My favourite song of all time ... period. Three of my favourite artists of all time, doing it, the first from Michael Hedges, just a few days before he sadly passed ... I think I was paying attention did you not say a while back that A whiter shade of pale is the best song of all time? Here's another one.... Are you sure? I might have said something like "Imagine knowing you've written the greatest song of all time" (as voted for in numerous polls over the years) or something like that but I'm pretty certain I didn't say it was my favourite song. It's a magnificent song mind and not many people have (quite rightly) attempted to better the original. The Dylan version of AATW isn't my favourite version either, far from it. But it is an incredible song, there is something otherworldly about it which seems to totally possess many (but not all ... I'm looking at you Bono! ) of those that cover it. Obviously there are hundreds of Dylan covers (some excellent ones at that) but All Along The Watchtower (for me) transcends everything he ever wrote but ultimately, it was other artistes who took it to that special place.

On a similar vein all the great Beatles covers actually are better than the Beatles versions.

Yes that was the quote. I know what you mean about the song though, it's got that Summertime vibe going on and is open to interpretation.

'WTSMG' 25 years old today! I've only ever twice pulled the car over and actually stopped completely because a record came on the radio that I hadn't heard before, funnily enough the first time was when I was driving into Leeds and the second time (Champagne Supernova) was when I was leaving Leeds, even though I've never lived in Leeds, both times, within about 12 months of each other. The other time was when this came on ...

Wildflowers is a massively overlooked Petty album, it really is superb. My favourite track from it and certainly one of my favourite Tom Petty songs ever ... There's a line in it where he says "Most of the things I worry about, never happen anyway" and that line jumped out at me from the first time I heard it. It wasn't until many years later I heard an interview with him, where he told the story of how his younger brother had given him a positive affirmation book as a present and that quote was on one of it's pages and it touched him so much, that he based an entire song around that single line. He very rarely played it live but I couldn't believe it and had tears in my eyes at the front of the crowd when he played it at Hyde Park shortly before he died.
