Yeah, I love the Cycling. Sagan is a beast. The classics have been great viewing. Will dip in and out of the Giro. Would love to see Thomas land a big one, not sure if he’s in this.

No Thomas this year in the sky team. Prefer the Giro to the tour I think although it's a close call.

interesting time trial today, a lot of complaining about the wind in the first hour or so.

I'd forgotten there was an existing Giro thread so I'd already posted the following on the TDF thread. - best just to continue on here now I reckon. --------------------------------------
The Giro d'Italia started today with a 15 km time trial around Palermo in Sicily. Great performance by Filippo Ganna of Ineos to take the first pink jersey, he's 22 seconds clear of second place, but another great performance by Geraint Thomas (only 23 seconds slower than Ganna) has G effectively top of the GC main contenders. Simon Yates also well in contention but Nibali and the others are all over a minute down on G already.
Miguel Angel Lopez of Astana is already out after crashing heavily and going through some barriers.
Should be a good race after a fairly lacklustre TDF.

Lopez wow!! Walked out of hospital though, could have been so much worse.
G has put himself in a decent position early doors.

Bad day at the office today for Geraint Thomas after crashing in the neutral zone. Still around 10kms to go in the fi al climb on Mount Etna and he's losing loads of time. After just day 3 the situation is so different for Ineos compared to the great performance in the opening day time trial.
Edit Thomas lost 11min 17 sec and must surely be considering pulling out now. Simon Yates lost 3min 46sec, leaving Kelderman, Nibali, Fuglsang, and Kruijswijk around 1 minute off the lead and just 30 seconds covering the 4 of them as the main GC contenders.

Fractured pelvis for Thomas, he's withdrawn this morning. Not a good day for Brits yesterday with Yates having a jour sans, and Geoghegan-Hart conceding a couple of minutes too.
Pretty crazy stage up Etna. More GC attacks on one climb than in the entire tour, although that stop-start sort of racing does mean that the attacks end up being too feeble to leave a mark. No idea what the rest of this Giro holds now.

A strange race yet again with no British interest in the GC anymore (have the British/Ineos years of dominance ended ?), and a very different looking top 10 after 5 stages.
1. Joâo Almeida (Por) Deceuninck – Quick-Step, in 17-06-23 2. Pello Bilbao (Esp) Bahrain-McLaren, at 43s 3. Wilco Kelderman (Ned) Team Sunweb, at 48 4. Harm Vanhoecke (Bel) Lotto-Soudal, at 59s 5. Vincenzo Nibali (Ita) Trek-Segafredo, at 1-01 6. Domenico Pozzovivo (Ita) NTT Pro Cycling, at 1-05 7. Jakob Fuglsang (Den) Astana, at 1-19 8. Steven Kruijswijk (Ned) Jumbo-Visma, at 1-21 9. Patrick Konrad (Aut) Bora-Hansgrohe, at 1-26 10. Rafał Majka (Pol) Bora-Hansgrohe, at 1-32

Great win for Dowsett in today's stage, long time for the breakaway to stay in front. Looks like the Peleton was saving itself for tomorrow's stage but still a good watch.
It definitely helped that Israel Start-up Nation had two in the breakaway but he went for it a long way from home.
After Yates dropping out with a positive Covid test this morning it was good to finally get some good news for UK cycling in the Giro
Stunning scenery on the coast road to Vieste as well, looks like a great place for a holiday if we ever get the chance again.

Yes I was really pleased for him to get the win after such a long sustained effort today. Bit of a shock to learn that Simon Yates had tested positive - hopefully he will recover quickly. I enjoy watching the TDF and some of the scenery is fabulous, but the Giro passes through some really lovely countryside as well. Italy is a beautiful country and we usually go on holiday there every year or every other year at most - this year we should have gone to Sicily but Covid put the stop to that. Tomorrow should be well worth watching.

Will the Giro actually finish this year ?
Mitchelton-Scott and Jumbo Visma have both withdrawn before stage 10 due to coronavirus. Steven Kruijswijk, Michael Matthews and 6 staff members of Jumbo-Visma tested positive during yesterday's rest day. Mitchelton-Scott had Simon Yates test positive last week, and now another 4 have also tested positive.

