EDIT: A big shout out for the Holy Inadequate pub Etruria Old Road, ST1 5PE, Stoke-on-Trent. Nobody is ever "passing" but if you're in the area, or looking for a no kids, no music, no Sat TV, no swearing kind of pub. Here it is. Excellent place for all things aley and they do some pork pies as well. Consistently wins CAMRA's pub of the Potteries or the Midlands or Pub Up My Street awards or whatever they are. Anyway, this place has won a shed load. Easily my favourite pub in Stoke. If anyone ever finds themselves in Stockport it's also worth visiting the Crown or the Magnet. Always a few tasty dark beers on.

Last time in it seemed more Zider than stout as a specialism. Good boozer though. Trip hazards.

Got a good one for you, in Tesco, in individual cans, it's called Oatmeal Stout, full of flavour, you can really taste the coffee/chocolate/oats it says on the tin. Lovely drink. Picked up some cans of Murphys and Mackensons, Murphys as bland as fuck, won't bother again, the Mackensons though was surprisingly good, really malty, definitely drink more of it. Also the one in Aldi, Spill the Beans Coffee Porter is ok. Tastes ok but a little thin on the body. Not as good as the Oatmeal but light years better than that bloody Murphys!

Got a good one for you, in Tesco, in individual cans, it's called Oatmeal Stout As a teenager in the mid 1960's living in Devizes in Wiltshire my special treat was oatmeal stout brewed in nearby Trowbridge. My usual alcoholic refreshment from my pocket money was rough cider at 11 old pennies a pint. Sadly in about 2000 the Ushers brewery was closed and the brewing equipment went to somewhere near Pyongyang in North Korea.

The Guinness Milk Stout in Tesco is nectar of the gods and the Guinness West Indies Porter isn't too far behind either.Thoroughly recommend the Saddlers Mud City Stout too.

In the US, they are aging stouts in bourbon barrels which have become quite popular with stout lovers......I can't get past IPA's......

A bottle or two of West Indies Guinness Porter {Co-op £1.50 ish} is where it's currently at. The Afro-Caribbean community have it with a drop of condensed milk in it, as a tummy settler after a scotch bonnet curried goat, Mon 🇯🇲 Used to work with a few West Indian lads and they were quite partial to a drop of imported dragon stout And they all put a drop of cola on the top Strange but it tasted excellent

This reminds me, while I'm back with the car in the holy city this week I can go up to the mother town to get some Titanic to take back home. They don't export sadly, so I'll take the chance of being back here in the car. A few Icebergs, stout and maybe some White Star.

Kees 11.5% bourbon barrel aged stout. £5.20 a half. My God! Just been on it this afternoon down Hopwater Cellar. Nectar of the gods. They've got a brandy barrel aged coming soon. I'll crawl over broken glass and remortgage my house for it.

I'll crawl over broken glass and remortgage my house for it. I love a big stout that’s aged in bourbon barrels. They’ve got a lot at Otters Tears in Burslem, including bottles (and cans) of this Kees one. I was in just before Christmas and picked up a big 750ml bottle of an imperial stout aged in Jack Daniels barrels, which went down an absolute treat with the Christmas pudding yesterday. This one. They have a different colour wax top for the different barrels that it’s aged in and he had quite a few variants at Otters Tears, including a rum one that I’m going back for.

Have to say, done a complete 180 degree turn on the Murphys, made the mistake of not chilling it and drinking it from the can-served ice cold, in a Guinness glass, its absolutely gorgeous, particularly the aroma. Far nicer than bog standard draught Guinness for sure. Had a Mocha Stout from Sainsburys called Orinico, very nice too.

Peanut butter Milk Stout. By an American brewery "Tailgate". It's about £4 for a 330 ml can, but is worth a try if you fancy a treat.

£4 for 330ml - wow It's really nice stuff if you like peanut flavour. Sounds obvious but some stouts have a hint of flavours. Not this. It's liquid peanut butter. Try Amazon.co.uk loads cheaper.
