On a free I am told. Would be a good signing if we are down or not. Get Walters back as well, let’s get the band back together. Give it a real go to come back up. Great news if we could field something like Grant Bauer Shawcross Huth Pieters Whelan Ndiaye Adam Walters Crouch Diouf we'd be well set for a promotion push and I'd actually like the team and want to watch it again. Are you on glue?

What a thoroughly depressing thread. We definitely need more character in the side but this 'lets get the old gang back together one more time' is for Hollywood not the championship.
If that side gets your motor running just buy a video player, some betamax videos of the glory days unzip and enjoy - just don't inflict the wobbly old wrinkles on the rest of us.

I understand the sentiment but thats exactly what it is, sentiment. I agree we need leaders, DNA, but we need a new era of Huth’s, Walters, Whelans, Fayes etc. We have done it before and due to the cock ups of the last two years we have to do it again. But lets move forwards not back. Sign the leaders of today not the past. It worked for Waddo! Yeah so did half a loaf is better than non. Stuck in the past.

Absolutely not - too slow, only going to get more injury prone.

Are you on glue? We,d have a solid defence, pace in the full backs, energy from Ndiaye in the middle combined with the champ knowhow of Whelan and the guile of Adam. Adam particularly I think will be a real asset in the champ, can see him bagging 10-15 goals. A from 2 of Diouf and crouch offers pace and aerial threat, with Super Jon in behind would be a menacing team in the champ. I'd certainly be keen to watch them tear up the champ. The only issue i foresee is we'd struggle once back in the prem

If Huth is going to come in to be a good influence on the dressing and younger players, whilst playing back up to Shawcross and Indi, whilst supporting a younger CB grow his way into the team, what’s the problem?
The Championship is a slog you need more than a first 11 and you need character. Here's a good idea, let’s spunk some of our limited budget on a CB to displace the current competent ones that will hopefully stay.
We started our last Championship promotion camapaign with Jody Craddock at CB FFS!!

Huth is not slow either. people are getting obsessed with pace. pace but shit is pointless. we didn't exactly have pace when we last came up. Lawrence was not quick, Gallagher was not quick, mama was not quicker etc.

Exactly, the people who slag them off and say they are too old have their head in the clouds thinking well be spending 100m on 5 or 6 players at 15m a pop. far more likely we will be sniffing around Ben Marshall and hoolihan

You're referring to Sir Stan I take it ?, jesus you are clutching at straws now, Sir Stan was one player, we had nine others to get the ball for him - you want 5 guys to do the running for ten ? gotta laugh on here sometimes...

John Terry is still a beast in the Championship. I think some of us are misunderstanding the drop in level there will be if we're relegated, where players like Huth & Walters are still top quality and as we know, you can't buy what they know about how to win at Stoke. It's a mentality we have lost big time. I would be all for them joining personally. Put Huth & Walters in a room with Wimmer, Berahino et al and see sparks fly. John Terry is at another level compared to Huth & Walters

Huth is 34 in August and hasn't played this season
Walters is 35 in September and has played 3 Premier League games this season
Whelan is 35 next january and is in and out of the Villa side.
If they'd never played for us before, we'd go nowhere near them.

As much as we all long for the good old days (Although they're not that long ago!) I really don't see the logic in wanting to pack our team with a bunch of old, past it players so that we can win promotion back to the Premier League & then find as we've got a squad filled with the same old, past it players everyone was wanting us to get rid of 5 years ago as they were old & past it!

i'd have Huth back here as a defence coach, not a player.
I'm a little shocked some people on here think the likes of NDiaye, BMI, Bauer, Allen, Pieters will still be around. They won't ... the moment we're relegated they'll have their agents on the phone engineering a move away.
A relegation is going to be catastrophic for the squad. It doesn't matter how nice we think players like Joe Allen are, they're tenacious and talented premier league footballers with short careers, they're not going to spend an unnecessary season in the championship with a dogshit manager when there are lots of other teams to choose from.

Whilst I am advocating a return to the old guard because I want to see them tear up the champ I do see that it is very short term. However I would counter that with do you really believe that this management group is going to be prepared to finance a long term plan and the size of the rebuild that is going to require.

It's worked for Juventus for a long time too. What we need is a blend of players, new and old, if we are doing the 'let's get promotion asap' thing. We don't need to look around for ideas from elsewhere for promotion, we have our own blueprint and it works. The same way that we got promoted will still work and for that, Huth & Walters would fit in very nicely indeed. This is all spoken from a relegation point of view.

If the club had anything about them they'd do some proper 'Moneyball' style research/scouting and find a 24 year old with the same character as Robert Huth.
