I think Trump's best chance is the presidential debates and to hope that Biden performs weakly in them. There's every chance he might. Biden is very sensibly keeping relatively low key and allowing Trump to dig his own grave during the on-going Coronavirus and economic crisis. If he can appear as the sane alternative (not hard!) it's a good look. I hope Trump loses and it signals the start of the demise of populism generally. I did wonder if it might be a relatively short-lived thing which people come to see through fairly quickly and return to more sensible governance. Unfortunately a bit late for the US and for us. I read a good definition(in this Guardian article) that stated populism is an illiberal democratic response to undemocratic liberalism. Which seems like a pretty good definition in that “populism brings to the fore issues that large parts of the population care about, but that the political elites want to avoid discussing”. If that is correct, Trump losing will not signal the start of the demise of populism. What is needed is political elites take on and address “populist” issues. (Naturally the Guardian focuses on the evils of populism, which it does very well, but doesn’t have much to say about how to address the “undemocratic liberalism” that gave rise to populism) That's one way of looking at it. One study found that "Support for populism strongly correlates with lower personal life satisfaction, frustration with democracy and how it is working, and conspiratorial thinking among voters. Blame is a standard populist tool". My main problem with populism (universal suffrage in general in fact) is that the vast majority of voters haven't got a clue about politics and care even less, and that, given the above statement is probably quite accurate, most populist politics is simple dog whistle stuff, which often appeals to the baser motivations in the electorate. So you end up with targeting immigrants and minorities as a problem, wanting the death penalty reintroduced, taxes cut back while public services are also improved, much of which is contradictory and self-defeating but makes the 'disenfranchised' feel a bit better. I think the impacts of that approach have been self evident over the last few years. So, yes, I can see why the 'elites' (another of the populist's vocab) prefer not to discuss these topics because how do you convince someone who has little or no knowledge of a subject to see beyond "well, it's common sense innit, if you kill a murderer, he ain't gonna do it again, is he" with no consideration of things like mental health, whether or not the culprit was genuinely guilty (and what to do if he wasn't - bit late!), the fact that it's effectively state murder etc etc. That's just one obvious example. The reintroduction of the death penalty is a strong populist player. Brexit being the other obvious example. If Cameron hadn't gone to the country (and we'll ignore the potential political impact from UKIP on the Tory Party for the time being) we wouldn't have been in the political and legislative mess the country has been in for the last four years and probably a fair bit better off, at least economically). But I agree you then have a them and us culture with a distant elite bunch of rulers and the 'common people' who feel largely ignored. I've said for some time that politics should be a mandatory subject in our schools, just as it is in Germany, in order to allow people to leave school with at least some idea of how our democracy works and the various voices in it. You could combine it with other essential requisites for life such as mortgage info, taxation, credit and pension info and call it Life Skills or something. That way you might have a larger proportion of the population more aware of how it all works. Got to be more useful than RE for a start!

He was respectful even to those he didn't agree with. At least under Obama the world felt safe, as things stand now there is so much uncertainty around and the world seems much more hostile. Obama also spoke very well, unlike Trump who can't stop spreading hate. Surely you see it? Everyday Trump posts hateful messages, he is constantly stirring and causing greater division. He doesn't want the country to unite, it looks like he wants a civil war so he can take full control through law and order he keeps promoting. It's not even the media either, it's straight from the horse's mouth, the man is dangerous. Obama is one of the biggest bombers in history. Obama deported more people than Trump Obama has put more children in prison than Trump. Obama was just a puppet for the, we need a black president gang, Tupac would be very disappointed in Obama Trump divides his country using hate speech. Obama ain't mister nice guy but at least the way he conducted himself was professional and didn't divide people. With Trump it's either your on my team or your the enemy. Trump did drop the next best thing to a nuclear bomb, they're all as bad as each other on that front. Trump will eventually start wars it's just not his priority yet. Why is he seperating the country? Why is he saying if he loses it will be because the elections were rigged? They weren't rigged when he got into power how will they be now that he is? He wants to take full control and become a dictator. His own words are all the evidence you need.

