I suspect that if he can hold on to his lead, then winning the Giro is going to make it more likely that he will be cleared of doping.

I may be being naive but I don't believe Chris Froome has cheated or doped in the past and as he is still waiting for his Salbutamol case to be resolved there would be no way at all that he would even consider cheating in any way. Surely he would have been tested after today's stage so why risk any possible infringement or further trouble.
I think today's phenomenal ride was totally clean.

That's what we all hope, but as we've discussed many times in this thread, the definition of "clean" is far from transparent. Sports science has lead to where we are now and something radical is needed to redefine the limits of how far the rules can be pushed.

Holy fuckballs what on earth happened!!!???
That was absolutely outstanding today. Almost every day so far I've ended up seeing a spoiler on bbc or Facebook to see who won the stage but managed to keep away from it all day.
Unfortunate for Yates, he must be absolutely broken today. But wow, chapeau Froomey lad. Sets tomorrow up for something special!!

What a stage! Basically just watched the last 90km 'live' fast forwarding a few mins at a time on the descents, absolutely captivating. One of the most remarkable things I've ever seen in sport, although the words Floyd and Landis did pop into my mind at one point.
Tomorrow who knows what the fuck will happen. TD spent almost as long on the front at Froome so in a way he's had nearly as hard a day. All bets are off though. Will have to try and watch live as I am off to the pub for the CL final.

Oh aye, really felt sorry for Yates. Thought he must have been ill but what I've just read of his post race interview doesn't seem to be the case. Still, three wins so resort more than due.

I struggle to see how he has made the biggest transformation in the history of cycling without being doped, to be honest. Most of the high-profile dopers were still decent riders when they were younger and cleaner - Lance Armstrong was a world champion before he even knew what EPO was. Froome went from an absolute no-one to a Grand Tour podium place in the space of about 8 or 10 months. Let's hope I'm wrong, for the sake of the sport.

Frome's ride today compares with Stephen Roche's "Oui, mais pas de femme toute de suite" ride back in '87. Magnificent

That all happened when he was around 25/26 years old too, which isn't really a surprise to have his real breakthrough years at that age. It might have been a couple of years earlier had his wotsit been diagnosed and treated sooner.

I'm sure I've seen an interview with Brailsford where he said Froome had been capable of these high power outputs but they couldn't understand why he couldnt maintain them or why it took time for him to recover. He said this trend could be tracked back through his time at Barloworld and the World Cycling Centre. I think that lead to the diagnosis.

Hopefully yesterday's huge effort won't have taken too much out of him and he can maintain the gap to Tom Dumoulin so Froomey can win the Giro. It certainly looked like all the riders had been completely drained yesterday so they'll probably all have been affected the same.
Really looking forward to the stage today as the other riders will still have to try and attack but hopefully Team Sky will have the race under control.

Hopefully not - they certainly had to go shit or bust and it paid off big time yesterday. Difficult to read Dumoulin though. There were a few times on that final ascent yesterday that he seemed to be going backwards but then he came back, just got left behind in the final 300m by the young 'uns and Pinot. I'm just about set out for a 150km myself so really looking forward to getting back and watch the full stage on Eurosport this evening. GOARN FROOMEY!!!!

Sadly for Yates(and his brother) he always seems to fade in the final week of a grand tour.
I had been saying all week at work that i thought it would happen and that it would be between Froome and Dumoulin for the Giro Rosa. However, i didn't expect it all to happen in the space of a single stage and oh so dramatically.
Today has the potential to be a great stage and hopefully a win for Froome. Team Sky have a much stronger lineup than Sunweb as long as they didn't go too deep yesterday
Chapeau Froomey lad, more of the same again today!!!

Pinot is going backwards at an alarming rate - currently over 21 minutes behind the leader !
Froome and Team Sky currently looking in control.
Just hope he can go on and win the Giro now without any problems.

It's unprecedented, and certainly not 'steady'. Is it proof that he definitely doped? Certainly not. But it is absolutely remarkable. Imagine if Antonio Nibali suddenly finished 2nd in this Giro, and went on to win Grand Tour after Grand Tour - he is 25yo and never won a professional race. Wouldn't you be suspicious?

There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of professional races - some of them quite frankly are of a very shit standard. The ones Froome was winning were of a lower standard than that.

Are they going to leave vuelta for GT Maybe but you'd have thought they'd possibly want G at the TdF for Froome, although G does deserve another crack as leader in a grand Tour so he could well be saved for La Vuelta. Looking forward to both races. Really great result for Froome and Sky !

When Froome joined Sky he was kept primarily as a mountain domestique for Wiggins. He was also earmarked as Wiggins replacement from day one. We saw what happened in 2012 when Froome was all set for the stage and had to be called back to help Wiggins.
He obviously had consistent performances and great potential before then or Sky wouldn't have signed him in the first place so it doesn't seem such a dramatic change IMO.

Are they going to leave vuelta for GT Yeah maybe but if he carries on his start to the season it makes you wonder if Bernal will be given something of a crack at it. I know Sky have indicated he will be going to the tour with Froome I assume to learn the ropes.

Nice one Froomey lad. Great last climb. Loved the counter and then slow down from Froome to basically whack his cock around Dumoulin's face to say "I've got plenty left son" - then sprint clear at the line almost as a final insult. Dumoulin looked absolutely broke crossing the line - definitely plenty more to come from him in the future though.
What happened to Pinot though? Just cracked liked Yates yesterday??
