Well I’ve just watched the two episodes on BBC4 and I’ve no idea how I missed this at the time but Jesus it’s absolutely brilliant. The writing and characters are superb. Lots of laugh out loud it is superb, and as the series goes on a certain level of pathos creeps in alongside the laughs and really smashes you in the gut if you can find the boxet its worth buying as it just doesn't get shown all that often

The writing is truly superb. There's two scenes that I guarantee will make you emotional, the acting is of the highest level and the rollercoaster you get taken on is masterfully crafted.

Apart from how good it is, it's only 20 years ago but it's like a different world Smoking in pubs, cash everywhere, hardly any phones

I watched the first episode based on the recommendations here. I didn't think I was going to like it at first (it reminded me of The Royle Family, which I didn't get into), but now I'm looking forward to episode 2.

An absolute travesty the way it's been treated over the years. the bbc has a long history of destroying its programmes and treating its little comedy gems with disdain going back too the days when the world was in black and white they wiped recordings of shows some of which are now lost forever, classic dr who and dads army spring too mind there was a short lived comedy series starring Paul O'Grady running a liverpool bingo hall that has been wiped from the history books but even more recently with This Country which was very funny and well written they ignored it and shoved it out of the way and made no fanfare about it

I stumbled across This Country, and The Young Offenders (which I know isn't to everyone's taste), but both had enough about them and clearly made enough of an impact. Middle class commissioners don't get what the people in their bubble like, that's the problem. There's a piece of working class comedy on the guardian website and I'd argue that This Country was treated the same way because it's creators are rural working class. The same commissioners now fete them in the hope of reproducing another hit. The death of the BBC will be because of these people and their inability to evolve. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jan/06/the-guardian-view-on-working-class-comedy-welcome-back-early-doors

It was back in the day common practice for film makers not to keep recordings, tape was too expensive not to reuse. The Paul O'Grady comedy was rubbish, IMDb describe it as "cheesy...with predictable jokes and tired acting" This Country started on BBC3, after great reviews was promoted to BBC2 and won many awards. Hardly ignored and shoved out of the way.

They did a stage show a few years back, it is perfect though and ends series two really well

They did a stage show a few years back, it is perfect though and ends series two really well Early Doors was a masterpiece, but I'm glad it ended when it did. If they ran a college course on how to produce great sitcoms, the 'two series' rule would be Lesson One. A few might have got away with stretching it a little bit further, but IMHO some initially great shows were ruined by milking the joke to death. I'm not sure how well a 'Phil and Nige' spin-off would work either. It didn't go all that well for Max and Paddy. To the regiment!

I'd have like to see them try, I always saw The Grapes as likely what The Feathers would have been if you'd seen the pub mentioned in The Royle Family. The Cash/Aherne cinematic universe. It's interesting how fondly the experience of acting on is remembered. Maxine Peake says she begged to be included in series 2.
