Excellent thread ....it's great when a thread appears on here that is of personal interest .....enjoyable to take part in How'd I know you'd like this thread mate? Anyway, for me: The Mark 1 Abrams The German WWII half track - German SdKfz 251 I think (very dissapointed that they didn't have any examples at Bovington). The M3 Half-track Tiger I and II (King Tiger)

In the yard next to Brookfields I'm trying to visualise it as its 30 odd years since I've been around there .....to the left of Brookfields was Lewis's Ice Cream and to the right was the working men's club ? Where is the scrapyard ? Opposite brookfields toy shop come down one shop, better still, opposite the workingmens club...their was a small yard.....not sure it was a scrap yard or what it was before For years now they've had a small jet aircraft in there (do'er upper)....I moved up here in 2002 and the aircraft had been there years then Never seen a tank, but there again haven't been past for a while.

Tankees are cunts Yours A wet, cold, wish he was undercover instead of a hole in the ground infantry man There is a serious point here too. It's all well and good admiring the technical capabilities of war machinery and glib phrases like "favourite tank", "anti-personnel capacity" and "armour piercing and HE shells" trip lightly off the tongue. It's all a bit arms length from the reality though isn't it?
I doubt a thread entitled "Post Your Favourite Bayonet" would stay up for long. A bit too close to the knuckle.
I might get away with "What's the best anti-fungal foot powder" though.

I recognise it now of course ....don't recall it by name though , I'd assumed it was an uprated Cromwell ....Good call on that one it's seems to be a similar concept of having a heavier gunned tank operating alongside main stream vehicles as was employed with the Centurion / Conquerer mix of the 50's and 60's ...a little like the Tank Destroyer concept used by the Germans . I suppose it's the final example of the cruiser/cavalry tank concept. Fast, under armoured but with the biggest gun it can carry.

Yes , tank warfare and design has evolved a long way since the day of the cruiser tanks .

Don't know too much about tanks but that Fury got some criticism for unrealism Then again it is Hollywood! I'm a bit hazy on it now. The scene with the Tigers might have been marginally over the top but it definitely did seem to capture for me the "nerves of steel" requirement for Sherman crews. Very scary and got the adrenalin going.
The later scene with the German infantry being held up by the single tank in the road and attacking it over and over again seems nonsense. Primarily they needed to get up that road smartish. Seems to me they would surely have gone around the Sherman and left it for somebody else to deal with.

A similar analogy can be given to the superb Panther ...wonderfully streamlined design but as with all German Tanks over engineered .....a nightmare when repairs to tracks and running gear was required . T34 crews were able to carry out their own maintenance of this sort in a matter of a few hours due to the simplicity of the tanks construction . Yes agreed Bisp - the Panther was an amazing tank also with the lethal 88mm ...........the later Shermans weren't too shabby either but no match for the German tanks one on one.... There's a Sherman tank in a scrapyard down in Dresden (near Longton park not in Germany!!) - keep meaning to pop in and have a closer look - a great model shop down there as well (yeh sad I know - just like the smell of glue ????) Welcome to the thread mate. Nice pic of the JS. I was going to post the "Easy Eight" Sherman M4A3E8(76)W today but I had another idea instead. Similarly the German Panther developed in response to the Russian T34. Incidentally, the Panther's gun was still the 75mm L/70. It gets overshadowed by the Tiger but for me a better overall tank.

WW2 For me:-
Soviet Union - T34/85 German - Panther France - Somua S35 Japan - The Bicycle probably. or the Chi Ha Italy - Mmm... Semovente 75 or captured T34s on the Eastern Front.
Britain - Sherman Firefly which was superior to the... US - Sherman Easy Eight
UK Home guard - The Beaverette.
The US aversion to the 17pdr is a mystery to me. And dismissing Hobart's Funnies was a mistake. A few Sherman DD's would have come in handy on Omaha IMHO.

I think that we're several drawbacks to the 17 pdr that put the Americans off the gun .....problems with the size of the turret not being able accommodate the gun because of its bigger breach meant some redesign , it also meant that the gun was not able to recoil effectively and so the whole vehicle had to absorb the shock of the gun firing ....which must have been a pretty bone crunching experience for the crews !

It's interesting to note that the mythical " 88 " as fitted in the Tiger and the 75 s fitted in the marvellous Panther were both inferior in terms of " stopping power " to the 17 pdr ...a little known fact that would cause some surprise given the point of view that " German tanks were better than British ones "

Serious question from a novice as regards these things, but at what point does a tank cease to be a tank and become a mobile howitzer?
Is it to do with the presence/lack of a traditional turret or is it purely down to the calibre of gun?

Size of gun counts .....certainly in a rotating turret armour plate that allows survivability in vehicle to vehicle combat , Self Propelled Artillery are never intended to engage tanks or any other AFV's .
