Deeside, we are off to Sorrento in July and Pompeii is obviously on our list of places to go. In your experience is it better to book trips when we get there or before we go do it online? Also did you use the trains at all , we are planning an overnighted in Rome. Sorry for all the questions just trying to get a few tips 👍😎

Also did you use the trains at all , we are planning an overnighted in Rome. Sorry for all the questions just trying to get a few tips 👍😎 No problem. We went on an organised tour so the trips were all included. It might be cheaper to book yourself when you get there but for places like Pompeii (and Herculaneum if you go there) I don't know if you would get a guided tour included. After our recent visit I'd definitely say you'd be better with a guide or you'll just wander around and not really know what you're looking at. It also depends how long you want to stay as the guide book shows four different timed tours, 2 hours, 4 hour, 5 hours and 7 hours. Even then you'll only scratch the surface. We stayed a couple of miles outside Sorrento and just caught the local bus in (1.3 euro return trip). Sorrento gets very busy and traffic is horrendous and really slow so even the hotels recommend against a taxi. Try and get to the Mount Vesuvius National Park, and go on the tour along the Amalfi coast - Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and loads of other lovely places and wonderful views. We went to Capri on a Sunday and it was quite busy but our guide said July and August are horrendous for crowds and the heat. The ferries are jam packed so I'd say it's best to go on an organised trip. Didn't use the trains but the locals said they're "usually" on time. Rome - where to start, so much to see - again we went on organised trip with a guide and a walking tour included.. Vatican, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, etc etc etc - you'll love it but it'll be rammed and hot ! Again traffic is horrendous. Sorry for the lengthy reply but we loved it - PM if you want any more info. Above all take plenty of euros (it's NOT cheap), and enjoy it !

Cracking, many thanks, we did a few hours in Rome last summer as a cruise stop, wasn’t anywhere near long enough hence why we are going back. All the places you mention are on our list too, thanks again.

She should team up with Roberts and Lipscomb. I'm sure the three of them together would be very educational.

I found it almost unbearable watching Prof Alice during her Historic Towns ("Tines") series, as she smiled through occasional innuendo and smut.

As for Bettany Hughes, what a lovely pair of ears! 👍 Same here about Italy - we visited Siena, Florence, Rome, Pisa, Lucca and Venice last year - absolutely brilliant but Venice was absolutely packed so not as enjoyable as the other places. Bettany - not bad for 51 is she !!

Bettany - not bad for 51 is she !! I agree with you about Venice, fascinating place but far too touristy. I remember paying a small fortune for a cappuccino in St Mark’s Square in 1994 🙁 If you and Mrs Dee want a more relaxing, romantic holiday, go to Lake Como... It’s beautiful! Bettany or Christina? Or both? 🤔😀

Just go to the booking office at the bus/ train station .I think they do one on Mondays and Wednesdays, Good value too by Italian standards.

If you are ever out there for a thermal spa break, try a little town called montegrotto terme, south west of Padova, a fantastic restaurant called Ristorante Villa Liviangior. I'm in Padova centre this time but have stayed there and also a small town called Piove di Sacco which is south east of Padova, my favourite restauarnt there was one of those that didn't have menu's, they just suggested the courses and asked what you wanted with it, and type of sauces etc. but it's recently been turned intoa fookin burger king !
