I tend to turn on just a few minutes before kick off and turn off a couple of minutes after kick off. I think most sports are over analysed these days. F1 is probably the worst for this. They are still talking about an hour and a half after the race has finished.

The experience of watching football would be greatly enhanced by the absence of all commentators and so-called pundits. I'm sure the BBC Red button did a thing where you could watch the game but just listen to the game/atmosphere.

I really can't stand him or Glenn Hoddle. If they're commentating, the match is on with the sound off. Surprised more haven't commented on Hoddle ........... awful!

I thought Guy Mowbray and Danny Murphy mad a good team yesterday.
I've always liked Mowbray since he did the MOTD commentary on our first ever Premier League win. "Mamady Sidibe.... you always knew this was going to be Stoke City's day" (or something like that)
Danny Murphy has that thing I love about Mark Lawrenson. Like he's being forced to watch the game against his better judgement. Nicely downbeat. If it's shit, he'll say so. It's a good antidote to all the hype.
As for the worst, while I can't be doing with "Wrighty", Hoddle or the most scripted man on earth, Jonathan Pearce, nothing gets close to the utter clusterfuck that is the Tyldesley/Townsend double act.

I prefer the BBC generally but Ally McCoist has been my favourite co-commentator, great knowledge and enthusiasm for the game whilst also throwing in some non-football cultured thoughts.

They both play the game don't they?! So... they both win in my book. As someone who doesn't have Sky I'm just glad it's still on terrestrial TV.
Tbh, I kind of enjoy arguing with the shit co/commentators, it's a nice hobby I have. Martin Keown is beyond terrible for example but at the same time it's kind of funny listening to the shit he comes out with.

I find that it’s quite common for pundits to do these things:
- forget the point they were trying to make halfway through a sentence
- contradict themselves
- contradict themselves in the same sentence
- repeat what the other pundit said a moment ago
They sometimes make a good point. Terry Butcher pointed out that smaller (on average) teams will leave two or three of their players on the halfway line on corners to even up the average height in the box and give themselves a better chance of defending it. I was so shocked that a pundit made an insightful comment I nearly fell over.

the only thing worse than bad commentary is dickheads going on twitter to comment on how bad the commentary is. put your phone down and watch the game ffs and the only thing worse than that is these paper thin excuse for newspaper articles, recyling irrelevant twitter bullshit like it matters to anyone

BBC so much better for me that montage pre Panama with Joy Division Day of the Lords over it had the hairs on the back of neck bristling the the post match piece in England V Belgium with World in Motion had me right back in 1990 brilliant The BBC has the very considerable advantage of being able to use your money to pay for what they do. As a public company operating in a highly regulated sector ITV has to watch it's pennies or it would be out of business. So it's no surprise that the BBC's coverage of most things trumps ITV's.

I prefer the BBC generally but Ally McCoist has been my favourite co-commentator, great knowledge and enthusiasm for the game whilst also throwing in some non-football cultured thoughts. McCoist and John Champion make an excellent pair, they've got the knowledge to "banter" ratio just right and they don't take themselves too seriously.....

I switch the pundits off as a general rule but if I walk out the room and keep the game on and come back too soon then I will watch them. Evra and Aluko have been dreadful. I like O'Neil's ramblings. And despite his cuntishness I thought Fabregas was ok too. Every time I've seen/listened to Aluko she's predicated, imho, your comment about her being 'a speedboat without a driver..' (in the footballing sense at least.) Granted she's a very intelligent operator in her 'normal' profession. I'm a fan of MON's internal monologues made loud too..😂

Prefer BBC overall cause of the no adverts but look out for how many times Linekar uses the word extraordinary, it's extraordinary. ITV better pundits, Keano and Evra the best. Fabregas on the BBC is as dull as dishwater.

Pat Nevin is my favourite BBC guy but he's only usually on the radio which I guess he is doing this world cup, but not really listened given the novelty of free to air televised football.

If it's a 3-3 thriller he ends up moaning about diving or refereeing instead of just enjoying the game, anything to sound like a miserable git.

Many years ago I used to write TV listing and previews for a large regional newspaper and was very proud of myself for getting 'analysis from lachrymose depressive Mark Lawrenson' past the subs and into print.

Just travelled home listening to Chris sutton commentate on the Iran Portugal game. I have not been entertained so much by a radio commentary for a long time, Sutton was hilarious and showed genuine excitement with the events of the game.
Brilliant radio, bravo radio 5.
