I spent a few summers in Rothes as a kid as I've got family up there. My uncle has owned the butchers on Rothes High Street for decades and used to organize an annual raft race on the Spey. Was a cracking day out, flying down the river with a bunch of pissed up jocks. First time I went up there as a kid, I got slapped in the park by some kids for being a "wee foreign cunt" As GD said, the stink from the distilleries was horrendous. The only thing of any note in Rothes is a half-arsed castle wall up on a hill. Still used to look out for their results as a kid, but haven't paid much attention to them for years. Those stats are ridiculous, they're conceding an average of 5.5 goals per game!

Well, you were a wee foreign cunt so can't really fault them I suppose an English kid with a broad Stoke accent could be considered a foreigner up in the Scottish Highlands. There was definitely a language barrier for both parties. Slapping aside, they were generally a good bunch up there.

Stoke may be struggling at the start of this season but the mighty Speysiders are off to a flyer! They beat Keith 4-2 on Saturday (not sure if that's a team or just a bloke named Keith, but who cares, a win's a win!) to record their second win of the season, take their points total to a whopping 7 and have reached the dizzy heights of 15th in the Highland League.

On holiday in the Highlands in early August 1978, driving out of Inverness towards Beauly, just before the Caledonian canal, my mate and I, both Stokies, noticed a small crowd of people entering a football ground which turned out to be that of Inverness Caledonian. We got the girls to drop us off and we watched "Callie" play Buckie Thistle in a Highland League game, the league starts early up there as they actually do have a winter break I believe.
We enjoyed it so much that we went again the following week to see them play Brora Rangers in a cup game. Inverness' star player was a forward called Roddy Donaldson who signed for Glasgow Rangers soon afterwards. There was flat fee to enter the ground and a bloke with a biscuit tin charged another 50p or so to let you enter the one stand and sit under cover.
It's amazing how the memory works, I couldn't remember my own fucking name after Stoke's display on Saturday but I can see this in my mind's eye as if it was yesterday. Can't remember the scores though.

We have talked about going to Rothes but if they have started to win a game or two we might have to find some other hapless saps. Or we could just stay and watch Stoke.

Just checked out the Rothes message board.
There is a thread on there about Stoke's form and the pure stink coming from benjaminbiscuits posts and the fact there is a wall on a hill in Newcastle.
No mention of outdoor toilets either, but there was a meeting place for knicker wetters near the Sir Stan Statue.
They talk about our form and laugh at poor Boro for dropping points against us as well, apparently should be ashamed of themselves!
Good read if any of you get a chance.

Up to 7th in The Highland League now, plus a 4-3 win away at Caledonian Braves on Saturday in the 1st round of the Scottish Cup.
If The Mighty Rothes can turn it round so can we.

Who the fuck drew against them? They should be ashamed. I once played for a pub team that was by far the worst team in the league, bar one. We got routinely beaten 4,5,6 goals and if memory serves, we won two games in the whole season. One was a 2-1 where we happened to play out of our skins, and the other was against the team that finished bottom, which we won 18-0. That was their best result of the season.

How weird this thread comes back up.
I was up in Elgin the back end of July and saw them lose to Hibs at home 0 v 2 in the Scottish League cup. Drove through Rothes a couple of times (Still stinks) . The weather was really weird . In the mid 20's and mild at night. Not like Scotland at all !
Gutted the Thunderton Pub has shut in Elgin Center. Had some great nights in that place.
