As mentioned earlier, even if it's on reduced terms while he gets fit, just don't see the need for it. Obviously he can use the facilities as he wishes for as long as he wants - but would have thought a proper contract on anything but pin money is a step too far.
This is a guy who has earned tens of millions over the last decade and shelled out ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND POUNDS ON A FISH TANK. Not as if he'll be asking for a few shifts behind the bar of his local to pay for his rent, is it?
It's only defensible IMO if Hughes still rates him and wants him to be in the 25 - but that presents other red flags about likely budgets as he has rarely featured previously when younger and in peak health.

He's probably on a smaller wage and the club are helping him back rather than just ditching him. We are supposed to be a caring club which looks after its players after all. We're a football club not a charity. We're whatever the owners want us to be it's their cash and their decision.....

Lowest spenders in the league last summer. Extending contracts of players over 30. When will people wake up to what is going on? So it's not Hughes then ? Maybe he's working to constraints!!!.....fuck me you've put the cat amongst the pigeons now mate Having sat and thought about it, I might have jumped in a bit. Interesting debate though eh?

I dont know why people are wetting there knickers, its not like he'll start. To be fair if everyone is fit he won't get in the squad.

Can't get too concerned. Keeping them all may be excessive, but I see justifications/reasons for extending them on an individual basis. Who knows? Plenty of players leave on a free and maximize sign on fees. Players get sold within the term of their contracts. It offers some security for Club and players in negotiating a move.
There's Hughes who played until 38 and the Coates family Club, long term planning and commercial imperatives to factor in too. As well as some footballing stuff.
We have little power over these decisions getting too exorcised about it reeks of the frustration of impotency.
I'm happy enough to reserve judgement until after the window.

I'm not worried by this. I might have dreamt it when we've done it before but won't it just be a token deal to help him out so he can use our training facilities, play in friendlies/u23 games and be insured?
If he makes the 25 man squad it's a different matter but I can't see it.

The insurance point could be an interesting one.

If it isn't, I'd agree it would be time to worry about a couple of things (Hughes's sanity and the size of our war chest) but I reckon it's pretty harmless.

I think Coates has set this precedent now and he's old school cool enough to apply it to Stephen Ireland. It's slightly maddening, but for many Coates being a gent and Stoke being a decent club is what sets us apart from so many ghastly owners and the otherwise toxic nature of modern football.

This is fucking doolally now and surely signals the end of the recruitment department?
Donna Louise better watch out as well we're obviously moving our charitable arm to the Help the bastard Aged.

Lowest spenders in the league last summer. Extending contracts of players over 30. When will people wake up to what is going on? Coates/Scholes and Carto have been wholly negligent with signings. allowing us to be held ransom by a group of ageing British players. British players have always required top brass and we've never paid it

If this is true then I'm done.next season rather than waking up on a Saturday morning excited for the match,I'm going to sneak into the railway paddock up the Fail and collect all the dust off the empty seats. I will then mix it with dog piss and inject it into my hairy grey bollocks.

Just the musings of a simple old man but I imagine that the club wants to maintain the reputation (that it believes it has) for looking after its players in adversity, as in Rory, Wilko etc. I presume that someone, could be the Chairman or could be the chief executive, thinks that this gives us an edge over other clubs when trying to attract new players and that's why they've extended Ireland's contract.
Personally I think they're wasting their time and money because players these days, and their agents, only care about who is paying most when deciding to join a new club.

Difference is Wilko and Odemwingie worked their bollocks off for us. Ireland is a grade A tosser who's coined it in for doing fuck all for a good 12 months before he got crocked.

The biggest signing we can make in the summer is someone like Gareth Rogers from Southampton - they're actually planning to boot out Puel this close season as finishing (most likely) 8th and reaching a final is not good enough This means we'd finally be rid of Scholes We'd soon then be rid of Carto We'd suddenly have a vision for the future that doesn't resemble turning Clayton Woods into a retirement home Hughes and his cronies would either have to deliver on a forward thinking strategy or else look elsewhere for employment
We shouldn't be singing for Hughes' head but Scholes' who has been an anchor on our ambitions for far too long

I didn't mind when it was a token few months to get fit etc but a year seems a bit much, in my mind its view to him having a chance of playing in the first team and if thats the case next seasons all ready a struggle.
