I too enjoyed seeing Roger and Malcolm on the morning T.V. show. Roger sometimes lets his Stoke affinities show on North West Tonight. A bit of a "double" for the area as Countryfile tonight was from the Manifold Show with a good advert for cheese and bacon filled oatcakes! (as well as the wonderful scenery to be found in the area)

Would you still be able buy a season ticket for you seat/standing spot though, or would it be a first come first served when you get it, like unreserved seating?. Ive got used to the folk around me and id like to think they've got used to me, and id hate to lose my seat space to someone who just comes in and takes my spot, thus denying me talking to the wonderful array of folk I've known for many years. I believe safe-standing is just a bolted on seat with a bar in front. So you have your usual seat number and you stand in front of it. if there's a return to actual terracing (I believe there should be but maybe safe-standing is as far as this'll go) then I assume that would be more unreserved. If you and your mates have a favourite spot on the terrace and it's going to be full, then you just have to get there early. Still all tickets though, ensuring any future terrace can never be pay on the gate is a good safety mechanism. Although It's clear that an over-crowded terrace at hillsborough wouldn't have been fatal if not for the fences/pens. Even just eliminating the pens would probably have prevented the disaster. I'm not saying this to advocate a return to pay on the gate terracing btw, just to point out that terracing itself should never be scapegoated for that tragedy.

I always say to people presenting at work if they look like they are having a good time the audience will too! How did I score on the “smileometer” , Godfrey ? 🤔 Malcolm! I think you shaped up well physically and a cheery disposition right from the start and of course much jocularity at the end, good job! I must say I do like Roger Johnson and Nina Warhurst, I feel like there is no 'edge' to them, they just want to get the most out of their guests. Clearly the BBC don't consider them to have the star quality of Dan Walker and Naga Munchetti so they just get given odd weekends and holiday cover on BBC Breakfast and unlike Dan and Naga I guess they are not expecting the call for 'Strictly' any time soon! But still I prefer the show when they are on and once again, good work!

He has a pleasant manner and always seems on top of his brief. Lakeland used the word avuncular above about me ( I'm not at all sure about that ! ) but I think it's a good word to describe Roger (and indeed his dad). We had a brief chat off air about the Potters and the Craven Cottage reality check ( a ground which will forever be associated in my mind with you witnessing my unfortunate accident with my hot coffee and the bald pate of a fellow Stokie . )

I wouldn't quite go so far as to say he saw the funny side of it though:-) I shouldn't really confess this, but that wasn't the only unfortunate incident I've had with a fellow stokie in recent seasons. My daugther and I were on the coach to an away game, and I put our butties, which my wife had kindly made for us, on the luggage rack. After an hour or two, I got them down. My daughter says I announced with surprised delight " Oh, look, she's put salad in them", and we enjoyed a nice lunch. About 20 mins later the guy on the seat in front who was with his son got up to get something down from the rack. I saw him searching with a very puzzled look on his face before taking down a pack which I recognised, and the awful truth dawned on me - we had eaten their butties . I had to confess and they had no option but to eat ours, sans salad !. He was not at all amused

I have a clip of it ( ands also one I did for the news channel) but unfortunately I've just tried to attach them (seprartely) and both are too big to attach on here, unless anyone can tell me a way round that

In the aftermath of the disaster the focus indeed was on the fences, and how/why they were the cause of the disaster. Many clubs took down fencing very quickly and escape exits were left open and manned. It was only in the light of the Justice Taylor report that Terracing in itself was scapegoated. The thatcher government didn’t get their membership cards but got crowd control by proxy with the introduction of all seated stadia, many fans were happy with the report as it actually listened to the experiences of ordinary supporters. Terracing was never going to be a part of the future even though we knew it was the fences.

Terracing was never going to be a part of the future even though we knew it was the fences. Yes that’s all true but Taylor was critical of the way football treated its fans and saw all seater as not just a safety issue but one of improving overall standards. He saw terraces as an example of poor quality facilities not as something fans would positively choose to do. Hence he was wrong in his prediction that fans would get used to sitting and the demand for standing would disappear.

Fans will be allowed to stand in selected Premier League and Championship stadiums this season for the first time in more than 25 years as part of a trial of safe standing.
The Sports Ground Safety Authority (SGSA) is to invite expressions of interest from clubs in the top two divisions to have pilots of safe standing this season.
Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers, the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Chelsea, Cardiff City and Bristol City are among the clubs whose stadiums would be able to accommodate safe standing areas the easiest

Safe standing is just a extension of what we do at away games stand up but with a rail in front to stop you falling forward. It will not allow anymore in than the number of seats,it’s not like we remember, pay your money stand where you want, you still will need a seat number.

