Olivers in Leek, early Eighties. Extra special. Them could smell the Oatcakes on yer breath. If yer face didn't quite fit they'd do their level best to rearrange it so it did.

I'll never ever forget when Shelleys painted the dance floor red and it was still wet when people were dancing on it. Tiffany's....met the wife there used to sit on the balcony watching the fighting The Place...only club I ever had sex in.(says it all really doesn't it) Stoke Town Hall (kings hall) with Bruno Brookes (and his cigar) Longton Town Hall with my mate Trevor doing the disco. Frankie Valli doing The Night shook the town centre. Meir Youth Club Gets a shout as it's where I first heard Northern Soul Heavy steam Machine ..great rope lights on the ceiling Top Rank ...Saturday mornings under 18s the Saturday night borrow big brothers jacket and tie for over 18s. Maxims.. Top of the World Stafford...Saturday Night Fever Dance floor, pity you could only get 20 people on it. Roman Candle...How they got away with keeping Burslem awake all night is beyond me, great club. Queens at Basford ...What can one say...madness pure madness ...loved it. Teddy's at Trentham Gardens ..A bigger Queens really ...loved it. Yup sorry to say I've danced in pretty much every club in Stoke-on-Trent we even had a school disco at dinner time at junior school this was the first record I danced to. Did your mate Trevor's surname begin with H and end with y? Meir Youth Club great memories of top Northern Soul tunes. My fav was Better use your Head by Little Anthony and the Imperials

I first met Colin when he was DJ'ing at the Crystal in 'castle on a Sunday nights.

Neil Baker was a bouncer on the door at Olivers if my memory serves me well, a dangerous place indeed for a potherb in the early eighties.

I believe he's a legend on the N. Soul scene ..... struggled a bit with acid house when he DJ'd for us in '88 ..... it was all a bit much and a bit new to him ..... but to his credit he spent every penny we paid him on new acid vinyl . I've seen his collection ..... it's biblical ..... top bloke is Colin

That little oatcake shop they've got does the oatcakes all wrong as well ..... way too thick , no clue Always been a bit native, committed Moorlander now, and Leek is far more cosmopolitan and welcoming of different types than it was when it was the largest manufacturer of bobble hats, Club scarves and Royal Mourning wear, in't Empire. They still wunner pass a McDonald's. Once had to climb out of the window of the Rugby Club Ladies bogs because it all kicked off. Five in an Escort you could open and start with a chip fork. Often found it re-parked, the tapes re-arranged or nicked after a night out. Not mine, I borrowed the family burgundy maxi, but fucked up a couple of times when the owd fitted the immobilizer. Dead switch under the dash, and don't forget the Krooklock. Got stuck outside Shelley's once when there was an hour before he needed it for work. Didn't dare ring, only needed to flip the switch back. Forgot. Bump starting wasn't working. Not Clubs but there was a pre weekend Thursday {no girlfriends} night out in Dad's cars or those lucky enough to have their first. Avengers, Escorts, Mini's and that. Intrepid travellers from Packmoor, Chell, Fegg Hayes and Oxford. either.. Trader Jacks Padgebury's Winking Man Roaring Meg La Trecks Boozy Dog Old Mill Doll's House Cock Loft wherever we had a whisper about or the creme de la creme Bonkers, Macc...

Yes, the 'wayman at Threapwood - great Rock night. Walked back to Werrington on a cold February night, before I managed to flag a taxi down Done the same, more chance of a lift off a tractor than a taxi out there, had some wild fuckin nights at the wayman woke up one morning in a bed with two girls in Rocester all stark bollock naked, very awkward they were sisters pity I was so far out of it I can't remember anything You're a fucking legend. Made me snort out loud. Almost wasted a dash of Peroni. Thumbsup

or the creme de la creme Bonkers, Macc... Was that the wine bar sort of gaff? I'm sure that was the place we went in after a Man City or Stockport game. Met up with a random crowd of Stoke. Marched up there. Ruined the place. Scuttled all sorts out of there and took it over. Stand off with a few bouncers inside. They shut dowm and refused to serve. Well, you don't refuse Stokies ale. So it got redecorated by the Longton/Blurton massive, ably assisted by Castle's finest.

Noted for a DJ with an acerbic whit, cheeky bar staff who did a short skirt catwalk across the bar, on the hour. Shut down for the shagging on the grassy bank outside. Demolished and now sadly cardboard hooses. In search of Ian Curtis but found 'Tin Tin' Duffy and it worked for a bit.

I think you've been watching Taken and taken it a bit too literally mate . I never came across anything so gross in all my time out there . I've never heard anyone mention it either . That's not to say it doesn't go on in Africa and I wouldn't put anything past the Saudi's but the UAE is very civilised in that regard . It's far from perfect , if you fuck about over there it can be very serious , but I think you have this one all wrong . Have you been out there ? I doubt you'd be suggesting this sort of shit if you had . Plenty of examples: mobile.nytimes.com/2007/10/31/world/africa/31iht-dubai.4.8133097.htmlThat makes grim reading.

Goodness knows what OldStoke's comments have to do with clubbing .... I suppose some posters have just lost their way and focus on the evil things in the world .... like they forgot what dance music was all about; positivity, energy, optimism.

It's good that posters are made aware of the dangers of clubbing in these places though by the efforts of Dutchpeter and Oldstoke and others. People need to be aware of the potential thuggery in Leek and the general rape and sodomy and even disappearences in the UAE for example.
