No gigs for a month for me! Then 3 in under a week. hubris. (post-rock from Switzerland) were brilliant in Liverpool. Sadly only about 20 in attendance, yet I wouldn't be surprised if it was the better gig than Godspeed You! Black Emperor down the road in Manchester. Of Light was so incredible, that when it ended, there was stunned silence then a gasp from the audience! Not something I've experienced before. AV Sunset and L.O.E were quality post-rock/post-metal support acts too. I'm excitedly awaiting L.O.E's next album after hearing one of the new songs live. Battle Beast (power metal from Finland) were excellent as always, though I wasn't massively feeling this gig for some reason. It's good to see them playing bigger and bigger venues each time. Alice Gold is making a comeback 13 years after her psych-rock debut album (I first saw her at Bluedot, the first Jodrell Bank live event). One of my favourite singers, I'd missed hearing her fantastic range of vocals live. She's a brilliant performer even with just her electric guitar for company (she broke her acoustic the night before). Pearl Charles and Fugees (if they don't cancel again) coming up. Did you go to Pearl Charles? (at the Deaf, I'm assuming). Ended up going very last minute. Enjoyable gig and she's got some great tunes. Stage was barely off the floor so everyone barring the front two rows had a fairly shit view, especially when she was sat down on the keys. Looking forward to the album next year.

Saw Steve Hackett at Symphony Hall Brum Monday night, beautiful venue, great acoustics as ever and Steve with his usual fantastic band. 2 sets, an hour of newer material to start plus the evergreen Everyday and a chunk of his early solo Shadow of the Hierophant. Then after the break for this tour he focussed on my least favourite classic Genesis record The Lamb but it was done well ( to be fair he rolls between the albums and I've seen him do them all justice over the years) and then surprised me by throwing some big hitters in off Selling England and not playing a song that's usually a banker for him. Not a bad thing at all. Monday night gigs a pain in the arse though lol. Believe he's in Stoke next weekend so worth a watch if you're at all prog rock or Genesis inclined Have you ever seen Canadian band The Musical Box? Fantastic Genesis homage. Saw them on their Selling England tour twice a few years ago and they replicated the tour from '73 to perfection including use of some of the original set. If you like Canadian Prog, check out Canadian band Mystery who are a very talented bunch of musicians. Former Yes singer Benoit David was once their frontman.Prog is not really my thing but I do like listening to these guys.

I was row 2 so a decent enough view. She has loads of great tunes indeed, and I liked all her new tracks. I got a CD album and ticket signed after - she said her new album is available to order, but I couldn't see it on her website.

Day One of Aftershock, Sacramento.
Full sets: Halestorm, grandson, Signs of the Swarm, Sevendust
Part sets: Slayer, Pantera, Insane Clown Posse, Orgy, Better Lovers, Till Lindemann, Static-X.
Great day. Halestorm and grandson my favourite shows, Till Lindemann was nucking futs. I thought Rammstein were weird but it seems like they were holding him back. The background video for one part was vaginas lip synching to his golden shower song.

Off to see Dave Gilmour this evening, he of the towering guitar solos and of course Pink Floyd fame.
Must admit, I'm almost trembling with excitement!

Second day aftershock.
Full sets: Dead Poet Society, The Warning, Slipknot, Architects, Evanescence, Five Finger Death Punch.
Partial sets: DRUGS, Poppy, Highly Suspect, Dropkick Murphys, We Came as Romans, Rise Against.
Top 3 fun sets: Architects (by some distance), 5FPD (way better than I expected) then probably The Warning, but tough to pick.
Someone decided to launch a crowdsurfer into my skull with no warning between two songs though and that fucked me up for a bit 😢 I'd just pushed about 15 crowdsurfers over me too, and I was taking a breather

I'll have to listen on Spotify because they're playing the same time as Jinjer... And I'm gonna go support the Ukrainian band with the flag I got from a Ukrainian brigade. Maiden did great, Bruce's voice sounded possibly better than when I saw them on the Book of Souls tour. It was the Future Past setlist with some old songs I'd never heard live before. An 11 minute number from Senjutsu that was the only drag for me. Was a bit too much. Slayer also sounded good but I never got into them. A bit too thrashy for me, but we skipped the end and got an Uber back way faster plus sleep for marathon friday 👍 the slayer fans I spoke to said it was a top show though. Was so happy for them to see what they wanted. Slipknot played some old album. I didn't recognise it but a ton of women near me were losing their shit in a good way. Was really nice to see.