He's gonna win without a doubt. He has to win because he knows he’s doing bird for obstruction of justice once he’s out... Trump Isn’t Leaving They are scared of Trump getting in again because Obama and Bush might be doing bird for war crimes and the theft of 2billions worth of oil from Iraq, allegedly..

Under Trump gang violence will increase because he is turning Republicans and Democrats on each other. His rhetoric will cause a huge increase and causes divides which will last decades. Families will become divided all because of some privalaged rich prick who doesn't give a shit about anything but power and wealth. For fuck sake he's spent years hanging around with a convicted pedophile. There's not a chance in hell he didn't know what he was up to and is likely keeping his mouth shut on others involved and probably including himself. Corruption has surrounded Trump all through his life, he's just a vile human being. Obama spoke for all Americans and Trump only speaks for his supporters because he knows they are his best route to taking full control. His past will catch up with him eventually. America looks like it's on the path of having a civil war because of Trump. It's ok to disagree with people, it's good in fact. Trump wants a country who thinks the way he tells them and it won't be long before they do if he doesn't step down if he loses. Do you think Trump will try to take full control? If Trump loses the election do you think he will just walk away?

Trump had nothing on her and still doesn't and doesn't have enough power yet to lock her up for some fake bullshit. Trump ordered the assassination of an Iranian military officer didn't he and you weren't at war with Iran? Is that not a war crime?

The Russia connections just won’t go away for Trump. It was red hot in the summer of 2018 and it is now gathering steam again with the Senate investigation. Hillary’s emails don’t really compare to Trump being in close cahoots and taking advice from a career FSB spy on how to win a presidential election and then manage the country. This is the Republican-dominated Senate’s report’s conclusions, basically confirming the allegations of 2018. Putin is laughing all the way the The Whitehouse.

I look back at my childhood with renewed admiration for my mates that could launch a halfender seemingly miles, I was jealous anyway cos throwing was something I was particularly shit at but this new information puts a completely different light on things.
I recently found myself wondering if I'd be even more embarrassed having him as the leader of my country than I am with the bluffer, astonishingly I think I would be.

Trouble is he's not as stupid as he sounds.
In the end siding with the police over the protestors is ploughing a winning furrow with the majority of Americans.
The Republicans know that.
The Democrats walk a tricky line with the BLM protests, they rely on these votes so they can't hack them off but if they are seen to side with protestors over police they lose the suburbs.
Trump is campaigning like an outsider, you wouldn't even guess he is presiding over this mess and that is the genius of the Republican campaign IMHO.

You see the same approach over here too. It's amazing how so much is still the fault of "the Left/Liberals/Progressives/the woke etc" while the Right which, by the next election will have governed for over 70% of the previous 45 years in this country, are routinely voted back in charge but apparently powerless to stop the 'opposition' from ruining the country!...

The brexit referendum changed everything, If Labour want to regain power, they need to stop patronising the electorate.

Classics in there like “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” “I like people who weren’t captured.” In the 1990s, Trump said his efforts to avoid contracting sexually transmitted diseases constituted his “personal Vietnam.”

Even more bizarre is both will probably still piss being re-elected! I'd be amazed if the bluffer lasts that long but the other loon is certainly in with a good shout it seems, quite incredible. Watched a couple of things recently where essentially a large part of Democrats winning was because they went tougher on crime than the Republicans and that avenue isn't open to them this time. Read about Jesse Helms being elected in 1990 - he was a racist who still beleived in segragation and was a complete homophobe instrumental in US policy to ban aids folk travelling. In the 1990 election he was up against Harvey Gantt bidding to become the country's only black senator. Gantt was polling a double digit lead up until the week of the election. At this point Helms campaign lauchned two videos - the first going from colour fading to black and white which made Gantt's face jet black with bright white teeth. The second was this: The last one accused Gantt of wanting to hire gay teachers. Helms got 53% of the vote. In 1996 Helms beat Gantt again with 53% of the vote again. However the key thing was the total number of votes rose 25% from the election before meaning folk came out to ensure a racist homophobe remained in situ. Trump'll piss the election as the silent majority will be out in force I reckon.
