Are you thinking of growing your hair and going for the scruffy look? It's never done me any harm. Come on it was tied up very impressively when we met

8 miles very early this morning keeping the legs ticking over along the canal and around Westport Lake. Spotted a large carp floating on the canal surface I hadn't realised there were carp and of that size there.

Had a great week or so away in Sussex and Kent, glamping in a Yurt on the Knepp wilding estate and staying in a cottage attached to an oast house on a small orchard farm, the black door to the left on the picture on the website is where we stayed heartsdelightfarm.co.uk/ they make their own juice and sell it in local shops, and grow wildflowers and sell on the seeds to farms and other institutes, also own woods which are being managed for bio diversity and have local primary school trips in teach kids all about it. It was next to the Elham Valley way and loads of walking/running routes around. Knepp was just great, knepp.co.uk/ the amount of wildlife was amazing, first morning, early morning run, wild tamworth pigs, long horned cattle and fallow deer, and saw about 15 storks rising on thermals. Went on an off track guided safari, little owl, green woodpecker, hobby, so many dragonflies and hornets, slow worms, grass snakes, wild red deer stag, storks on the nest, flocks of goldfinches 20 plus, the landscape was nothing I've seen before, you can imagine how it was in the iron age and saxon times etc. Beavers get reintroduced next month Onto 'The Blean' ancient woodland SSSI explorekent.org/activities/blean-woods-national-nature-reserve/ lots of walk routes where no dogs are allowed, excellent lots of wood ant nests, so many bird species, and so peaceful Are you thinking of growing your hair and going for the scruffy look? Hopefully most people watched David Attenborough last week, this shows what can be done with little interference, just let nature take back over some land and watch it flourish knepp.co.uk/rewildingkneppvideo

Out running again early this morning and another amazing sunrise - all the slight dips and valleys hereabouts were caressed by a very low, thin mist, so as the sun rose, shining through trees and mist it created an effect like a gigantic cinema projector projecting through smoke. That's hardly an elegant visual metaphor, but it really was very beautiful. Last 2 days of summer if forecasters are correct - 23C in Leeds tomorrow, but 11C on Wednesday

Lots of autumn colour starting to appear round and about up here now, very soothing in thin autumn sunshine. This turned up up on a street only about 10 miles away from me the other week - never seen one myself in the wild, and apparently first sighting 'in Leeds' in 40 years, although most residents of Collingham would no doubt have a fainting fit if they found out they were classed as part of the Heart of Darkness : www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/environment/rare-hoopoe-bird-spotted-pottering-along-streets-leeds-first-sighting-40-years-2987739Does anyone know what happened to that vulture that was ranging around Derbyshire / North Staffordshire a month or so ago? Has it gone back over to France / Spain?

Ahead of expected stricter lockdown measures up here this week, took the opportunity to meet my old Mum and Dad outside at Trentham Gardens today - I've been dozens of times, but it really was quite stunning from the viewing platform where the Hall was, a dozen different shades of gold to the plants, the lake sparkling, big galleon clouds to the middle and far distance. Dreamlike, almost.
Came back to Leeds 'the long way round' via Leek, Buxton, Glossop, Woodhead, Penistone etc. There were apocalyptic looking skies over Burslem and Tunstall, but the play of light and shade up on the Roaches and Ramshaw Rocks was some of the best I have seen in years.

As it's Hallowe'en tomorrow here's a quick mention about pumpkins: Just in case anyone buys one for decoration and then doesn't want to roast/eat it or make soup you might like to know that slices of leftover fresh pumpkin should be put out in the garden for birds, hedgehogs, etc., to eat, rather than just throwing it in the bin. This includes the seeds, which are great for bird food although most people always seem to throw them away. Thx and......... bon appΓ©tit. π π π π π π π π π π π

Working in upper Wensleydale yesterday and around the Eden valley. Brisk winds kept blowing heavy showers through west to east, resulting in some of the most complete and brightest rainbows I have seen in years. The Leeds hoopoe has cleared off back to the Continent I assume (and who can blame it ) as no recent sightings. The bearded vulture spotted over the Peak District and Staffordshire Moorlands in July apparently flew back over the Channel on the 16th October, probably heading for the French Alps where she was hatched last year.

As I got down to the stream early yesterday morning I had the rare treat of a White Egret taking off. the great white one or the little egret ? The Little one. I regularly see Herons taking off as I approach the stream I did spot it from about 300 yards away dropping down into the stream so as I approached the bridge I was looking for it. They're so white against the sky, trees and foilage you can see them a mile off. It flew off a quite a decent speed.

Our for an early run this morning, and caught a flock of c.50 lapwings performing a mini-murmuration in the light just before dawn. As they wheeled low across the ground, their white undersides formed a beautiful contrast to the dark earth of a freshly ploughed field. Then they landed as one, and became virtually invisible amongst the furrows - could have been a spread of old stubble when viewed from a distance. Fantastic stuff. Lovely sunrise too.

No shortage of Buzzards around these parts, got this one today. They're absolutely everywhere Chuffed there must have been a breeding boom going on over the last 20 years. Thereβs loads opposite to us, in fact when the wife was out walking last week to juvenile buzzards came hopping up to her and sure I saw a red kite above me earlier