Giro into the third week and..........the Vuelta a Espana (shortened version) starts tomorrow. Dumoulin, Carapaz, Roglic, Froome, Chavez, Mas etc should make it an interesting and entertaining race. Some of the mountain stages look brutal. Can't see Froomey winning it in his last Grand Tour for Ineos before he leaves so perhaps Roglic can make amends for his TDF disappointment ?

Stage 1 of the Vuelta today. Last year's winner Primoz Roglic won with Carapaz second at 5 seconds and Dan Martin 3rd at 7 seconds. Some big time gaps to some of the pre-race favourites, with Dumoulin and Valverde at 51 seconds, Pinot at 9 mins 56 secs, Chris Froome in 72nd place at 11 mins 12 seconds.

Brilliant few stages during the past week.
Almeida had been in the pink jersey for about 15 days, then lost it to Wilko Kelderman, but his legs went during today's 20th stage and he lost significant time, so going into tomorrow's time trail final stage there are Jai Hindley of Sunweb and Tao Geoghan-Hart of Ineos tied in first place on exactly the same time - 85 hours 22 mins and 7 seconds ! If anyone saw today's stage Rohan Dennis put in the performance of the day, as he has done a few times in this year's Giro - inspired signing by Ineos. Hindley is in pink by a couple of tenths of a second and goes last in the time trial in what is being described as the best Giro for many years, but Geoghan-Hart is thought to be the better time triallist. Being immensely biased I'm hoping for a Geoghan-Hart/Ineos win !

Second grand tour in a row decided on a TT

Thursday's stage on the Stelvio was immense, good job I was off work to watch it live. Today's nerve wracking. Either the Ineos ds is confident that Tao can beat Hindley in the TT or Tao just didn't have the legs to attack today. Think it was probably clever to pinch the time bonus and gamble on the TT.
Hindley would be well deserved winner if he gets it but really rooting for TGH.
Moment of today was Dennis riding back up after the first Hindley attack

Oh aye, Vaughters' call for the giro to be cancelled at rest day 2 can go fuck themselves, as can the wanky rider protest yesterday.

Well done TGH and Ineos ! Superb ride in the TT gives him a 39 second victory over Hindley. Dave Brailsford was full of praise for the fantastic effort Rohan Dennis put in on the Stelvio and also again yesterday.
Incredible fact on Eurosport was that in 11 years since Sky/Ineos was formed this was their best Grand Tour performance - 7 stage wins, Young Rider, GC, and Team winners. When you consider some of the riders and team selections that they have had in previous Grand Tours it's more than a little surprising.
I think we've seen this year that it seems like there is a changing of the guard, with a lot of the older riders being blown away by the new generation of riders, Van Der Poel, Van Aert, Alaphilippe, TGH (is this a one off victory ?) Evenepoel, Almeida, Bernal, Carapaz, Adam Yates, Simon Yates etc etc .
Looking good for some exciting racing in the future.

It is quite interesting how for probably the first time Sky/Ineos were able to execute plan B with such flair given that they usually struggle once the team leader has left. Very much feels like a changing of the guard and it seems we are again starting to see a bit of a change in the style of GC rider. You'd argue the majority of the above are more than happy racing one day classics as they are climbing mountains. It'll be interesting to see if any of them are able to ride like they did this year when they head into races as favourites in 2021. So many fantastic talents would be great to get a more normal season next year sadly it looks like it'll stop start like this year. As for Tao it'll be Interesting not sure he's a Tier One GC rider yet but its certainly going to give Sky/Ineos a big headache next year as he will no doubt expect to go back to the Giro probably as leader with Thomas, Sivakov, Carapaz and Bernal all in the mix as well and then you've the likes of Dennis.

Looks like Ineos are getting their act together again. Stage 6 of the Vuelta yesterday (rest day today) and Richard Carapaz of Ineos is leading the GC by 18 seconds after a tough mountain finish. Britain's Hugh Carthy currently second, with Dan Martin in 3rd.
