Because we're a centre half and a right back away from being a decent team. Beginning to wonder if you need to add a keeper to that list. Semi thought that for a while now.

Signing a player on the basis of one good performance against us? That went well with Imbula.

Signing a player on the basis of one good performance against us? That went well with Imbula. I think most people would expect us to do a lot more research than we did with Imbula. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with looking further at a defender who impressed against us. Despite our obvious defensive problems we have been scoring plenty of goals in recent games - general we have given defenders a decent game - except from dead ball situations. We'd be foolish not to look closely at young defender who stands out in a game against us. By your logic we should not sign a Championship player this season - unless he performs badly against us?

He's playing in a system that has two banks of four and sat on the edge of their own box. We've been here and done that ourselves, so will know the pitfalls.
What would he be like tonight, sat on the halfway line for 45 minutes, being able to switch off for 90% of the time and having to switch on for the other 10%?
It's a whole different ball game.

Because we're a centre half and a right back away from being a decent team. Shocking really as we have 3 right backs at the club. God knows what's happened to Bauer, one of out better players last season. No-one can tell me he's worse than Martina.

Looked strong, quick and self confident. Certainly one to follow and consider to put in a bid for in January.

It’s probably his cup final game though. That won’t stop Cartwright checking if he is one of his boys and then throwing a massive fee at an average player so he gets his cut. Not even close. He has just been brought into the Nigeria national team so it’s clear he is something special that will be moving on to bigger things than Rotherham or Stoke on the future. Also he isn’t even a Centre Back, he’s only in there because of injuries, he’s actually a Defensive Mid who happens to be damn good in defence too.

Checked the Rotherham fan site and he's been voted their MOTM in 4 of their 10 league games this season (including today's game). He's also a graduate of the Arsenal youth system.

He was a CB with the Arsenal youth team and reserves, and joined Rotherham as a CB but was played at DM when they were shorthanded and he apparent excelled there. He's now back at CB (apparently on account of injuries as you pointed out), but their fans think he's both their best CB and their best DM.

We've made enough knee-jerk signings.
Let's see if he can consistently perform before we throw £18m at Rotherham.

Agree with the sentiment, I'd personally rather go for Chris Mepham but we do need a new, young centre back core. Ajayi was defending very very deep and in a very limited playing capacity, completely different from what would be expected if he came here. That's why we'd need someone a bit more comfortable on the ball to link with Woods. Mepham fits that bill IMO.

We need sign a few Staniuk/young Huth/Shawcross centre backs to bully the opposition instead of lumbering, arthritic derelicts

That's a good argument to be fair. I mentioned John Egan in January and the summer. He's a strong centre half used to playing a high line at Brentford. He can play a bit too. The irony is he's gone to Sheffield United who play a deeper line and more of a counter attacking style and I'm not sure that really suits him. I think he went for 4M in the end. Bargain.

Lol, He was very good mate but even so it would be good to think we have staff to follow the progress of the lad & others who impress live at their future games until we are sure it wasn't a flash in the pan. A bit of old fashioned scouting might save a few dissasters. I'd hope we had learned something after chucking 18m down the toilet on the back of a pre season friendly And he needs a pulis style DNA test

Fair enough, it may only be Rotherham but to dominate that opinion with fans is quite impressive. He’ll be moving on to much bigger things soon enough. I think his awareness of what was around him was what made him a cut above anyone else on the pitch. He wasn’t at fault for the first as Berahino’s movement in front of him gave him no choice but to drop and no one tracked Ince, while he wasn’t the one meant to be tighter to Bojan either. All in all he was excellent for a defence that conceded only 2, it would have been 6/7 with Williams instead of him.

It wouldn't be £18m Be surprised if it was more than £6m + His wages will be very low. Yes we shouldn't make any knee jerk signings however we absolutely have to sign a younger decent centre back.

Apparently Liam Lawrence on the radio stoke commentary said he was.normally a weak link for Rotherham! Seemed to have more mobility than any of our centre backs have managed for some time. I guess every centre back can have a good game every now and then......just wish ours would.

That was the original point. Me saying the difference between nearly scoring a hat trick and not actually scoring was in response to the guy that replied to me.
