Wonder if the incoming Gunn could trigger some other interest in January, maybe dodged a bullet. Over to you... Hopefully he's of the right calibre Heard Gunn is a big bore.

Doesn't seem to be an option to buy, which makes it a bit more perplexing Good deal for their player and their club.

We needed back up to Davis, and on that basis Gunn is adequate. How anyone can describe him as top class is beyond me when over his last 23 appearances he has conceded an average of 2 goals a game; that’s much worse than the keeper we’ve just let go.

Even if that’s the case, his wages will be sky high for a Championship number 2. I’m struggling to make sense of this in either the scenario he is number 1 or number 2.

If he does well, we could be faced with the double whammy of a Davies with nose-out-of-joint and a Gunn who is now of use to Southampton or of interest to a Premier League team. If he doesn't do well or doesn't play much, he won't sign anyway. Just wondering how we can win on this one I think it's the sort of signing we should have been doing a couple of years ago. Davies on his toes and Gunn chomping at the bit. Good stuff in my book. And I think the gaffer is keeping his powder dry 😊😊

I was hoping to come on and get some decent comments about Gunn I don't know much about him...but that's not the scope of the conversation at the moment.
Also thought he was a forward...a target man.

It's beyond you that there are ways of assessing a keeper that might go deeper than the number of goals his team has conceded? Actually the principal way of assessing a goalkeeper ( even now) is to assess how good they are at stopping the ball going into the net. That may be beyond you, but two a game isn’t very good. In case you hadn’t noticed, he’s actually done a Jack Butland- England squad, club first choice, then form drops off a cliff including conceding 9 in one game, now finds himself 3rd choice at his actual club and ends up coming to a Championship club to sit on the bench. Now tell me, isn’t that a factual assessment of Gunn, or is there some other way of making out he’s actually pretty brilliant?

What- are you actually saying that the job of the goalkeeper is not to stop the ball going into the net, or that Hassenhuttel hasn’t been watching him and has demoted him to his present position based on what he sees? Really?

What- are you actually saying that the job of the goalkeeper is not to stop the ball going into the net, or that Hassenhuttel hasn’t been watching him and has demoted him to his present position based on what he sees? Really? I’m not claiming anything. I’m simply challenging your assertion that he can’t be an excellent keeper because of Southampton’s goals against record. I have as little idea as you as to whether he’ll be any good, but as it happens I have a close Saints fan mate who says he was excellent as their #1, and indeed still rates him now - he’s pleased he’s gone on loan to get games (🤔) but wants him back. Rates him way ahead of Forster, for example, and ideally would like to get him back as their #1. You could say you might find the odd Stoke fan who would say something similar about Butland, but I think you’d struggle to find a Soton fan who slates Gunn the way Jack has been slated on here the past year or so. There’s also the glowing Norwich testimonies from their promotion season. So there’s that, from people who’ve watched him every week for the last several years, versus a number in his team’s GA column. Neither is enough on its own to say whether he can or can’t be a great keeper for us (which is what you’re doing), but there’s certainly enough there for it to be reasonably promising.
