What a great night and one of Grobbalaar's 4 games for us.Was so pleased that night for obvious reasons but also because we bounced back after the last minute Blackpool winner from Trevor Sinclair

Favourite part of that, almost on a par with the Stein goal, is the last ten seconds.
Jimmy Greaves - "John Rudge deserves credit because, I mean, not many people know where Port Vale is, Bob" Bob Hall - "You've never been, have you Jim?" Jimmy Greaves - "I've never been - Thank God!"

Steino's goal is still the best mental i've ever had at a game, totally breathless after it. The thing i remember is this cavity seeming too form as everybody seemed to jump on the person next to them. After the match one of my mates said he saw me disappearing into the crowd, for a split second he thought hed never see me again as i dissapeared under a pile of bodies. For only seconds later to reappear on the other side of the end flicking the v's at a group of vale fans who happened to contain my auntie(mums twin dont ask why supported vale we never knew) and cousins, im telling you now there us nothing so surreal as abusing a bunch if oppo fans to stop half way and go mum? Luckily i came to my senses and continued my verbal and vusuals as the hadnt spotted me. Great times

The guy is a star compiling them, I put them up in the Those Were The Days board but I give him the full credit for making them up. I used to record a lot of games on VHS but typically I lent them out and never got them back. GGRRRR!! Thank God, others recorded them and have the skills to make these vids It reduces the balance anyway, one of the unwashed has posted loads of videos of the dirty rags beating us on Youtube

Who was the lad bursting down the wing like Sir Stan reincarnated to set up Stein for the first goal?
Great cut back, and you can see Stein all the way looking around to make sure he's in space.

Or I should have watched through the entire thing and then Jimmy Greaves would have told me himself as well as also referencing Sir Stan in his assessment of it as well John Butler, anyone got any memories of him being a particularly good player for us or was this just one of those moments players have out of the blue? Apologies but I wasn't born until the year after this game was played lol.

My favourite part was after Gleghorne scored the second. After the mental I looked up and their end was empty. That was the moment when they realised what we already knew. We were (and still are) better than them!!

Apologies but I wasn't born until the year after this game was played lol. John Butler was right back in one of our best back lines from that era. He was a very decent player for us, especially under Lou Macari in the lower leagues. Players like Stein rightly get plenty of praise but the success under Macari was also built on a brilliant defence of Butler (RB), Sandford (LB), Cranson and Overson (CBs). There was an ongoing joke about Butler being 'Stoke's unsung hero' - it gets mentioned on the 92/93 season review video if I remember correctly. More of Butler, Sandford, Cranson and Overson below.

Thanks for that insight mate. I'd heard a lot about Cranson and Overson as a centre back pairing but not so much about Butler and Sandford. I'll have a watch of that when I get some more spare time while here at work lol.

Lived in Aus for 36 years and one of my few trips home to see the family coincided with this game.
A very good friend up Knutton club got me a ticket and it was one of the best nights ever watching the Potters.
I think I ve still got it on video somewhere with 2 local lads doing the commentary.
A night to remember.

We went top in November after beating Blackpool 3-1 away and went on a 25 game unbeaten run and never lost top spot. Happy days. Anyway a bit more about JB. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Butler_(footballer,_born_1962)
