Done two gigs in one night this evening down in that London. First was Antipodean psyche exponents Pond (Tame Impala side project) at Electric Ballroom Camden, then Uber'd it across town (on the promoter's expense account, obvs) to catch Stephen Fretwell in the sumptuous setting of St. Magdalen Church in North London. Pond were ace but the what a pleasant surprise Fretwell turned out being. Didn't really know much of him other than that the theme to 'Gavin & Stacey' is one of his tunes, plus solo acoustic singer songwriters are not really my bag (give me Orbital, Underworld, Depeche Mode and/or New Order any day over an earnest noodler). That said however, his performance was truly mesmeric - to pull that off in front of 300+ people and have them sat beguiled in silence anticipating every note and lyrical vignette, just as one self-deprecating bloke with a battered acoustic guitar, was really something to behold. Hat's off to you Mr Fretwell - you've gained a new fan tonight 👍 Just realised Pond were at Manc Academy tonight, would have gone to that if I'd have known/remembered. Was Kevin Parker at the side of the stage?

Liam Gallagher @ Knebworth. Superb. Kasabian supporting were also very good Do you feel Kasabian are Kasabian without Tom Meighan ? I'm not feeling them at all and glad that Tom is now touring himself. I'm not a big Kasabian fan but thought the the new bloke singing was pretty good, got the crowd going and wasn't a bad front man.

Noel Gallagher at Cannock was very good, albeit a picnic chair audience, took wife and kids and NG on good form, I don't dislike the HF Birds stuff and first half was all that. He's very self deprecating and banter was good , slagged off Stoke, some footy talk, ripping piss out of the bucket hats on show and a sly dig at "bet you got that at Knebworth" to one guy down front. And then an 8-9 run of Oasis to end, sound was bang on too so thoroughly enjoyed. And my two girls loved it, bit of a "can't believe we're seeing Oasis songs sung by one of them" . Funny vibe as had to explain to youngest why you won't get some of the more "Liam songs" but she clicked to it. And home by 1115,can't argue with that . Day off today and thank god for that , everything bloody hurts lol I thought he was spot on when I went to see him Wednesday, almost forgave him for his Stoke comment lol

Robbie Williams @ vale park, despite not being a fan (honest!) I thought I’d give it a go in the name of local heritage and he didn’t disappoint. Lots of local references in between songs (Bozlem, Tunstall, the Vale, the red lion, Shelley’s etc) and didn’t display the usual arrogance, I think he knows Stokies don’t appreciate arrogance so he kept it real - nice one!! 👍🏻👏🏻 I saw a video of him covering Don't Look Back in Anger. It looked like he was doing a Liam impression - pretty funny given Noel sang that one. It sounded good anyway!. I'm not really a fan either but bought his debut album back in the day and was tempted to go until other plans came up that night. I like Pond and never knew they were a Tame Impala side project. A case of the side project being better than the main band then! I might've saw them last night if it wasn't for Bob Mould's rescheduled gig.

The Courettes - crazily energetic real-life couple and 60s garage rock throwback. Unbelievable to have that energy and looking so fresh - they said it was their 15th straight gig in the UK, and that followed straight on from mainland Europe. Support band Thee Windom Earles were good too - sort of like speed garage rock, with the pace barely slowing and possibly influenced by The Cramps. Fun. Bob Mould was good at The Sugarmill. Relentless at times with barely a break between songs, so it was good when someone presented Bob with a Bob 'action figure' between tracks. Bob looked delighted, and that was a great moment. My highlights were the Sugar tracks and Voices in My Head, one of my favourite solo tracks of his. For any Husker Du fans reading, Greg Norton is touring with a new band called UltraBomb who sound pretty good based on their first 3 singles, and a Husker Du throwback at times. It was when he formed Sugar and released Copper Blue that got me hooked into Bob Mould. I think i saw him 4 times when he toured the UK with the album 30 years ago Two of the first bands I got into, Feeder and Superdrag, cited Husker Du and Bob Mould as an influence. So that's how I got into him. I was gutted to miss Copper Blue played in full in London a few years ago, but it clashed with British Sea Power playing Open Season in full. A tough choice, but the BSP gig was great. I wore a Superdrag t-shirt last night, and Superdrag were played before Mould came on! I'd only heard Superdrag once in public before, and that was John Peel playing them 20+ years ago. Dunno if Mould had a hand in the playlist. I was going to ask him after the gig, but he didn't come out (although I still managed to get my ticket signed by him).

I might've saw them last night if it wasn't for Bob Mould's rescheduled gig. Not so much a side project but both bands share multiple members. In answer to @ll Cool Daves's earlier query - Kevin Parker was indeed there, looked as though he was merely in attendance as a spectator though as opposed to being actively involved in show 👍

Elvis Costello at Manchester Opera House last week.
I've tended to like what I've heard of his work over the years, and respected him as an artist, but have certainly never been a fan, and in fact I've only ever listened to a few of his many LPs and never seen him live.
But my interest was piqued when I recently read his 2016 autobiography Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink (all 600 plus pages of it). A fascinating read, he came across in the book as a thoughtful (though not always likeable) man with lots of interesting things to say, and the list of music industry greats he's worked with over the years is incredible.
Anyway I thought the gig was superb even though I'd never heard half the songs before. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of his singing voice (he's not far off 70 now), lots of interesting song arrangements with really good dynamics, quality musicianship, plenty of good banter, and on stage for well over 2 hours.
I now wish I'd seen him more times over the years!

Great piece Chester and glad you enjoyed..EC has been someone I've dipped in and out of over the years and only ever had tickets to see him once and an unfortunate incident meant was unable to go. Piqued my interest and will try and see him when time Allows

On the subject of older artists I implore anyone to see Glenn Hughes whilst they can, likely with the Dead Daisies, but if it's Black Country Communion do everything you can to get tickets.
His vocal range and general energy is astonishing compared to his contemporaries, I've seen him a good few times now and never been disappointed.

Around 12 years ago, a guy I knew got to film a private gig they did in London and I uploaded a couple of numbers (privately) to my Youtube account. Pretty amazing quality for an audience cam recording back then.

I'll try to see them more than once if they tour again. Wolves Civic in 2016 or 17 is the only time I've seen them. £80 a ticket then and I did it off the strength of a couple of tracks heard on the radio.

I quite fancy seeing them but at £80 a ticket, I think I'd give it a miss I will keep my memories of seeing Hughes play with Purple at Trentham As an aside, I see that Cardinal Black have now listed some dates for later this year and they're playing The Flowerpot in Derby in October. IMO, Chris Buck is already a better guitarist than Bonamassa, so very worth the £18 entry to catch them before they outgrow gigs of that size. Check them out

Chris Buck is outstanding. I've got a pair of Black Crowes tickets I'm going to move on I think. Manchester in September.

Chili Peppers are playing Old Trafford (cricket ground) on Wednesday. Whilst not a massive fan they'd be one to tick off the list and I'm only 15 minutes away, plus Thundercat is one of the supports. Thought there may be some cheap tickets knocking about but full price ones are 97 English pounds so even if I got them for half price it's still a fair whack. Might put some low ball offers on twickets and hope I get lucky.

Joe Walsh still amongst the best guitarists there is. but plenty of pissed up idiots who seemed they didn’t want to be there. Saw quite a few handcuffed and ejected. Spoils it for the rest

As a separate point. My tickets were £100 each with booking fee. I could t imagine taking the kids to see a top band. Probably looking £500 for the family with everything
Some of these bands are pricing the youngsters out of it
