Norman Rockwell is my favourite album of the last 20 years and all though it has received huge critical acclaim (but no Grammy ... duh! ), it is (in my humble opinion) going to take history to recognise just what a masterpiece it truly is. We had tickets to see her play it in Manchester and Barcelona but going forwards, when it comes to live shows, it will be relegated to just another part of her amazing canon of work, so desperately disappointed that we didn't get to see her play it live. Straight off the desk ... Really struggling to keep up with this thread over the last few months with too much work and play however I did intend not to let this post pass me by. After your, let's say, heavy recommendation of this album last summer I decided to purchase it and basically haven't stopped playing it since. It's highly unusual to have an album of 14 tracks with none that you want to skip. I've struggled to work out my favourite track over the course of the last 14 months or so because of the seriously high quality of the songs. Lyrically the album is top class with a delivery to match with a fabulous sound. I also got hold of Ultraviolence and Honeymoon but they didn't have the same impact on my ears. I'd purchased Born to die back in the day but found it a little hit and miss. Anyway the reason for making this post is if anyone wants to listen to a fabulous album it's worth a listen

I first dabbled with this thread a year or so ago and I remember being somewhat taken aback by the surely exaggerated claims being made about this album. The first track I played was The Greatest and having had my interest further stimulated by the lyrical reference within to The Beach Boys and Dennis Wilson, I gave the whole album a listen. I freely admit to struggling with much contemporary music, and was not familiar with her work at all, but I really enjoyed this album and the CD duly arrived from Santa in my Christmas stocking. I love the distinctive sound of the voice, there's some really lovely melodies in there, and the quality of the songwriting is excellent throughout. My only (minor) criticism would be that when I play the whole album I find it all a little low key and lacking in dynamics. Favourite tracks: NFR, Mariners Apartment Complex, The Greatest, Bartender.

My only (minor) criticism would be that when I play the whole album I find it all a little low key and lacking in dynamics. Favourite tracks: NFR, Mariners Apartment Complex, The Greatest, Bartender. I love this thread because I've found so much music that ordinarily I would have missed, almost at times too much new music and it's great that the thread led you to finding NFR. The line in your post that I've highlighted, is in my opinion, the very reason NFR works so beautifully. Personally, I think all of her records prior to NFR have (to varying degrees) been (pretty badly) compromised by the producer attempting to add some dynamism into the songs, when they simply didn't need it in the first place, the songs ended up being smothered by layers of unnecessary studio guff that almost killed them off but somehow, those magical songs (just about) managed to surface for air. However when she teamed up with Jack Antonoff, he finally brought to the table, what so many of us had been previously crying out for ... less is more and now we could finally see and hear her incredible songwriting via the vehicle it was surely always meant to have been. I'd love her to go back and revisit so many of those incredible (over produced) tracks from her back catalogue and redo them with Antonoff as there is some legendary songwriting lost in there but of course it's obviously not going to happen. But had she been with him from the very start, I truly believe that she would be regarded today with the same reverence as (say) Joni Mitchell. She's still got plenty of time for that though of course, can't wait for the next album and I so hope she keeps it simple again ...