I’m pretty sure you don’t get a seat number as safe standing does definitely increase capacity, Dortmund’s capacity is lower for Champions League games as standing is not allowed for UEFA competitions. Considerably lower too. I might be wrong but I’m sure I read somewhere there is three standing tickets to every one seat. It’s definitely a step in the right direction though and is safer than standing with normal seats like we do away.

It’s definitely a step in the right direction though and is safer than standing with normal seats like we do away. Dortmund’s yellow wall is largely made up of actual traditional terracing I believe. I think it’s been temporarily converted to all seated even domestically this season, as a precaution against COVID. So when converting traditional terrace to seating there’s a capacity drop. When converting a stand built for seating to a safe standing area I assume there is no capacity increase? But if building a stand primarily for safe standing, I expect that each row would be built with the ability to accommodate more than one line of people, whereas with the seat down it wouldn’t be able to and that’s where the capacity increase would come from. If you knocked down our home end and built a new safe standing stand exactly the same size, I think it would lead to a capacity increase for the same sized stand. But if you converted the boothen to safe standing it wouldn’t increase the capacity? This is my understanding but I could be off. I’m slightly confused as to how it works in Germany.

In many English stadia in the top 2 leagues, the limiting factor of a safe standing stand is the amount of people the concourse will hold. In the bet365 stadium, for example, most of the stands have concourses which are bang on the minimum size for the number of seats above those concourses. At Stoke the Lower tier of the main stand and the new corner are about the only areas which could theoretically be allowed to have more fans admitted than the current number of seats. Since the bet365 was built the rules have changed so more recently built stadia tend to have larger concourses in relation to the numbers of seats they serve

Here are the criteria for clubs "Clubs that want to take part in the scheme need to fulfil a number of criteria which the SGSA says includes: Having seats with barriers/independent barriers - which must be in both home and away sections Fans must be able to sit or stand in the licensed area Seats cannot be locked in the 'up' or 'down' position and there must be one seat/space per personThe licensed standing areas must not impact the viewing standards of other fans, including disabled fans There must be a code of conduct in place for fans in the licensed standing area"

The Supporters Council need to get in touch with the club about this ASAP. We only got contactless card payments recently, this might happen in 5-10 years. Peter Coates is against safe-standing, or at least was when it was last mentioned. If we had any sense at all we'd have put rail seating in the new corner when it was built, complete lack of forward thinking.

The Supporters Council need to get in touch with the club about this ASAP. Absolutely. There should now be a consultation and open debate at Stoke City ( and indeed all clubs) about the possibilities, options and level of interest. I almost feel a bit emotional about this - this is the culmination of a 30-year campaign to get to the position where those who want to stand can do so in safety and without breaking ground regulations, and those who want to sit can do so without their view being blocked by fans standing in front of them. It's been a long time coming, but logic and common sense are finally winning through.

But it wasn't, we are where we are and we must now look positively at the possibilities opened up by the Government's new announcement. I remember Peter once telling me when I raised it with him that " this is a horse which won't run". Well the horse is now running. Not before time, but better late than never.

I remember going to Ninian park a few times as a 14/15 year old, around 2003-2004, and becoming obsessed with safe standing which was a (seemingly) fully formed campaign even back then. I remember telling my schoolmates it’d happen within 5 years and getting told I was talking shit, so I was only a decade and a half away from not looking like a mug…

Whilst it’s true home fans may have a choice , I’m not sure that will apply to away fans My concern is clubs opting for rail seats in home sections are likely to put rail seats in across their entire away section .( think that’s what Liverpool are doing 1600 back of the Kop against 6000 in the road end ) . so nothing will change for away fans , in away sections you’ll still have people who will stand and others who want to sit .. The 6000 in the entire stand will negate sight line issues because effectively by default everyone will be expected to stand in that section or are there proposals that a choice has to be given to away fans ..ie two separately defined spaces

Do you need to completely rip out existing seating to install rail seating or can it be built around what's already there? I remember when Bristol City fitted something similar back in 2014 they needed to replace everything (below video). The more recent Anfield photos also seem to show the rails are physically connected to the seats at the back of the Kop (not sure if they're new seats or not?) Given Coates said he was against it for ' financial reasons' back in 2014 and the 3/4s of the existing seating only went in a couple of years ago it doesn't sound like the club have much appetite for it.

They could do the same in the home stands as well - although there would then have to be a period when fans in those stands were invited to choose to move to fully seated areas or rail seated from other parts of that stand. Edit - I actually think it would have been better to start the trial next season to give time for ST holders to rearrange their places more easily in the long summer break.
