Very much of a time.. I was flicking through a leatherette 7" box of Who re issue picture discs, Purple Hearts, Chords, Merton Parkhas etc, a mate had a clear out, he was a 'Jimmy' inspired Scooter Boy, me not so much though I enjoyed the Jam/Undertones efforts by The Chords.. That late '70's melting pot threw up all sorts of scenes, sub scenes and such.. the fracturing of musikal tribalism perhaps? Have you heard of Cafe Royal Books? A series of photo journals, documenting social history, music scenes and such... I watched this whole episode of Eggs TV so you don't have to.. skip to 24.35 for proprietor Craig Atkinson. Looks great, but a little rich.. No I hadn't heard of Cafe Royal Books before and thank you for your selflessness in enduring Egg TV (just WTF is that?) in order to provide the link at 24.35. And you assumed right, Craig is right up my street, although I would disagree with his suggestion that there is very little documentary evidence from the scenes he describes. I have a veritable collection of books, focused on the different counter cultures we've experienced as a nation, especially of free festivals and DIY parties. From Penny Rimbaund, Andy Worthington and CJ Stone (I organised a Crass gig at my youth centre when I was 16) to Mod, Punk and House biographies, there is no other topic that interests me more than British youth culture. At the end of the day, we are all "Wally". I nearly posted a video of the "Battle of the Beanfield" but chickened out and thought I'd play (extremely) safe, with this instead ...

It's a pity they didn't capture more, it's a really good tune ... My algorythm threw up 4 mins of it from Friday night, Colchester.. a kind of home fixture, still undecided whether it's a v. enthusiastic crowd or a bevy of backing singers, more time I'll have a search for the whole gig, sounds a blast..

New discovery. Young North Carolina band. Some great guitar and pedal steel work on the album.

That's fantastic.. I also like Nick Cave's take on a stormy night in Mississippi Are you familiar with Mojo Nixon's tribute?

At the end of the day, we are all "Wally". I nearly posted a video of the "Battle of the Beanfield" but chickened out and thought I'd play (extremely) safe, with this instead ... To begin with major props for the Crass Gig, coool as fuck.. One of my earliest gig experiences was a Crass gig Tunstall Town Hall, I'd spent me pocket money in Shipley's Arcade {on Galaxian}, I think it was a quid but Annie Anxiety, resplendent in bin liners let me in. School colour code not uniform, must have been the last year... Obv. blew me away. Luckily the visual and audio arts have intertwined and are growing up together.. I used to subscribe to several maga/zines that gave equal weight/emphasis to the music and the photography/visuals {'Careless Talk' Everett True, 'Comes With A Smile' etc}.. there is loads of it out there as you say.. I think the uniqueness Craig Cafe Royal refers to is the breadth of his Archive, the 'in one place' array of captured images, even if only on his unruly shelves.. 700+ weekly programme/booklets, covering architecture etc etc.. very British moments in time. Scanning through the catalogue, music, youth culture related is a minor proportion.. The cost, the smaller format, the amount of 'stuff' I've alreeady got, and nowadays easy access on t'web mitigates against me investing.. having said that though, I fancy a few titles relevant to me that I've started to check on ebay, a speculative purchase to get the feel maybe.. while I hope he does an Anthology Boxset dedicated to the muzak and that.. keep the storage tidy, or see if me local tuesday Mobile Library could order it in for me to loan,, Eggs TV, like the band The Lovely Eggs is a Curate's Egg, a bit reminiscent of 'Why Don't You..?'. Hit and miss, I enjoy the features.. Ian Mackaye tour tales, Stuart Lee's Music Hall Lives and Graves, Andy Votel of Twisted Nerve Records: Pork Pie {with an egg} and Prog on a Peak District Peak played on a portable player etc.. At best the Lovely Eggs are a mix of White Stripes, Pixies with the sardonic Lancashire wryness of the HManHBiscuit, on Aceeed... at worst a bit awkward infantile inconsequential and shit.. TV show the same.. It's odd, unnerving and slightly altered state as it goes, particularly Super Furry Gryff stuck on a roof, Comfrey and... etc...

Love the 'Said the People' track, the Dinosaur usually do the stop starts or twist and u turns in tracks, they/he drops the quirks and just ploughs ahead on this, it's ace.. {fyi at 51.08 in the above Eggs TV episode there's a visual {artily constructed} visual representation of 'Start Choppin' by the mighty DJnr.. amongst my favourite log burner prep for winter tunes..}
