Well with an 80 seat majority he can control whatever he likes. He can put people he trusts into whatever position he likes. It's about time we had a government of whatever flavour able to make some decisions. He wants to follow through on the manifesto let's see what happens after the end of this final frigging Brexit year. At least Labour, the Libdems and the SNP will be an irrelevance mainly thanks to your main man and his awful organisation of hard left wingers. Thatcher and Blair had bigger majorities and still the Treasury and the Chancellor had power and influence. This is different, this isn't even trying to hide it. No 10 is running number 10 and 11 and most of Whitehall with puppets in place. This is unprecedented in modern times. The Trump playbook in full operation again. He's after the set up that Cameron and Osborne had although they were still hamstrung with a coalition followed by a small majority and the issues of Brexit that followed. Trump doesn't seem to have control over anyone but Boris seems to be more conciliatory. Nice to see that you're giving the new government some time to see what happens. We haven't had a government in place for the best part of 10 years capable of making a decision now we have.... get used to it and stop moaning FFS.

This sort of Governing is truly unprecedented in modern times and it scares the shit out of me when they're intent on tinkering with constitutional arrangements that suit them.

But the criticism directed at Johnson seems more and more hysterical and misplaced.

They're still steaming ahead with tax breaks which will benefit the richest 10%, they've deported a load of swarthy looking fellas many of whom have lived here since being babies, austerity continues to tear into places like Stoke on Trent with a council on its arse facing £9M worth of fresh cuts, you have a bloke LITERALLY starving to death in the street, you have families eating baby food, food banks are the biggest growth industry in the country and he continues to lie through his teeth on Brexit.
This isn't a new broom, its the traditional Tory broom and almost certainly a lot nastier with it.

Thatcher was a very strong leader, with pathetic opposition leaders, but she still had difficulties with her Chancellors of Exchequer and the traditional "one nation" "wets". Blair had his pact with Brown and had to concede control of finance and agreed to hand over the reins when he had had enough. Boris has buried any internal Conservative opposition, as they can expect to be tossed out if they dare to challenge him, and now he has control of #11 as well as #10. It seems to me that Boris will continue to keep tight control of spending generally, whilst splashing the cash on vanity projects like HS2, and delivering Brexit with a view to going down in history as one the UK's outstanding PMs. For all our sakes I hope he does not blow it and push us over a precipice. I suspect he won't as he strikes me that he wants to be loved and cares about his image, unlike Thatcher who was on a monetary mission and actually relished being disliked and certainly wouldn't let unpopularity get in the way of her mission to set the world to rights as she saw it.

As you say time will tell but he'll have a clear run from within his own party if this show of strength is anything to go by. Boris wants to go into the trade deal negotiations from a position of strength and he's going to do everything he can to make people feel good to be British (whatever that means). If Europe sees that the UK is largely behind him and also less fearful of a no deal Brexit, the EU will give a deal that's favourable to us. It was a ploy by the EU to play hardball with the UK since the referendum as the country was clearly very divided and made to believe that we were starring into the abyss. There's a can do attitude that's beginning to build and that's what Boris wants and needs. Whether that makes us more likely to leave without a deal remains to be seen.

It's one of life's ironies that reducing taxes on the rich actually increases government revenue; something socialists never manage to comprehend. High taxes only lead to tax avoidance, evasion, the rich moving out their money, lack of reinvestment of profit, the rich voting with their feet, etc. What is the point of working to create wealth if the government take it away? The French president increased taxes on the rich and 100,000 French people have moved to London. Ronald Reagan reduced taxes when he came to power and it boosted the US economy and government revenue increased as companies were more profitable and the population were earning more and their was higher employment leading to more tax revenue. Capitalism has an ugly face but it creates the wealthiest society. We have the highest employment ever, and the lowest unemployment for over 40 years. It is incumbant on us as citizens to look after the poor and needy.

It is incumbant on us as citizens to look after the poor and needy. I heard that it's 300,000 French citizens in London all high wealth, high earners the sort that some on here absolutely despise despite the fact that they're one influx that are absolutely contributing to the UK Treasury. Here's a link to some information.... France's 6th biggest city. www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-26823489These are the options for the top 10% of earners in the UK if they don't fancy paying the rate. They can either pay 0% or the going rate. They can also tailor their income to make it lower and live off wealth for the duration. Getting the highest tax rate is vitally important to keeping these high earners/ high wealth individuals in the country producing jobs and paying taxes to the Treasury. You might not like the fact that Denise's obscene dividend was paid to her but it put around £150M into the public coffers in taxation and that's before any VAT was collected on the spend or tax collected from salaries and profits of the recipients.

