I believe we need to play this long term. Even if we got promoted this season our squad isn't capable of staying in the PL. We need to see this as a proper rebuilding process. I honestly think we need to stick with Rowett for minimum 2-3 seasons to build from the ground up, similar to Pulis over a decade ago. I'd prefer to be patient and do the whole job properly and give the PL another good crack, rather than bouncing up and down between the leagues.

It's dour as fuck football.
But if it does get us up this season somehow, then it will have been worth it, for all the eyesore that it's been.
And what is the frigging obsession with comparing to Pulis? Jesus he left in '13, give it a bloody rest. Same as we should have done with Hughes and Lambertinho.

It's pretty clear that 10 years on, the owners hoped to emulate 'that' spirit paird with 'that' football and it would be enough to see us go up. Unfortunately Rowett has not and will not bring either of those things. Even 50 million later he's nowhere near. He's a dour, forgettable, charisma vacuum. His football only reflects this.

Rowett 15-20 years ago would have been the ideal manager to have come in to the side last year and begin a push for the top 6. The problem is, the ideas in the game have moved on. He just seems to have seen an Arsene Wenger team of that era and decided that was for him. He should still get us promoted, but it really would call for Thordarsson levels of behaviour from the board where once promotion is confirmed decide we're bringing someone else in. Ultimately, no one can justify not getting promoted with the amount of money spent, and the strength of the squad at his disposal. We haven't come down bankrupt like Leeds and Portsmouth did. We haven't had a penny pinching chairman like Villa did. We didn't have an on the cheap in every aspect charlatan like Newcastle United did. We came down with a midtable capable squad, with a chairman that invests and players good enough to play at the level who lost their way under Hughes. Yes, relegation is hard to take and losing the winning feeling can be difficult. But if an Argentinian bloke can rock up at Leeds, take a team that won just 4 games after Christmas and looked like they were saved by a good run earlier in the season alone and take them to promotion spots while barely even making use of one of his two at-cost signings (Bamford, the expensive one) why can't Gary Rowett with Stoke? Some Argentinian ? You dont know football outside of this country much do you ? Biesla is world class and the likes of Poc, Mourinho and Pep all have great things to say what he has taught them. But santy in stoke thinks hes a nobody.......

But santy in stoke thinks hes a nobody....... Woosh. My point flying right over your head there. Allow me to elaborate. Firstly, despite actually pressing the quote button in your post - you somehow misquoted me. I didn't say "Some Argentinian" implying I didn't know who he is, I said "An Argentinian" which isn't derogatory. It's a statement of fact. I was making a point about how a manager who is not English and therefore has several disadvantages before him because of this (such as the language, emphasised by his need of translators early on) followed then by no experience of having managed in this league before which again following the conventional thinking is another massive barrier because of how "tough" the league is with the additional factor of then also having a distinct disadvantage on the financial front in comparison to us finally put together with the fact that he too took over a side which was in a dejected and downtrodden state was comfortably out performing "championship specialist" Gary Rowett. Perhaps, just perhaps, I was making a point about how the problem isn't team morale. The problem isn't championship know-how. The problem isn't raw ability of the squad. But perhaps rather the problem is with the person who is the manager. The best part is, you then go on to mention Mourinho as saying he has been taught by Bielsa. The two have never been at clubs at the same time to the best of my knowledge, and it takes less than 2 seconds to think of any incarnation of a Jose Mourinho team to realise that at no point as he ever attempted to emulate an approach similar to that of Bielsa. Perhaps you truly do have a level of knowledge that eclipses the many in football and know something the press don't and haven't reported on, but it seems more like you attempted to regurgitate something you read in a news article a few months back and forgot the exact details of.

I mean, seriously? Pulis' dross wasn't as bad as this was it? 2 shots on target, against that Ipswich defence, with the first one coming after 47 minutes. Pulis split the support down the middle whereas everyone seems to unanimously agree that Rowett is woeful. Are we talking about the same Pulis who took us up to the top flight after a quarter of a century and 13 different managers had failed to prevent us from washing around aimlessly and anonymously between the old divisions 2 and 3, that Pulis? The one who then kept us there for 5 seasons and delivered the only FA Cup Final in the 150 year history of the football club and our only ever victories in European competition. If you mean that Pulis, then yes, it's much worse. We hardly need a thread to debate the point you chump!

No. I stopped going under Pulis because I hated the football so much. If anyone doesn't like what Rowett is doing I suggest you do the same. Seriously why pay good money to do something you ddn't enjoy - that's just daft. Its called being a Stoke fan, I sat through that dirge......bored out of my skull (the 2 goals were actually well worked moves). The remainder of the game was as boring a game I have been to in a long, long time. His substitutions continue to baffle. The players he picks on the bench, and then his post-match interviews are just excuse-making that inevitably ends in him blaming anyone other than himself.

Aah, so you are firmly in the chesterfieldstokie school of thought - 'if you don't like this manager or the football he dishes out you can't possibly be a stoke supporter'. Even when confronted with one or more actual lifelong stoke fans, who don't like the manager and the results/football he is producing.

H Pulis took us to the promised land with a record transfer fee paid of just over 1 million quid for Ryan and Leon Cort. Sure inflation has got hold of things since then but not 18 fold as it would have to. I don't need to Google pre-Pulis Europe campaigns, I was there last time around. We won the home leg of a UEFA tie against FC Kaiserslautern 3-1 but went on to lose the away leg 4-0 and so lost the match and exited the competition at the first hurdle. If you want to call that a win then go for it, it didn't feel much like one.

Pulis had a clear plan. The team had a clear identity.
Sometimes it was bloody awful to watch and sometimes (rarely, but it did happen) the players managed to make it exciting (Fuller, Etherington, Pennant).
So far Rowett has spent lots of money building a team that struggles to get the ball forward and creates very, very few goal chances. We have no clear pattern of play.
Rowett's football is more muddled than Pulis'. It less effective than Pulis'; it has yet to be as mind-numbingly dull as the worst of Pulis; at the same time, it is yet to show the potential to be as exciting as Pulis' best could be.
Given the relative resources of both managers at similar stages of their Stoke tenures than I have to agree that this is worse than Pulis.

Pulis is history. Comparisons are irrelevant.
Rowett has yet to truly stamp his identity on the team, but a pattern and style is slowly emerging, helped by a fully fit Ince and a free from injury Clucas. Yes, it can be a hard watch, but we are starting to control games and an unbeaten 8 game run is not to be sniffed at. We will see if it holds up to games versus Villa, Brum and Leeds over the next month, but we are no doubt visible in the rear view mirrors of the top 6 and I am sure they are starting to take notice. We have a transfer window coming up next month too, where the owners will most likely be prepared to back the manager if he feels there are players available at the right price that can add to the squad.
After the mess Rowett found at the club in the summer, which probably even surprised him as to its magnitude, I am giving him the benefit of the doubt for now, and not measuring him against a manager who left the club five years ago.