Third day aftershock
Full sets: Iron Maiden, Lorna Shore, Whitechapel, Kublai Khan TX.
Partial sets: Sleeping with Sirens, High Vis.
My favourite: LORNA FREAKING SHORE, Iron Maiden, Whitechapel.
Lorna Shore was fucking magic with a crowd and pit that was proper into it. Beautiful experience. I'm not a hardcore/punk guy but High Vis were fun. I didn't get Kublai Khan at all but apparently tons and tons of people love them, it packed out for being early in the day.

Lauren Hill and Fugees was very disappointing. No support band - just DJs. Lauren Hill was 40 minutes late onstage, with the DJ regularly saying "she'll be here in a few minutes..."
So Lauren Hill's set was cut massively short, and the Fugees set was shorter too.
Apart from the vocals (especially brilliant to hear Hill and Wyclef Jean rapping - Hill is super talented, and I'd love to hear what kind of album she'd release now), the sound was poor. A big shame as I counted 14 musicians onstage. It was great hearing a whole stadium singing along to Killing Me Softly, but other than that, it was the worst gig of the year. I left before the last song, which I've never done at a gig before, though I did have a 10k race this morning that was on my mind.
Co-Op Live still seems a bit pants even apart from the sound. It took a while to get in, and the big screens kept cutting out.

Slipknot’s latest tour is a based solely on their First self titled album which is having its 25th year anniversary., Not a bad album but must fans prefer the second album Iowa. Sounds like an amazing festival besides.

Watched Pretty Green (Jam tribute band) and Pork Pie at the Sugarmill on Friday.
Not a massive Jam fan but PG were excellent.
Pork Pie are an 8 piece Scottish ska band that did covers of Madness, Bad Manners, Dexys, Bob Marley and a few others, I thought they were superb and I'd definitely like to see them again, they had the (pretty packed) place bouncing, drank far more than I should have 🤔

Final day aftershock.
Full sets: Jinjer, Badflower, Nothing More, Shadows Fall, Disturbed
Partial sets: Motley Crue, Falling in Reverse, Tom Morello.
Most fun: Jinjer, Nothing More, Tom Morello. I was hugely surprised with how good Nothing More were.
Turns out I was injured during Lorna Shore so the medics put me in a sling which cramped the final day a bit but still... Fucking fantastic show. Really good job by the organisers and a really positive crowd 👏

Someone uploaded the full Lorna Shore show. 21m20s shows the crowdsurfer situation the madlad kept recording through. Some of my favourite bits included people trying to join in with the "goblin" noises (6m20s), crowd singalong to an emotional ballad (28m30s) and the whole ending, where they wound the set down from the previous absolute crescendo (~41m25s to end).

Never heard of this band so will have a watch They're definitely not accessible 😁 it's been a journey for my wife and I to get into them but so worthwhile. The first song in the vid was a showcase for the new singer's ridiculous range- I didn't really like it at first. I first got into their more melodic songs like the one beginning 18m30s. Or the three-part masterpiece beginning 24m45s... I don't expect anyone to get into them based on my recommendation, but anyone who does will be thankful!

Spent £50 on 3 beers over 4 days inside, some people blew 10x as much. At least they were 9% and pretty tasty.

Took my Big Sis to see Squeeze last night at the Regent Theatre. Not really my thing but they’ve a great back catalogue of songs and classic singles. A near packed out venue, saw Squeeze in excellent form and bang out old favourites, a new song, and intriguingly material from 1974 that they are now fashioning into an album. The regent is a lovely venue with excellent sight lines and comfort compared to similar venues, I didn’t really feel mugged off at being near the back. Everybody was having a great time, and you have to take your hat off to the music of Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook. I think they’ve a Rolling Stones like talent to do a bit of a rocker, a beautiful Ballard and everything inbetween. Impressed.

Pork Pie sound a lot better than The Melbourne “Ska” (my quotes) Orchestra who I saw in Cairns a few months ago. They played “A Message to you Rudi” then no more Ska!

The missus has some professional licences which might take a while to come round. I'm interested in trying again. Never used to do it for me, but your relentless propaganda has made me curious. 😉
