I thought there was a law against that? England games must stay on free to air

Am I the only person who has never heard of the new "Nations League" competition ?
It seems to be trying to put some structure and purpose around what were once known as 'friendlies'.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Nations League was created by Uefa two years ago in one of the biggest overhauls of international football. It will replace most friendly matches and will kick-off during the international window in September 2018.
The competition will divide Europe’s 54 countries into four divisions known as ‘Leagues’, with 12 teams in League A, 12 in League B, 14 in League C and 16 in League D. Sides will be placed in leagues depending on their Uefa national team coefficients, with the top 12 – which England are likely to be among – in League A.

It says they will show qualifying matches for Euro 2020 and the World Cup too, not just this Nations league.

Unless we get good this really could lead to the end of the support the England football team get.
I know I couldn't be arsed to go to the pub to watch them and I suspect other won't too. A lot of my mates proper football fan and casual could barely be arsed to turn it over to ITV to watch them in the last 5 years.

It's though isn't Wezzer? How many people if they haven't got Sky are going to watch us play a qualifying game on a weekday night that isn't a Friday? It's bad for the national team.

Sky thin end of the wedge imo. Did the same with cricket and F1 will go the same way. Interest in cricket has all but disappeared, F1 is dying slowly and international football will go the same way.

Interest in cricket has disappeared?
Don't think so!
Skys coverage is excellent.
Lets go back to BBC taking it off air for the news and kids TV hour...I still cant believe they go off air on radio for the fucking shipping forecast in the middle of an over!
You only have to look at the coverage both the BBC and ITV offer to sports they retain to understand why Sky (and BT, although its just the BBC folk with a little more money!) take the prize jewels
The offer little money or investment, the coverage is amateur, commentators are Sky rejects or cast offs, and they all expect something for nothing.
They are lucky the government protects certain events like World Cups/Euro finals or Olympics - imagine what Sky could do.
The Beeb and ITV are best kept to showing highlights packages (as C5 do for the cricket, BBC1 does for MoTD, even though its shit)

PS - interest in international football has waned full stop, nowt to do with TV, but the arrogance of our FA, successive fails and team of overpaid bench sitters playing for big clubs.

I think the shipping forecast is better than the cricket and the golf and the horse racing and would like to see more of it.
Football is our NATIONAL sport and should never be pay per view or we are disenfranchising our youngsters. Just tell me how a 12 year old boy or girl whose parents have no money and little interest in sport gets to watch football.
Most of you can not imagine how it must be to NEVER have been to a live football match, I'm afraid we have all been spoilt. MOTD is on far too late at night for younger viewers and watching something you already know the result of hardly holds the excitement of a live match especially when it's 1 minute of biased highlights on last.
Perhaps it's time for Stoke City TV to screen ALL our matches in full on a mid week day on a medium the they all have access to. YouTube perhaps with Nick Hancock doing the commentary.

Cricket was such a strange one. England finally won back the ashes in 2005 after years and years of trying among scenes of great tension and national rejoicing and the next thing that happened is 'BANG' Test Match cricket went off free to air. I know cricket still has a dedicated pay to view following but I agree just as its moment in the sun should have been coming it simply vanished from the national psyche

Sky nick the BBC's pundits especially the new ones. Redknapp and Henry both started on terrestrial tv. So take sport away from millions where it can inspire millions to a few who may watch it/may not? Are you a Tory?

It offers extra qualification slots into the UEFA European Championships. These matches are competitive (it's a tournament) and are certainly not friendlies. It sounds like a dressing up of the friendlies to me.

I've been working in Education for 20 years, Sports Depts will tell you that there is very little interest amongst kids in English Cricket apart from a few Asian kids at the present time. I have seen a massive drop in interest in Cricket amongst youngsters over the last 10 years despite the good work of local cricket clubs and I think this is to do with the monopoly of Sky As for the their coverage being good....I question that...most of the commentators (Atherton, Gower etc are like watching paint dry)

No I am not a Tory - of all the things you have ever said that's the most offensive bayernoatcake ! I run one of said junior cricket teams down at Knype, we have a large and successful kids section, not half as successful as places like Hem Heath and Moddershall mind but there are lots of leagues and lots of kids playing multi times every week Drop off nowadays is 16-18 when the kids find 'other' things to do, or are already playing 1st and 2nds if good enough. Cricket was underfunded for decades with poor TV coverage and deals, its no coincidence that the teams ascent up the rankings, professionalism and exposure increased tenfold with Sky. Think Sky could do themselves a favour and put SSN back on Freeview, or even the Sky Sports Mix channel where the odd Grand Prix, Cricket and Football game are shown for free For those regaling the olden days, if you were lucky you may have got 'The Big Match' on a Sunday afternoon showing a game every few weeks, there has always been MoTD on late on Sat, so not sure why its different now - there used to be about 15-20 games a season shown live on BBC/ITV at most - even in the 90s it was mainly Championship games not the Prem. There are also a shitload of sports that wouldn't get a look in on the old guard - Netball, Basketball, fuck me even 10 pin bowling and pool are shown on Sky! I enjoy my Sunday night US golf, the European tour gets unrivalled coverage, Speedway et all are shown The only thing BBC and ITV really want to show are Golf Majors, Prem games (usually Man Utd or Liverpool!), World Cups/Euros and the Olympics - they have no interest in the week to week competition which is where Sky wins out giving these sports airtime Sorry if you disagree, I begrudge paying for it so much, but I love sport (at all levels) so I do. We all saw the mess ITV made (and some clubs felt for years!) with their effort at a dedicated sports channel!

I agree with Robo, The Cricket and Golf coverage are top notch. The people talking about it actually know hat they are on about! The F1 is very good too
People can moan to they are blue in the face but how anyone can expect top notch coverage and investment for sports off a 145 quid yearly subscription - licence fee - is beyond me (considering all the other pies it has to cover).

I rarely go to the pub, dont smoke, drive a sensible car, and work hard
Its not a case of 'can afford it', its a case of 'stops in a lot so pays for it'
Lifes priorities I guess!
Whats the basic sports package cost? About £25 a month? Doesnt even fill half my tank in the car.
It isnt even a night out anymore - its about 6 pints! Without a kebab!
