Who really cares about this match. Italia 90 I have no idea who we played and I think the players weren't bothered as we lost. linekar said the other day that it is the most horrible game of football he's played He was marked out of the game completely by Vierchowod and barely got a kick.

If Southgate starts Pickford and not Butland it's one hell of a thumping 25 yard half volley of an own goal.

So are the stories that he wasn't injured but on the sauce true. Or are those just fake news Firstly, you are correct in saying Greaves only scored 16 goals in the 65/66 season. What you failed to mention is he only played 31 games. Secondly, his form for England had not been poor. England played four friendlies in 1966 leading up to the World Cup, winning them all. Greaves scored 5 of the 11 goals scored. Thirdly, Greaves received 14 stiches in his shin after the final group game against France, so missed the quarter-final and the semi-final due to his injury. Greaves was fit to play in the final but Ramsey opted against changing a winning team. Greaves did only play 31 games but a fact everyone seems to forget is he was rushed back far too early after 3 months out with hepatitis as spurs were struggling in mid table, similar to lineker in euro 88

The 1978 one was Brazil v Italy and had one of the great world cup goals in it. Can't remember who scored it though. Nelinho perhaps?

I think we are going to loose but I could be surprised, not really that bothered now. Enjoyed the tournament as a whole though. Its time to focus on the mighty potters.

It's experience at the end of the day, meaningful or not it's still a World Cup fixture and it's a good thing to give as many players as possible the experience to taste it surely?!

I imagine linekar was getting bullied in the game and didn't have the interest to do anything about it

Lineker has faint hopes of getting the golden boot for the second time but Vierchowod was known at the time for being a superb man marker, albeit somewhat uncompromising.

Shame really as it would of been nice for every player to have been on the pitch in some capacity so everybody who contributed could take the rightful applause and I’ll bet Tottenham are ecstatic Trippier is bring risked ....oh well cmon England all the same

He was clearly pretty well injured in the semi, why even risk that? They did the same with Alli who never looked fit after that first game. And out of everyone in the squad TAA would probably benefit the most from playing in this game.

I'd be up for a medal.

For a player like Kane (and Alli, Trippier, Dier) who's never going to win any substantial silverware with Spurs, this match is the perfect opportunity to at least come away from the worlds with a medal, like he's going to show this to his grandson and say I was somebody once. Of course he's going away with a boot too unless M'bappe or Mandzukic go mad with goals in the final.

Maybes yeah and I can see that side of it but it’s not the olympics it’s a meaningless match few remember If Trippier played for Stoke and this was the final then yeah play him but I’d be fuming to be risking him in this fixture It’s in reality a friendly so it’s wholesale changes for me

I’m not disagreeing with you in all honesty ....it’s just I see it as a great chance for every single player in the squad to have been a full part in it all Surely that would of been a fantastic gesture by Southgate ( whose been superb ) to reward all his players ? There’s some fantastic players in that second string

I'd be thoroughly fucked off if I was Butland... Two nothing games and not even a minute of time on the pitch.
Makes Southgates comments Pre tournament look like utter horse shit

Bloody hell! My glass is usually half empty, but you need a new glass. I nearly added that we had a qualifying group which was so benign it was almost laughable. Basically we got to the World Cup semis playing one half decent side which was Belgium to whom we lost and even that didn't matter! Before the tournament if I told you we were going to lose in the semi-final to the team that looked the best team after the group’s stages, would you have taken it? I know I would. We improved with each game until we met Croatia when we looked tired. Nobody expected us to get very far so we exceeded expectations. Unfortunately, our our hopes went up after we reached the semis and were dashed when we faced a better team. Even then we nearly pulled it off because we were only 60 seconds from playing in the final. I am very satisfied with our performance even if we sumbled in the home stretch. This England team has a spirit not seen in a long time. They are young and let’s not forget that the long-term goal of the FA is to build for 2022. I’d say we’ve built a very firm foundation.

Kane has to play to ensure he’s the first English player to win the Golden Boot in 32 years. I can’t see Lukaku scoring four.
