REM my favourite band for a good chunk of time from their first album. They got out while the going was good, as U2 should have done long ago. I've just been ploughing my way through their albums again and would say that Reveal was the last really good album with the last three tailing off.

Agreed...I didn't really bother with those last three, but their body of work up to then was astounding really. Those first 8 as a run are hard to equal in terms of consistency and quality in my opinion.

Very quickly got into their back catalogue and then got all their new albums after that. Definitely one of my favourite bands. Agree that their first 8 were the best. Still a smattering of gems on those last three (Ascent Of Man, Supernatural, Until Day Is Done, Mr Richards). Ok maybe not the final album. Funnily enough I’ve not really listened to them for ages (so much other great music out there) but randomly listed to the whole of New Adventures In Hi-Fi the other day and was struck how much interesting stuff is on it. A major revisit required I think!

I can only echo the REM sentiments.. a mate gave me a comp. tape {he'd taped off Peel I think} of a burgeoning American college rock 'new Paisley Underground' scene: The Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, Green on Red and REM. It was 'South Central Rain' that particularly grabbed me. Got to see them on 'The Fables of the Reconstruction' tour at Liverpool Royal Court. {Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt in the crowd and saw Pete Wylie in the kebab house after.} That early run of albums {1+ each year} was immense... folk rock, to an eviscerating rawk band... 'Losing My Religion' and 'Everybody Hurts' had become ubiquitous/unavoidable and by 'Monster' I think I'd reached REM saturation... Fairly late to 'New Adventures', but I agree it's up there with their finest, perhaps would have been a great bookend.. Nevertheless in light of their mighty canon, who am I to begrudge them a few 'OK' albums.. Over the last few years I've picked up 'Up' and 'Reveal' {Hanley Poundland}, have been rotating them recently, and think they are 'OK', some nice moments of trickery like the gurgling electronics in 'Reno'.. I do think I need to revisit 'Green'...

Has this fella stepped into iggy shors, or even lux’s …. I think he has his own particular charm, not the louche cool of Lux, nor the dynamics of the Ig. A mate saw then in Manc in Spring, all was going swimmingly until 'Sports' kicked in and the whole crowd chucked their drinks at the sage.. my mate stood next to the soundboard saw a full pint projectile hit it square on.. Power down for twenty minutes, everything off. Yer man lay at the front of the stage somewhat like a beacherd whale.. had a nap and a fag and they marched on, but my mate reckoned the momentum had gone.. a bit of a literal damp squib.. 'Research Chemicals' a particular fave, modern classic.

They could have called it a day then and I wouldn’t have begrudged them. Think ‘98 was the last time I saw them. Saw them on a really early tour in a small B’ham uni hall then Rock City in Nott’ham. One of the great American bands.
