This is an absolutely incredible version of GBTMR. It's clearly Havens' vocal but beyond that, where has it come from? I'd love to know the story behind it.
EDIT: I've found it, god knows how the Apple Scruffs can claim it as their own!? It's a straight lift from this performance ...

This was the first (and sadly only) time I got to see him, his "encore" was true soul, you're so beautiful to me ...
The caption says it was from '87, it's wrong, it's from '82.

It'll be really interesting to see how she approaches it ... there's now been four albums since her last concerts in the UK, she's not played a single track from Norman Rockwell and everything beyond on these shores. Personally I'd be happy if she sacks everything off prior to that and just concentrates on the last four albums ...

I'd never listened properly to any Richie Havens before so I thought I'd give that a quick couple of minutes last night. I ended up listening to the full 40 plus minutes of it. Absolutely spellbinding stuff. Through headphones there's a beautiful warm sound to the vocals. What an experience to have actually been there in person.

I really do wish you would post your tunes individually, rather than in sets of three (or four). What's Going On and Isn't It A Pity are two of my all time favourite tunes but I have no other choice but to (sadly) give them a single like between them ...
Ha Ha Paul I get it that this particular idiosyncracy may be irksome but it serves serveral functions for me, and my approach to this marvellous thread, over and above the obvious of three being the magic number.... It's like a journal of a musical journey, a reflection of the mood music in my environs at the time. I pull a few things off the shelves, things forgotten, neglected etc have a listen/re listen and then go down google/youtube rabbit holes for live/alternatives, solo and stuff and hoist a selection on here. The three tunes are carefully curated, if not always themed, a mini-mix as it were. Three together allows for some fade in fade out, primitive beat matching, segues and such...singular posts risk separation.. {which'd break me head} and while one track may represent 'what I'm listening to right now', the three in a mix reflects far better 'where my head was at at the time'... a mini mix tape of the day, hectic and eclectic. I pften go back, in review to say page 112 see what was in the mix, does it still work, did it ever etc.. I suppose the 'like' thing is low on my priorities. I'm really glad you found the One Shot Richie, I was going to lead with that in my next missive.. it's amazing been an earworm since I picked out some Richie a couple of weeks back {his version of 'I Started a Joke... Smiths natch..}, that live version, lively lovely cello the lot, perfect....Ace that you saw him.. I was blissfully unaware until I bought a cheapo Director's Cut Woodstock DVD, blew me away, as did the Ravi Shankar set... and The Bob The Bear Hite footage... I did see Bonobo in Brum about a decade ago though.. Any way Paul, Bombardment deserve a share of the like, they're my current favourite female fronted french anarcho d beat punk outfit, self confessed Discharge obsessives.. I am adaptable but it's currently only GEL that stand alone, in a post... I'm wondering if the Three Degrees'll do their version of 'Pity' at the Crowning.. I do like Fred Again thus far, not dug deep, kinda rings a bell, I've enjoyed what you've posted, the vocal sample can be a bit cliche but yer man handles it real well, I love the chilled minimalism, reminiscent of Cinematic Orchestra, the visuals are good but it stands up as a listening experience too.. mint.. The beauty of this thread... new stuff, unfamiliar etc...

How will she cope with the outdoor gig then Paul?. Went to Springsteen there in 2012(?) and the sound was in and out plus seeing him was a tall order. Such a shame she's not doing somewhere indoor like the O2.

