Confirmed as having suffered "permanent and severe brain damage" after collapsing against Werder Bremen. Just 20 years old with the world at his feet very sad.....

He looked a really promising, tricky player as well.
What caused it?

He looked a really promising, tricky player as well. What caused it? Could be a haemorrhage/aneurysm type of thing, or his brain has been starved of oxygen as a result of his collapse?

From ITV News: "The midfielder collapsed during a recent pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen and was transported to hospital where he was placed into a coma. A lack of oxygen supply to the brain following his collapse is what is thought to have caused the damage. It is expected Nouri will soon travel to Amsterdam for further treatment, but the chances of recovery are low."

It's becoming worryingly commonplace now amongst sportsmen this sort of thing is, particularly footballers. I'm aware of the cases of European footballers dying suddenly on the field, Miklos Feher and Antonio Puerta are a couple of examples, but these sort of things appear to be more frequent in footballers of African descent, Nouri, Tiote, Vivien-Foe, Muamba etc, it's a worrying trend.

They're bringing him to the Amsterdam Medical Centre as soon as he's stable enough to be transported.
He's one of the real special talents in the youth set up they have. He's played plenty of games also in the first team in the league and Europa league.
His parents were reported to be saying that they've tried communicating with him but there's no reaction from him yet.
I've raved about this kid for months ...... such a shame
Hang in there kidda 👍👍👍👍

It does seem to affect players of African descent more, but did Clive Clarke suffer the same condition too? And the cricketer James Taylor?

I think having 0 energy may have an effect

Something similar killed a family member of mine at a young age, also on a football pitch, I'd advocate that all footballers be made to have thorough tests of their hearts and brains, clubs have the facilities to be able to do this now.

Horrible news. I was hoping that he would recover after being taken care off on the pitch, but that sadly didn't happen. I wish you all the best, Nouri.

A schoolmate collapsed while running and died. He was 18 and had graduated only a few weeks earlier. I've heard of several of these cases. It seems much more common for males as I've only heard of one case of a young female suddenly collapsing and dying.
It's absolutely tragic.

From what I've heard, in many of these cases the problem can't be detected in advance. Professional footballers undergo extensive medical testing with the latest technology.

Without boring you all with my life story, it happened to me although I was lucky enough to make a full recovery. I'm arguably healthier now than before.
My heart breaks for the guy and his family. From my experience, it's the family that really go through it. He will hopefully know very little of what has happened.
Here's hoping he can have some sort of life after this. So sad.

Been a good deal of European players in the last two decades or so as well, Austrian, German, Norwegian, Romanian but more lower leagues and never really got the headlines of the top league players. A good deal of top profile African players as you say though. Was quite common in the 50s and 60s

Just been watching some of the report on this over here on the news....the communication method they’ve trained him to do is eyebrow movement and answering simple yes and no questions.... obviously it doesn’t sound a lot to the man on the street but to come back after what he’s been through is nothing short of amazing....it’s literally training a persons brain to function Keep battling fella!!!!!!
