Personally, I don't see what the big deal is- the guy has his reasons for not wanting to wear a poppy; that's up to him, he's not trying to stop anyone else wearing one so I couldn't really care less. I'll continue to wear one every year, I always have done, but it doesn't affect my life one way or the other if someone else either wears one or doesn't. This- if he’s gonna help get us up. Sign him. Pace, power, passion - isn’t that what everybody on here has been crying out for? Some things are bigger than football, Just as James McClean is entitled to his own political views so are many many stoke supporters who have a strong opposite view to McClean. The troubles he talks about affected not only his countrymen but also our countrymen for many decades, some still living with the hurt just as he feels hurt over bloody Sunday. In short... no I do not want James McClean wearing a stoke shirt representing me, whether he is a good player or not. I hope the club respect the views of many stoke fans and realise some things in life are more important than pace and power. SAY NO TO McCLEAN.

Unfortunately, judging by some of the ill-educated, brainless and poorly researched bullshit that is in evidence on this, and other threads, about James McClean, the question of whether or not he is the right kind of player for an assault on the Championship is probably going to be secondary to his "political views". That's a shame.
I dearly wish that people on here would take the few minutes necessary to read up on James McClean before rushing to judgement. Whilst we're at it, it might also be useful to realise that it is possible, indeed normal, to be an Irish Republican (ie. to aspire to a united Ireland) without being a supporter of the IRA.
If there is evidence that McClean is indeed an IRA sympathiser, I am happy to stand corrected but, to date, I haven't seen any. What I have seen is a bloke, very much a product of his background and of his experience, who has a set of core principles that he is prepared to stand up for, a family man who gives liberally to charity, and who doesn't "suffer fools".
As a player, I can take him or leave him. He is certainly a trier, and runs all day. He can play anywhere down the left side, and gives good protection to the full-back. However, I hope we don't go for him because, judging by this and other threads, it would be more trouble than it's worth.
I can't help wondering if the lazy opinions aired on here would be quite as vitriolic if McClean was as good as, say, Mo Salah?

I agree with Clyde regarding Rondon, too. He's the type of striker we should be looking at.

What is the big deal? Wearing a poppy is a choice, not an obligation. He doesn't wear it, and has his reasons for doing so. It doesn't mean he disrespects this country at all. Doesn't forcing it upon people kind of defeat the object of what the poppy represents? Fighting for freedom. On another note, I wouldn't be against signing him, but his arrival wouldn't exactly get me excited. Not good enough if we are pushing for promotion. You should give your head a wobble , and go visit the war cemetery’s then you might change your opinion There you will find th people that fought and died for freedom of choice

I'm personally not bothered whether we sign James McClean (for footballing reasons) but I think the Royal British Legion's stance on the choice to wear a poppy is really important:
"The Legion will always defend the rights of individuals who choose not to wear a poppy, and we oppose those who attempt to coerce or criticise people who make this personal choice.
We are thankful for every poppy worn, every shop that allows poppy collections, and every employer that permits the poppy to be displayed - but we never insist upon these things. To do otherwise would be contrary to the spirit of Remembrance and all that the poppy stands for."

I'll continue to wear one every year, I always have done, but it doesn't affect my life one way or the other if someone else either wears one or doesn't. Agree entirely. People can honour those lost in all manner of ways. Some don't feel the need to wear a poppy to do so, some refuse to do so for their own reasons, and some absolutely will do. It is an individual choice and freedom, which should never be used to determine anything about others. The way in which this has gone over the last few years, where those who don't wear it are suddenly absolute scum, based on NO OTHER FACT WHATSOEVER, actually goes to validate his whole point about how politiced it has become. When people are required to wear one to prove they are not absolute cunts, it demonstrates facist behaviour, with the Royal British Legion themselves stating that they deplore the hatred and venom directed against those who are exercising nothing more than personal freedom of choice ans don't wear the poppy, as it goes against what those loved and lost were fighting against in the first place. For those who take up such a position against those who don't wear a poppy, YOU are part of the whole reason why many don't. Wear one if you wish, but under no circumstances at all think that you have the right to DICTATE and mandate others to do something just because you believe in it. He, or anybody else, has no obligation why he makes a free choice of not wearing it... None at all. Give me a choice of someone who exercises their personal freedom for their beliefs WITHOUT CAUSING ANY HARM to any other single person;or one who directs such venom and hatred against those, and i would stand side-by-side with the former every single time, whilst wearing my poppy in honour of my grandparents and great grandparents.

There are quite a few people from his own community here in Derry who think he is a prick,he states he is proud of where he comes from, but chose to play for the ROI instead of N/Ireland.
I don't want him at Stoke, not because of his believes, but because there are far better players for that price tag we could go for.

FC St Pauli finished 12th in their league didn't they, and they struggled to score a goal a game? How much game time did Verlinden get out there?

I wonder why they didn't give him any game time? Attitude? Injury? Not as good as we think? I find it difficult to work out why a club that struggles for goals wouldn't pick a young lad with uber talent that can create, when they themselves ripped us a new one with their reserve side in Pre Season?

You can't but it still becomes an issue. Look at when Walters declared his love for the Tories, he was slated for that. And with someone as high profile as Mclean, you know what you're getting. If he played badly for a consistent period which he's as likely to do as play then we know he'd get barracked by a good number of our fans. It's an entirely avoidable situation. More so as he is a pretty bollocks footballer.
