Somebody once asked me-how do you define the greatest.
My reply-when somebody mentions your name and everybody knows who you are talking about.
That was Ali in the late 60's/70's and early 80's.
When your name transends your sport then you become the greatest.

Cassius Clay won his Olympic gold medal one month before I was born, I have to say I was oblivious to what happened to him for the next twelve years or so. Then I remember massive interest in his comeback fight, this was pre Sky Sports, internet or 24 hour news, and I wondered what the fuss was about. I then saw Michael Parkinson interview Ali, and instantly I knew, I was captivated by him. His strength of belief in the civil rights cause led to me to find out more about the subject. Remember this was now the early to mid 70's and I was living in Longton, racial violence was no stranger to where I grew up,but Ali's passion helped me to discover about Rosa Parks, led to listen to the speeches of Martin Luther King.
For me, not only is he the greatest sportsman of my lifetime, but he helped me to find a path where white supremecy had no place.
A truely GREAT MAN sleep well Muhammad

I was fortunate enough to meet Ali at a fundraising event/meal at The Brit in 2009. He obviously looked worse for wear given the effect Parkinson's Disease had had on him. But he still had presence. Greatness. I shook his hand.
Brian Clough once said that Ali was the only person he had ever met that humbled him. That he felt insignificant next to. And he was right.
So much more than a boxer.
The Greatest Sportsman ever.
One of my All Time Hero's
An inspiration to us all.
We will never see his like again.
Muhammad Ali RIP.

This is one of my favourite quotes of ali's. Should be plastered up in every school, every kids sports club. Truly inspirational words imho.