Perfect for you I guess. An opinion piece dripping in sarcasm. But, that’s all it is - an opinion. One you share, of course, so you’ll lap it up and share it as if it’s some sort of fundamental truth. For me, I’ll treat it for what it is. An occasionally humorous but mostly tedious opinion piece from someone with an axe to grind.

Momo, I've been saying this( what you've just said)for a long time. I don't think it is a consequence of the Tory government. It is a consequence of globalisation in a consumer society enabled by the technological revolution....in my opinion as big as the industrial revolution. The faceless bureaucrats don't really need many thinkers, creators even entrepreneurs just cogs in the wheel( there are exceptions obviously). We all expect Amazon to deliver by tomorrow at the cheapest price. Often It is those who carried out the old traditional working class jobs who have got the service roles. Similar in the fast food industry and telephone call centres. This paper talks about it "‘An assembly line in the head’: work and employee relations in the call centre; Phil Taylor and Peter Bain....arguing that this work is as bad( worse in fact) than when the arguments against exploitation were often based upon someone being a cog in a wheel on a production line with no power. Labour's challenge is to try to genuinely often something different, some hope , creativity. Unfortunately as politicians who themselves are part of the system they seem to me to be simply perpetuating victimhood in order to get the moral high ground themselves and in actuality are offering nothing that is very different....they are creating an underclass whose only state of being is that "we are helpless/dependent".....and that does not mean that I believe we should not care and that we should not look after the most vulnerable in our society. I don't know the answer but just to "blame the Tories" won't solve the problem....in fact it is deceiving and using those they say they are helping....(for their own political advantage in some cases) I don't know the answer....but obviously there are political things we could do.

Another prejudiced story - although if you read to the end, and between the lines, you get a sense of what is going on. Namely, the GMB ain’t happy that Amazon doesn’t recognise unions and wants to change this situation. So it agitates. Meaning it invents, exaggerates, misrepresents. A sympathetic newspaper picks it up and someone like you spreads the word. In other words. It is to all intents and purposes, nonsense.

Rumours, claims protests against tax yet no workers or ex workers mentioned its all just comfortable middle class wankers saving the "poor" who actually dont seem to recognise the conditions MCW's claim. But hey if you want to protest companies who dont pay tax and treat their staff like shit perhaps start with corbyns labour party.

It is incumbent on the Government and a Social Welfare society to look after the poor and needy. That is what we are. You and sheikhy miss my point. If you rely on government to provide everything from the cradle to the grave you will still have poverty and disadvantaged. A civilised society depends on it's members helping one another not just bureaucratic government and local authorities. There are many who don't want to be institutionalised. There are many who recognize this and help out through charities, volunteer for hospitals, social centres, etc. Government can provide facilities for sickness other social services, but that doesn't tackle loneliness and the marginalisation of the old for example. I posted a comment on exclusion of the elderly on this MB recently and was attacked for it. Society moves on by improved technology and understanding, but human nature never changes. As Dickens pointed out in "A Christmas Carol" provision of services ("Are there no work houses?") does not alone solve society's problems. What is required is each of us to look after our relatives and neighbours, particularly the old, the very young, and the disadvantaged (e.g handicapped/disabled). healthcare-communications.imedpub.com/social-exclusion-of-elderly.php?aid=9866www.huffpost.com/entry/what-other-cultures-can-teach_n_4834228?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvLnVrL3VybD9zYT10JnJjdD1qJnE9JmVzcmM9cyZzb3VyY2U9d2ViJmNkPTMmdmVkPTJhaFVLRXdqbzg1Q2hydFBuQWhWOFFSVUlIY1NpQUprUUZqQUNlZ1FJREJBSyZ1cmw9aHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZ3d3cuaHVmZnBvc3QuY29tJTJGZW50cnklMkZ3aGF0LW90aGVyLWN1bHR1cmVzLWNhbi10ZWFjaF9uXzQ4MzQyMjgmdXNnPUFPdlZhdzFIZ0FXVGppaHZhRnBSWlhPYVVfYVM&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAKpAPvhVKUZyAu0K0sG8qXyugqamGeRIZdQMBK3O4BDgFOkGg5jldSTZITb1ctfuBLkPBx2lJ4PPyvwnloIy7YkXat3GSwESDZZSJMBwF1CUYSGNliOM_fKyws5z7PphMspqRWiTlxT1g5ZTgA2IQMEnzBTQmirqXNToE26XwTZg
