The Sentinel's preview of tonight's game says that a win tonight would put us in only our second League Cup semifinal! Seeing that we've been in two finals (against Leicester and Chelsea) I think we can assume that we were also in the semifinals in those years.
Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember that first league cup final of ours in 1964 against Leicester. After drawing 1-1 at the Vic we went to Filbert Street a week later only to lose 2-3 on the night and 3-4 on aggregate. Their wasn't a lot of enthusiasm for this competition back in the day and a lot of the top clubs didn't bother to enter I recall feeling that they didn't need the extra games added to a 42 game league season.
Well, if our local paper can't be bothered to remember it, then it is hardly surprising that our fans who were not around at the time, can't. Like Linx I can remember it. But, with it being a 2 leg final it didn't seem such a big deal - especially with the second leg being at Leicester so most of our fans were not there. The format of our 1972 win of a two legged semi and a final at Wembley is much better. Glad they have now got rid of replays though - as 1972 was an horrendous obstacle course which possibly cost us the FA Cup.
That's the first I've ever heard of it which I find strange, I will be quizzing my old man at the game tonight he's 73 so he could claim senility.
When I heard that a few years ago I thought it was wrong, as prior to Man City in FA Cup we'd never lost at Wembley, however , it is right as back then the final was over 2 legs home and away and we lost 4-3 to Leicester on aggregate. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_Football_League_Cup_Final

To be fair to the Sentinel, they only really started to give a shit about Stoke City in 2008. Before that, all they cared about was Stoke City related scandal and dragging our name through the shit.... And calling the soap dodgers "plucky Vale" !!

I don't know how far back you go, but in the 60s and 70s the Sentinel was pretty good as far as Stoke were concerned. I used to like Peter Hewitt's reports and, in those days, that was my major source of news about the club. Certainly, for most away games, I'd have been buggered without the Sentinel until I was in my mid to late teens and started to go to a few.

My debut season was 1991/92 and I quickly started to see a lot of bias from the Sent'nul towards the Vale. I picked up what seemed like negativity towards Stoke and maybe a direct intent to attack the club and it's fans with regularity. At least that's how I, and many fellow Stokies saw it...

I'm with Lakeland in the pro Sentinel view. As a kid, we used to wait for the Football Final, in those days a pink broadsheet, to drop onto the mat on a Saturday evening. Full match report, all 4 league tables and other news. Stoke were always in bold in the First Division table, with Vale and Crewe rattling around in Division 4.
Probably got it within a couple of hours of the final whistle, which puts even ChiefDelilah's sterling efforts to shame in the digital age.

Unlike the national press, which was full of Stoke City stories when we were in Division Two.
For all the Sentinel's faults, and there is many, they were our main source of news when the rest of the country couldn't tell you who our manager was. And they will be again if/when we return to being another jobbing, middle-of-the-road football league club.

Of course, they were our only source of information at that time. But it's also true they went out of their way to fuel the fire about the Brit being a drain on the taxpayers of Stoke on Trent and that it wasn't the community stadium it was intended to be, despite many concerts, fireworks displays and functions being held there. Of course, since then Port Vale have twice been in administration and bummed out of thousands upon thousands of pounds owed to local businesses... I don't recall the Sentinel stirring that one up as much as the shit they stirred up with us. Maybe I'm just over defensive of Stoke City, actually, I definitely am. But I make no apology for that.

Are you sure you are not confusing the Sentinel's Football Final with the Manchester Football Pink?
As a boy I used to wait at my newsagent's for the Football Final to arrive rather than wait for the paperboy to deliver it and I don't remember it being a pink broadsheet. I am talking about the 1960s.
