Does anyone know how much the economy shrunk over Q1 and Q2? I've seen that the Q2 figures are skewed slightly because the UK spent more of Q2 in lockdown than other European countrie. Cheers. Just had time to look into some other countries - the Eurozone in general contracted 3.8% in Q1, with France at 5.8%, and Spain at 5.2%. So there does seem to be a small amount of UK's appalling Q2 figures in comparison to other countries is because we went into lockdown later, meaning we spent less time in lockdown during Q1 and more time in Q2. But I'm not sure it's enough to fully explain why we are running behind most countries (barring Spain as far as I can see) in terms of our economic performance.

All hangs on the recovery really, how long that takes, what the government does to encourage it etc. Interesting take in the Telegraph today, basically arguing to raise taxes, promote the gig economy and zero hours contracts and time limit benefits for the unemployed since they're likely to grow in number. What you're supposed to do if you don't get a job before the time runs out it obviously didn't say! Or we could put forward a radical plan to create hundreds of thousands of jobs in a new green economy with us at the forefront globally. Proper sustainable jobs that require skills and expertise and that tap into the worlds biggest crisis. I won’t hold my breath of course...... Well, the Tories have been using the phrase "the greenest government ever" for about a decade now so there's no reason for such cynicism, prestwich! It's absolutely the right way forward and will help to address the one genuinely existential threat we currently face. Unfortunately, when it comes down to it, business quite likes the way it currently operates and anything "environmental" which can be portrayed as threatening to the way business operates is unlikely to go ahead. It doesn't help that there are numerous climate change deniers close to government in the Tory party, not least Owen Paterson who was, unbelievably, actually Environment Secretary for a while! On top of which half of the rightwing press is anti-environmental issues. The Telegraph and Mail never miss an opportunity to promote driving and air travel and knock initiatives like electric vehicles and green energy.

The frustrating thing is there’s companies out there (Rolls Royce, JCB to keep it fairly local) that are making redundancies who could easily diversify with their R&D and engineering/manufacturing capabilities. They could be world leaders......

So far... £252m of public money given to AYANDA CAPITAL, registered in Mauritius, to supply PPE that never appeared. £186m of public money given to UNISERVE LTD of Essex, the UK’s largest privately owned logistics and global trade management company, to supply PPE that never appeared. £116m of public money given to P14 MEDICAL LTD of Liverpool, which had liabilities exceeding assets by £485,000 in December 2019 with just £145 in cash and at the bank, for PPE that never appeared. £108m of public money given to PEST FIX, with 16 employees and net assets of £19,000, for PPE that never appeared. £14.2m and a subsequent £93.2m of public money given to CLANDEBOYE AGENCIES Ltd, a confectionery wholesaler in Co Antrim, for PPE that never appeared. £40m of public money given to MEDICINE BOX LTD of Sutton-in-Ashfield, despite having assets of just £6,000 in March, for PPE that never appeared. £32m and a subsequent £16m of public money given to INITIA VENTURES LTD, filed for dormancy in January this year, for PPE that never appeared. £28m of public money given to MONARCH ACOUSTICS LTD of Nottingham, makers of shop and office furniture, for PPE that never appeared. £25m of public money given to LUXE LIFESTYLE LTD, to supply garments for biological or chemical protection to the NHS. According to Companies House, the business was incorporated by fashion designer Karen Brost in November 2018. It appears to have no employees, no assets and no turnover. £18.4m of public money given to AVENTIS SOLUTIONS LTD of Wilmslow, with just £322 in assets, for PPE that never appeared. £10m of public money given to MEDCO SOLUTIONS LTD, incorporated on 26 March (three days after lockdown) with a share capital of just £2, for PPE that never appeared. £1.1m of public money given to Bristol shoemaker Toffeln Ltd, had seemingly never supplied any PPE whatsoever in the past, for PPE that never appeared. £825,000 of pubic money given to MGP ADVISORY, described as a venture and development capital business that was in danger of being struck off the companies register for failing to file accounts. All taken from official records. This is just PPE, not the 10 billion pounds track and trace contracts or the app fiasco.

Not yet. At least another 12 months before the print media fully turn on Johnson and then come out in support of Starmer’s red shade of neoliberalism......

Was this money that was "given" to these 'businesses' actually given as money (bank transfer, treasury bonds, etc) or was it the value of orders placed? And, were these decisions made by politicians, or officials? Are you able to supply a link to the "official records" you are quoting from?

I have no idea if you have ever supported the Labour Party I'm just interested in your opinion of the direction the current leader appears to be going I will admit to never having been a supporter of labour but I do believe that it will be bad for the country to have a policy lite sudo tory opposition
