Retrospective bans are utterly pointless really, it doesn't punish anybody. Gallagher might get a three game ban but Preston will just replace him in the line-up for those three games. If you are going to have retrospective bans properly then perhaps we should introduce a system where that player is not just suspended for the return fixture against that team but that the offending team is also a man down like they should have been in the original match. Knowing that off the ball incidents could be punishable like that could probably stop incidents like yesterday. I like that idea. As it stands now a ban for Gallagher, however many games it is for, will be of no benefit to us, or make up for him scoring one and assisting with a second when he shouldn't have been on the pitch. Making the offending team play with ten men in the return fixture may also make managers take more responsibility for controlling and disciplining their players rather than trying to defend the indefensible. Absolutely agree i think Neil's attempt at trying to justify it with what goes round comes round comment made it all the more galling. Then to say Crouch was lucky as the ball just hit the back of his head is an insult to Crouch and those watching. I remember Neil when at Norwich being an ungracious twat i see some things haven't changed.Still bitter because he ultimately failed there.

So are you saying there is no retrospective ban to be had in the Championship? Does it only apply to the PL? No,not saying that exactly however the media furore won't be) isn't there so no pressure in authorities to act. It doesn't work like that. If the FA become aware of an incident, which they obviously will in this case, they will look at it and if they decide there is a case to answer, it will go to a commission.

But if someone wants to make sure, email them a link to the incident.

I think they should tweak the retrospective ban rule. The player should receive the normal 1 - 3 match ban, but that player should also be banned from playing the next game against the team he committed the foul against (regardless of who he plays for - e.g. if that player got transferred). That ban would be enforceable for one calendar year after which the ban lapses. In this case, it would ensure that we (who should have benefited from his sending off) would at least know he would be banned for the return fixture. The main problem with this idea would be keeping track of who is banned against whom and making sure there is no confusion if two bans overlap. Shouldn’t be that hard though. Add in when he plays against the team he committed the offence against, that team then plays the remainder of the game with 1 less player from the time of the incident?

What do you do when you are playing teams for the 2nd time - basically post Xmas? It carries over to the next season. If either side gets relegated or promoted, we'll hey, they got away with one but it's a damn sight more of a deterrent than we've got now. I don't for a second have the remotest expectation that it would get introduced but (as I said) I love the idea in principle.

Definite red.

I've just watched the highlights and I'm sure it was Gallagher rolling round in their box claiming Crouchie had elbowed him in the face when he scored. Priceless. Don't remember him being such a twat when he played for us.

It was a definite red but lets not get all precious about it. Huth for instance did the same thing to Senderos and Upson to name but two and no one on here labelled him a fucking thug, moreover they would have him back even now. Apart from the elbow all Gallagher was doing was what Walters used to do and get under the oppositions skin, winding them up. It almost worked.

I agree but I would go even further. the game was 0-0 at the time of the incident so in all probability we should have gone on to win all 3 points. how about a 3 match ban[for the assault]and the result scrubbed and the game awarded to the victims 3-0 this would stop assaults like this overnight. this was no accident I was shocked as I didn't think he was like that

Should have been the one getting pepper sprayed, not the innocent children in the concourse.
Utter cunt rag, if I did that I’d be arrested and in court before my feet touched the ground.
But he’s ‘not that type of guy’ so it basically didn’t happen.

Disgrace - if that's Ryan (yes, he'd have arrived 15 minutes later and Allen would be gone) BUT it's a straight red.

If he does get a ban it will help us as it will send a message to the teams that it's not OK to take a swipe at our players. It was very poor and absolutely should be punished especially as the ref said he did not see it.. Would help us more if the fucking refs were up to the challenge of actually reffing a game properly and fairly

Has the FA made any comment about this assault yet ? Definite red without question.
It'll be an absolute disgrace if he doesn't get a retrospective 3 game ban for it.