Such a shame she's not doing somewhere indoor like the O2. She's no stranger to massive outdoor shows Mike, I think it's more a case of which Lana turns up on the day. We know that she isn't a natural performer, I've said to you before, if we could go right back to the beginning and start the whole thing with Weyes Blood fronting del Ray's songs, then that (imo) would have been the dream ticket. I first saw her at the Manchester Apollo about 10 years ago and she was pretty ropey to be honest but I've also seen her at Lollapalooza in Brazil in front of a 100,000 on YT and she was pretty decent. She's headlining the Other stage at Glastonbury a week or so before this show, so that might give us a pretty good indication of what she will be like (she was absolutely pants the last time she played the Pyramid stage). I think the reckoning is that about 4/10 shows are generally good with the other 60% being anything from okay to pretty poor. Hyde Park could be absolutely anywhere on that scale. Thing is, Lana audiences are utterly fanatical and the atmosphere they generate is absolutely off the scale and regardless of what happens on the stage, a good night will definitely be had by all. As for the Hyde Park sound that's a complete lottery too, been to many shows there over the years and it's never consistent. For the Neil Young/Bob Dylan show, the sound was literally blowing (away) in the wind and you could hear all the audience chatter around you but at the Tom Petty show, the sound was bone crushingly loud, each beat of the kick drum was like getting punched in the stomach and it genuinely made you want to vomit (one of the loudest gigs I've ever been to). Go figure ...

Ha! True dedication Paul. I recall her at Glasto and kudos for dropping in Brazil there. Off to see Springsteen in Paris in mid May and it's indoors in a 40,000 capacity state of the art rugby stadium. I was online for two hours and got great tickets. Looking forward to a seat, beer close at hand and a timely wee during Dancing in the Dark as I don't like it! Will see him at Villa Park a month after and will probably wave him goodbye. He's not touring the world again any time soon and I've seen him plenty.
Been quiet on the gig front this year and it's a post Covid thing really but getting back into the swing now.

Great stuff Mike, next time I see you, remind me to tell you my Springsteen at Wembley Stadium 1985 story, it's a funny one. We've got loads coming up ... John Fogerty, Roger Waters, Richard Ashcroft, Peter Gabriel, Ibbio Sound Machine, Fat Freddy's Drop, Lana, The Who (in Brighton), Pendulum, Limp Bizkit, Christine and the Queens, Madonna and Norah Jones, it's going to be a bonkers summer! Are you going to EOTR?

You're doing Madonna???? What did you pay? Saw Peter Gabriel on the SO revamp tour back in 2016 (?). He was excellent. Yep, going to EOTR mate. I was coming up for the QPR game this Saturday but struggling with a chest thing and it's looking doubtful. Would be good to catch up again but maybe next season!!!

A lot of people associate Havens with being the opening act at Woodstock but what they don't realise is, that he was never supposed to be the first on the bill ... All the roads to the farm were completely impassable with stationery traffic and as a result, none of the bands scheduled to play had been able to get anywhere near the site, the whole thing was running massively late and yet a single artist hadn't even performed, so the organisers asked Richie if he would fly in by helicopter with his acoustic guitar and placate the massive crowd that had amassed in front of the stage.
Which he did do.
But every time he finished his (45 min) set, the promoters pushed him back out there to do it again, whilst they attempted to arrange access to the site for the other bands. After TWO hours of playing, he'd had enough and decided to literally compose something brand new on the spot and it was at this moment (based around the classic, standard 'Motherless Child'), that 'Freedom' was born. The guy is literally making this up as he goes along, in front of half a million people and none of them even realised! When Richie took to the stage at Woodstock the song didn't even exist and by the time he left it, it had become one of the most iconic songs of the counter culture ...

I was 16, there with my first girlfriend and he closed that year's festival, immediately following Juding Tzuke, who had been playing in the rain with these amazing green lazers, they were very new at the time (sadly the video doesn't remotely do them justice - or actually, maybe it was just the drugs!) and then the rain stopped and Richie came on and everybody (well in all honesty, it was only about 25 thousand) knew they were experiencing something very special. Still one of the best nights of my life ...

This is absolutely amazing footage (not seen it before), it's actually recorded only months before Punk is sprung upon us for the very first time but yet, here is Bowie presenting us with proto post punk, foreshadowing the likes of Magazine and the Gang of Four etc. and bypassing actual punk itself altogether.
Genius.
