I think it was at Chelsea and we won 1-0 in front of about 60,000 in the then second division, now the Championship. Very sad news. The only time I saw Jimmy was at that game against Chelsea which was on the 11 th of May 1963 and the attendance was 66,199. That was the season when due to bad weather our last game was on December the 26 th 1962 and we didn't play a league game until the 2 nd of March 1963. The original fixture was due to be played on January the 12 th 1963. I've still got the programme for the game and according to the programme which cost 6 old pennies our team was O'Neil , Asprey , Allen , Clamp ,Stuart , Skeels , Matthews , Viollet , Mudie , McIlroy and Ratcliffe. In those days the Chelsea ground was also a dog racing track and had only one stand. We won that game 1-0 with a goal from Jimmy McIlroy. Unfortunately I was at the other end of the ground and didn't see the goal clearly. I was 15 at the time and going to the game was a welcome relief from studying for my O' level exams. It was the first time I ever went to London on my own and I caught the early morning train from Devizes changing at Patney and Chirton junction and Newbury. On the return journey I got off at Pans Lane Halt as it was nearest to where I lived. ( Train buffs might be interested in those names from the past ) 70!... can anybody beat that or are you the oatcakes senior regular ?

I'm 72 and Old Stokie has a good few years head start on me. Monica (Surrey Stokie) Hartland's age is a state secret - but she asked me to be her toy boy once so she must be getting on a bit!

A really really good player. As with a lot of Waddos signings probably past his best when he signed but never the less gave a great service

Jimmy McIlroy was part of the first Stoke team I can remember watching.
I probably wasn't old enough to appreciate him properly but even at 5 or 6 I knew he had a bit of style about him.
RIP

What a wonderful player Jimmy was, helped Burnley to win the old 1st Division Championship then fell foul of Bob Lord the Chairman. Waddo signed him in an instance, and caused an uproar with the Burnley faithful ! His debut is well documented after the thrashing at Norwich City, however my two favourite memories of him was scoring the winner at Chelsea in 1963 then 7 days later that majestic defence splitting ball for Stan to score the decider against Luton to clinch promotion back to Division one. There is NO joy in getting old, however memories can be very rewarding!! RIP Jimmy.

I didn't see him play that often, but I did see him play for us in my very FIRST trip to the Victoria Ground, and I was hooked.
RIP sir

Wizard. I can see that pass from Jimmy and Stan darting in from the wing and slotting it past the Luton keeper in front of the Boothen as if it was yesterday. Great player for Burnley and for us.

David Y.... It’s amazing how things stay in your mind, the pitch was like a swamp but Stan glided over the suface to round ex England keeper Ron Baynham. Somewhere I have a Sentinel b/w photograph of the Stoke team surrounding Stan celebrating that wonderful goal.

My very 1st Stoke idol but my undying memory of Jimmy was missing a last minute penalty v Middlesborough at home late in the season run in at home when we were losing 1-0 and I thought we had blown our chances of promotion, but he was a truly great player

Strange, but my abiding memory of Jimmy is also missing a penalty, when the ball did not reach the goal-line as he tried to roll it in having sent the keeper the wrong way!! Am I dreaming this? - still was a great player though

Like many others I ran on the mud bath of a pitch at the end of that game - and got a right bollocking from my mum when I got home for getting mud inside my shoes - it was like a quagmire by the time a few thousand Stokies churned it up.

Here you are you owd gits! DB 56 & 11/12ths! For Stan's goal that's a peach of a pass from Jimmy Mac. Also, the run Stan makes past their full back, he leaves him for dead, when you think that Stan was 48 then, that's astonishing to see. Thanks for posting the video, brilliant.
