I'm a bit late to the party, but I've just got myself hooked on Detectorists. Well worth digging out the first 2 series, for some gentle, engaging and passionate comedy. Can't go wrong with McKenzie Crook and Toby Jones can you?
Great theme tune too.

The gentlest of gentle comedies and excellent for it.
Not sure if there will be another series given the ending of the last one (no spoilers), but I hope so.
I liked the theme song too. Good old English folk.

If you like the theme tune it's well worth a listen to Johnny Flynn. The album A Larum is superb. He was also the lead actor in the series Scrotal Recall which was excellent.

According to McKenzie Crook the 3rd series was the final one and he's got no plans to return to it in the future - unfortunately ! I absolutely loved it and was really sorry when it finished. I know he said he didn't want it to get stale but with such a gentle pace there doesn't need to be that much going on. Without giving spoilers for the end of the last series (for those who haven't seen it yet - shame on you !) there were lots of other little side stories going on that he could have easily developed over time - Andy's house, Lance & Toni's relationship, Kate living on Toni's barge, DMDC club activities, ongoing joke about Sheila's lemonade, etc etc !!
I just hope he has a rethink and writes at least one more series.

Great way to end if that was it. Would write more but don't want to spoil it for Richie. They say you should always leave them wanting more so I suppose that's what Crook has done. Fair enough.

I think it was the finest comedy to be shown on the BBC for over 20 years. The writing, acting and photography were superb. All the scenes were shot with a single camera which made the scenes more intimate and human. The final episode and closing scenes of Series 3 were absolutely brilliant and left me pining for more. Probably the most intellgent comedy series I have ever seen.

Looks like a re-run of series 3 starting on the Beeb next week ! Cheers for the heads up D. Listings say Beeb 2, Weds 2nd May 10pm. Seen Series 1 & 2 but missed Series 3 so I shall be looking forward to this. Truly one of the best comedies to come along for many a year. In the sea of dross on tv, occasionally there is a nugget like Detectorists.

Me and the missus watched this when it first came out and when the first season ended, I said to the wife, that's one of those once in a lifetime magical pieces of TV drama that will never be repeated. A standalone, single, perfect series, that will stand the test of time, which they of course, won't even dare to consider trying to do a follow up to ... and then incredibly, they did and it was even better than the original season and then they even did another (amazing) one!
If you've not seen it, then do yourself a favour ...

Looks like I missed a belter here (for whatever reason) and playing catch up. If repeats are to happen they'll have to be after I finish work at 10pm. I can but hope.

I enjoyed the third series but haven't got around to catching up with the first two. "Nice" seems like a negative way to describe something these days, but it is. It's a nice, enjoyable comedy. Sort of in the vein of Whitehouse and Mortimer Gone Fishing, which I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I do. That's a relaxing and enjoyable watch.

Yeah, well I suppose it’s not going to compete with Love Thy Neighbour hey Wag... Before my time really but I’ll take your word for it You should realise that you can't question superior posters about their superior comedy shows and I'm referring to comedy in the absolute loosest sense of the word

It's Coming Back " Detectorists is to make a surprise return after a five-year absence for a one-off 75 minute special. The feature-length episode about the exploits of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club will to air later this year, it was announced at the BBC Comedy Festival in Newcastle this afternoon." Great News. One of the best things that's been on telly for donkey's years. I hope they treat it gently. Detectorists Link

But sometimes feature length comedies lose some of their impact by being more drawn out. Hope it's not the case with this one which was great from start to finish.

We watched it recently and it’s so refreshing to see how ordinary folk can get on and should get on really, it’s not hard. Can’t wait for it now 👍👍
