Ggggoooooaaaaarrrrrrrnnnnnnn the youth!
Hopefully we will see more of some of them on the bench this season. It really is the most encouraging thing about the club at the moment. We can't waste this.

What is Campbell's goal to game ratio? He said on Twitter he's scored 20 this season. Not sure how many games he's played but must be more than a goal a game. He's scored 7 goals in 4 games in the Youth Cup and I believe he is the leading scorer in that competition.

Not a chance, we've had none of them on the bench for the last couple of games and we've still got Johnson and Shaqiri to return to the squad.

I'd have found it a bit odd if we had put any of the U18 squad on the senior bench whilst they are still involved in the FA Youth Cup. If/when we go out of the Cup then that will be the time to consider giving them a taste of League action. Our performance this season in the Youth Cup is potentially huge for the club. The more successful we are then the more chance we have of attracting good youngsters to the Academy this summer. If you were the parent of a youngster who was good enough to join an Academy, would you want them to join an Academy whose youngsters had reached the semi final (or final!) of the FA Youth Cup, or a club whose team went out in the early rounds?

The only times the manager has included youth team players in the first team squad is in the early rounds of the league cup and when injuries have meant there literally hasn't been any one else to pick. I don't believe for a minute that the reason there haven't been any of the youngsters on the bench recently is because of the youth cup run. After all, the entire point of the Academy is to produce players to play in the first team. Hopefully I'll be eating my words and we'll see the likes of Verlinden, Souttar, Campbell etc given a chance before the end of the season, but with Affelay's return and Johnson and Shaqiri due to return, I won't be holding my breath.

When I say youth team, I'm including members of the U23 squad in that btw.

To be honest until recently there have been few players produced by the academy who have been ready and able to make the step up to Premier League football. One of the disadvantages of being in the Premier League is that (unless your academy starts producing better players) then it is far more difficult for them to make the step up to playing League games for us than it was in the old days when we played in the Championship or Division 1. To ease the transition (and to get a better idea of who will make the grade) I'm delighted to see so many of our youngsters go out on loan this season. Some are doing better than others but I suspect that Ryan Sweeney, for example, is getting far more benefit from playing every week (and getting rave reviews) for Bristol Rovers than he would do getting 20 minutes here and there for our first team. Hopefully, by the end of his stint at Rovers, we'll have a much better idea whether he is ready to make the step up to the Prem or whether he needs, maybe, a Championship loan next season - possibly even Bristol Rovers! Having been at Preston last night (as was Mark Hughes) I'm pleased that, after years in the doldrums, our Academy now seems, finally, to be producing the goods. Some of last night's team were excellent - and many of them were only 16 or just turned 17. The better they are and the more successful they are, the more chance they have of making the huge step up to the Premier League.

I think we could do with a new U23 coach. I'v heard a few people say Hodge's isn't any good and he's just one of Hughes's men.
