke City. However, Rovers are the only club to bid for the talented left back and it is understood the clubs aren’t far away in their valuations of the player.
Pickering still has two-and-a-half years left on his contract, but Crewe are realistic as to the fee they could receive for the player
If Blackburn can agree a fee, it'll be very small.

How the hell is he only 22?? Feel like I've been hearing his name for years. In fact I kind of assumed he'd failed to live up to early promise and petered out tbh.
