Here's a thread that neatly sums up why some in Europe see the British as a bunch of jingoistic xenophobic idiots stuck in the past But as long as they have our money they don't care too much Of course they don't - that's the ultimate win isn't it?!

However the alternative is much less palatable I don't think we are necessarily. I think we're a pretty tolerant bunch on the whole. I believe that many Europeans do find our obsession with WW2 fairly perplexing though

Don't forget the Germans were very aware of the mighty Royal Navy and British sea power Absolutely ......the home fleet would have operated in the Chanel alongside the force of fifty destroyers that was based at Harwich. , not to mention the coastal forces of MTB's and MGB's ......they would have cut any invasion force to pieces .

Don't forget the Germans were very aware of the mighty Royal Navy and British sea power The Germans went through France and the Low Countries pretty rapidly......however an invasion of Britain was a totally different proposition . In Europe they used airborne forces to capture key objectives and hold them for a short time while their fast moving panzers stormed through to relieve them ( blitzkrieg ) .mostly this use of airborne forces was possible because of little or no opposition from the air ....this type of rapid warfare can only succeed through having air superiority ......you couldn't use the same tactics against this country ...any attempted airborne operations using gliders and paratroops must have failed due to the intervention of fighter command ....who would have butchered their formations to such an extent that any surviving forces. would have been ineffective , and that is even allowing for them being escorted by Luftwaffe fighters ( who couldn't effectively protect their bomber force let alone a force of slow unarmed transport aircraft and gliders ). This lack of air superiority would have allowed the Royal Navy to operate in the channel with protection from air attack ( to a great extent , but not complete ) surely resulting in the destruction of any attempted landing operation .

And by contrast of course, we have membership of NATO, that well-known, democratically elected, financially accountable outfit.
