This isn't a which is best thread (I don't want to cause WW3) but I'm about to get one for my bday (mainly due to the fact the wife can't think of what to get me); and I hoping people can put on here what they like about their console not why the other one is shit so it'll help with which to go for.
Been gaming for years (snes,ps,ps2,xbox and current on 360) but really don't know which one to go for.
Any help

I've had my PS4 pretty much since they came out, and have no complaints.
PSN goes down once in a while but is usually only for a few hours. The graphics are good, the controllers are sturdy and last ages, and the games are n't that expensive any more.
From what I've heard, PS4 is more for people who want to use their console mainly for games, whereas Xbox1 is for people who want to do other things such as streaming at the same time.
If you have any mates who own consoles and play them, it's always a good option to buy the same one as them.

Xbox naturally will have more shooter type games, your Halo, Gears of War etc. also has a few games like Quantum Break and Crackdown coming out which are looking interesting
PS4 caters to a different type of gamer in my opinion, a lot of story driven games and generally more focus on the experience than replayability

You'll get a lot of people saying which console is better, but a lot of the arguments rarely take into account the actual games themselves. People go on about high graphics and high frames per second but, at the end of the day, I still play the likes of Streets of Rage and Sonic 2 over the latest games on either console. I have both consoles. I prefer buying single player games for the PS4 and multiplayer games on XBox One (this isn't taking into account exclusives, of course) but that's a lot to do with most of the people I know owning an Xbox. My advice would be go onto Metacritic and look at the top rated games. Look at the exclusives and find video reviews of them. You'll gain a better feel for both consoles that way.

Ultimately its your decision but surely there's a reason as to why the PS4 has sold 36 million units and the Xbone 20 million? Sony hit the ground running and don't look like slowing down any time soon with 2016 looking like one of the best years lineups for a good few years featuring many exclusives.
One thing Sony has nailed this gen is relationships with indie developers Rocket League, The Witness, Firewatch, Outlast, everyone's gone to rapture just to name a few all started or are exclusives on the PS4 and are some of my favourite games this gen.
The online debate is so narrow now its not worth debating Sony have come on leaps and bounds.

PS4 all day. Great line up, some great games already, Uncharted 4 to come soon, great machine too.
I also have an undying hatred of Microsoft, I cant explain it! I feel the same about Apple!

Although the Xbox has slightly inferior infrastructure, there's really nothing to separate the two like there were in generations gone by. It all comes down to what exclusives you prefer. As someone said above, I prefer the broader range of game types Playstation tend to come out with (last generation at least) and not a fan of Halo and Gears franchises so it's Playstation for me. I feel like the creativity in Sony's first part titles have dried up but again, Microsoft's titles just don't resonate with me at all.

Pick whichever one your mates have got. If you have history on Xbox and have a friends list there then get an Xbox One, if you have a history on the PS Network then get a PS4. If you have no history on either then ask your mates and family what they have and get that.
At launch the PS4 was way in front due to Microsoft's ineptitude but now thanks to a load of Microsoft U-turns they're not too far apart. But like I say, pick the one your mates play on.

Since you currently own an Xbox 360 get an Xbox One, backwards compatibility on the one means you'll probably be able to still play your 360 games on the Xbox One without having two consoles next to the TV. Also if your Xbox One is plugged into your main TV get a kinect, most people think they're useless but if you plug it into your sky box, virginmedia, freesat or normal TV you can walk in the room an just say Xbox on, Xbox watch bbc1, itv1 etc, fantastic feature if you've got a pint in one hand and a kebab in the other.

Cheers for the advice, I haven't responded before as been in hospital. Anyway although my mates who game have xbones I've gone for the ps4. The reason being what you lot said The comments about the actual games made sense (more into stuff with an actual story or something not of the norm) also people who have both always seem to go ps4 on cross platform games. (with having 2 young kids I can't be sure I'll be online at the same time as my mates)

I went for PS4 but I have to say I've been bitterly disappointed with the games that have been released.
