How weird this thread comes back up. I was up in Elgin the back end of July and saw them lose to Hibs at home 0 v 2 in the Scottish League cup. Drove through Rothes a couple of times (Still stinks) . The weather was really weird . In the mid 20's and mild at night. Not like Scotland at all ! Gutted the Thunderton Pub has shut in Elgin Center. Had some great nights in that place. GD I find it weird how I've taken to "following" Rothes. Never been near the place, have no knowledge of it at all. It was just that I saw something about The Highland League a couple of years back and noticed this really shite side called Rothes, absolute rock-bottom, 1 point and a goal difference of -120. Since then I've kept an eye on them and become quite attached to them. I now find myself looking to see the results and giving it the clenched fist "yes!" if they've won, or a being a bit deflated if they've lost. I've even considered making a bit of a pilgrimage to Mackessack Park to see a game then I noticed it's effectively a 1,000 mile round trip.

I know Rothes very well. Lived in Elgin for 7 years in the late 80's early 90's (10 miles away). Used to regularly watch Highland league Football and have been to the ground a few times. There used to be two distilleries in Rothes and the stink was something else. Elgin then went onto Bigger and Better things (If the Scottish 3rd tier can be described as that) Another great day out for Highland Football was away at Huntley and Forres. GD Use to pass through Elgin on the way to Inverness about 20 years ago , parked on a big car park in town and went a nice curry house , then from Inverness down the A9 past Aviemore , fantastic views and countryside 👍

On a really good run leaving Friday evening from Elgin to Stoke arriving about 2 am I could drive it in 6 1/2 hours but it was normally more like 7 1/2 hours. It was a long drive back on Sunday if Stoke were shite (most of the time) plus having a hangover ! GD

It is a fantastic place especially if you like golf. A course every 5 miles or so. If up there visit Culloden Moor the most disturbing place I have ever visited. An eerie quietness, no birds singing. The people on the main are great but you can understand their wariness and dislike of the English as most are ancestors of Jacobites, see Culloden!

Mr burger , Called into the Culloden Moor Inn while is was up there . Many years ago MAG (motorcycle action group) which I was involved in used to meet there. It's been totally refurbished now and is quite a cool place. The Moor itself is weird. Were all the plinths there detailing where the clans were and what happened to them when you visited ? GD

Quick update on the Mighty Rothes. Up to 7th in The Highland League now, plus a 4-3 win away at Caledonian Braves on Saturday in the 1st round of the Scottish Cup. If The Mighty Rothes can turn it round so can we. I take it someone from the club has watched Rothes players at least 25 times??

GD There was a visitors centre and the barn 'we' set fire to, with people inside! The Moor itself was just an open space with lots of stones dotted about commemorating various clans, I assumed, where they were buried.

Is their messageboard rammed with mard-arses pissing their knickers and demanding Steve Bruce to be brought in? Why would they? They’ve won 2 games of football.

Latest update on the Mighty Rothes.
Won again last Satdee, 3-1 home to Wick Academy, making it 4 wins on the bounce, up to the dizzy heights of 5th in the Highland League now.
Considering what a basket case they were when they first caught my eye it's quite a change in fortunes.
Perhaps we should have a word with them to see what their secret is.

Rothes. Are they Fort William in disguise?
Mention of some strange sounding, never previously heard of, clubs apparently existing in the Scottish leagues on this thread. I suppose there must be merit in following a Highland league team, or a club outside the assumed "elite" of Scottish football. Perhaps just put a pin in a map and see what it gives you.
Reminds me that when I was little I thought that all the Welsh towns were named after Rugby Clubs, like Pontarddulais and Aberavon, because I only heard of them because their scores were read out on TV on an early Saturday evening.

Lower league Scottish Football has long been a strange world, of obscure teams, run down grounds and sparse crowds, at least as it appears and is reported south of the border. Things may of course have changed considerably in the last few years but traditionally there have been many jokes made at the expense of the poor struggling Scots. The story certainly used to be told of the local tannoy announcer/ radio reporter at an outpost of scottish football, whose favourite line before the match was: "I'll just run through the crowd changes."

When I lived in Elgin, Rothes used to average between 150/200 per game depending who they were playing.

Considering what a basket case they were when they first caught my eye it's quite a change in fortunes. Perhaps we should have a word with them to see what their secret is. Wick Academy is my local Highland League team. Their last home game was on the 14 th of September and since then they have travelled down the A9 to Inverurie ,Fort William , Huntly and Rothes. We don't have motorways or even dual carriageways up here and it's a long tedious drive to Inverness and beyond. According to the John O'Groat Journal Wick missed a host of opportunities and had the majority of possession. I used to go over to Wick to watch them at their windswept ground next to the town cemetery. In those days I used to have my little transistor radio in my pocket and my earphones on listening for the updates of the Stoke games. Since the advent of the now defunct FlashSportsStreams , Starstreams.tv ( I live in hope and still subscribe ) and Robbie's streams I now sit in front of my coal fire and watch the live streams of Stoke games. Incidentally , people born and raised in Wick are known as Dirty Wickers - and I married one of them !

The Mighty Rothes now up to 4th in the Highland League following a 2-0 away win at Nairn County. They're currently on a 6 game unbeaten run and now have 38 points after 16 games.
That's some turnaround from where they were a couple of seasons ago.
It goes to show there'e always hope even in the darkest times.

According to wiki the population is 1251 as of 2011. So effectively 10% of the town goes to the match. Pretty decent that.
