Drove down mesen and had a wander past ,simply on the grounds of this thread.Noticed the America WWII jeep. The jet is hard to miss! Is the tank genuine or a movie prop as the tracks are off the ground and I could make out regular tyres underneath it- would a conventional trailer support that weight?

Does it have swept or straight wings ?

Mounted on the roof of a corrugated steel container by the look of it!

Typhoons just escorted a civilian airliner into Newcastle Airport after it went off course in Leeds. Heard sonic booms over Leeds, shook houses, shit myself as was out for a run.

I had noted that already ....should be a good programme , Mark Urban is a former officer in the Royal Tank Regiment himself who has wrote several good books including one called " The Rifles " which I can reccomend.

I like to hear the actual soldiers' stories, details about what they went through etc. World War Two: The Last Heroes was great , too.

I like the series where you can hear people's experiences first hand as well. "World War Two: The Last Heroes" is an excellent example.
You might like "Greatest Tank Battles" which pops up on Quest every now and again. Veterans are interviewed and their exploits and various aspects of the battles are illustrated via computer graphic reconstructions. It isn't perfect but it is far less error prone than some series nowadays which seem to me to be poorly researched and knocked up on the back of fag packet.
Greatest Tank Battles
I think Quest only have the first series and it may have just had a run out. Its worth looking out for though.
This episode of "Battlefield Mysteries" (same channel) concerning the death of Michael Wittman, the SS tank commander responsible for the lethal ambush of 7th Armoured Division at Villers-Bocage, is worth a look as well.

Bumping the thread on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first deployment of tanks in battle, at 5.30am this morning. There's a replica Mark (IV?) tank parked in Trafalgar Square today. I always preferred the Mark I's myself, with the steering carriage at the back and the chicken-netting frame above to stop the Germans throwing grenades onto the top.

BBC4 tonight 20.00
Tank Men To mark the 100th anniversary of the first time tanks were used in battle, Rob Bell tells the story of the First World War tank men.
Why not spare half an hour to remember these brave men?
It was pretty grim for the eight strong crew crossing shell cratered no-mans land and continually being bounced around in one of these oversized steel cans. The tanks had no suspension, were incredibly noisy, infernally hot inside and they quickly filled up with noxious engine fumes. Amputations, head injuries and broken limbs were commonplace even when out on peaceful manoeuvres.
Still, you were safe from enemy fire surely?
- safer than the P.B.I. following up behind you for sure, but tanks attracted concentrated fire from machine guns, trench mortars and artillery etc. and soon the rivets holding the thing together were red hot, lethal and whizzing around you inside the tank.
They were very unreliable and prone to breakdown as well - captured crews could expect short shrift from the enemy.

Watched it on Netflix last week really enjoyed it. Does anyone now if the free pic game steel panthers runs on windows 7 or 10 save me doing it 😜saw the article about Wittman above played that scenario from both sides many times on that game and it was shocking how much easier it was as just him compared to all of the allies

I did try putting it on my brothers PC running Win 7 but it wasn't straightforward. It had to run windowed. I did get it on but it was laggy and sluggish. There are instructions in the help file I think, or on-line on the forums maybe. If I'd had another hour or so I'd probably have sorted it out. I'll put a link up when I find it. Wittman was lethal. If you get SP going, have a crack at his notorious single handed Tiger 1 attack on 7th Armoured at Villers-Bocage, June 44. In 15 minutes he destroyed 14 British tanks (assorted Shermans and Cromwells), 15 APC's ( Rams and so on) and 2 Anti-Tank guns. EDIT der..... Sorry mate I'm guessing that is the scenario you are referring to! I didn't realise it was on SP!

I'm heading off to the Ardennes over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Looking forward to getting a close-up view of the King Tiger in La Gleize, as well as visits to the museum in Bastogne and the Easy Company foxholes in the Bois Jacques.

Should be very interesting. We went to Normandy a couple of years back and visited all the landing beaches, Pegasus Bridge, St Mere Eglise, bocage and so on. We're going Spain in May on a Civil War military history camping expedition.
